Dying Mom Inspires Micheel’s Game, Life

Filed under: PGA , US Open PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Shaun Micheel swallowed hard, rubbed his eyes and, working hard to keep a steady voice, continued with the story. The 41-year old PGA Tour journeyman, whose only career victory came in the 2003 PGA Championship, had just completed a 2-under par 69 Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links to claim a share of the first-round lead in the U.S. Open. He had finished with three birdies over the final five holes, including the 18th. He is tied with England’s Paul Casey and Zimbabwe native Brendon de Jonge. It had been a great a day — if you think golf is really important. “Every time I’m in a tough situation, I think of my mom,” Micheel said. “I love my mother. What do you say? She’s hanging in there.” A year ago Donna Micheel, 63, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Now, the disease has spread to her brain, liver and spine. “It’s hard to watch,” Shaun said.
