School District Agrees To Pay $450K Settlement Over Racial Discrimination Against 3 Former Students Racist school districts should be on high alert — it doesn’t pay to be shady. The families of Jamal Welch, Elijah West and Tyrell Wells are all several hundred thousand dollars richer after University Place School District has opted to settle a lawsuit by young men and their parents that included allegations of racial discrimination. According to the News Tribune reports the school district will pay the families a total of $450,000 to settle a lawsuit the young men and their parents filed in 2015. Legal documents filed by the plaintiffs, who are African-American, claim the three young men faced racial name-calling, discriminatory grading practices and other forms of harassment while they were students at Curtis High School in Washington State. The boys’ parents say when they complained to school officials about how their children were mistreated they were either ignored or rebuffed. Documents filed in the lawsuit describe Curtis High as a toxic environment where the plaintiffs were regularly caled the “n-word” by other students and the boys had to focus on “surviving each and every school day without having a mental or emotional reaction.” According to state education stats, under 10 percent of the more than 1,400 students at Curtis High are black. One incident describes how Wells told a teacher that a racial slur had been written on his desk, “As time went on, he would erase the slur, then someone would re-write it,” documents claim. In a written declaration to the court Welch spoke about the effects of what he experienced at Curtis: “To this day, I have lingering stress and anxiety from my Curtis experience. While before I was easygoing and trusting of people, now I find that I hang back and analyze people before trusting them. I also am more defensive than I used to be, and feel like I need to justify or explain who I am since I learned at Curtis that people have stereotypes and biases against me.” The legal documents also describe how West’s mom tried to help her son, who was being marked down for missing assignments that he’d turned in, by electronically scanning his assignments and emailing them to the teacher before they were due, only to have the assignments still be marked as missing, according to court documents. Another disturbing incident described in the legal documents recounts how a teacher, Karen Macy, wrote her address on the board during a lesson on giving directions in sign language. When students teased her, joking that they might egg her house if they knew her home address, she responded with words to the effect that “no one would do that, except for (Wells,) because he’s black,” according to court documents. Macy resigned from her position in 2014. While the settlement speaks volumes to US, the school district will walk away from the lawsuit without admitting any wrongdoing because the legal agreement states that it’s a settlement of disputed claims, not an admission of liability by the school district. The settlement agreement also bars either side from commenting about the case to the media. Welch, Wells and West are all over 18 now and have left the school district. Nicole Curtis has come under fire. And not just for the dumb name of her HGTV series this time. Instead, the city of Minneapolis has sued Curtis’ company (Detroit Renovations), claiming the Rehab Addict host failed to renovate a dilapidated home her firm bought from the city in 2013 … … for just $2. According to legal documented obtained by Consumerist, the HGTV star and her company failed to adhere to the terms of a contract they entered into with Minneapolis. This contract called for Curtis to fix-up a property in North Minneapolis, while also completing a list of basic improvements within 365 days. The lawsuit was filed in January, but only just made public this week. It states that Detroit Renovations “failed to substantially complete the Minimum Improvements on the Property.” It also claims the company hasn’t paid property taxes or maintained insurance on the residence. The city claims a breach of contract has been made and asks the court to take the property away from Curtis. On Rehab Addict, Curtis and her team renovate historic houses around Michigan and Minnesota. It debuted on HGTV in October of 2010. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Curtis’ attorneys responded in court filings that the small screen personality admits the residence in question has not been renovated. However, that the company “was prevented and/or delayed from completing performance (of the contract’s terms) due to the acts of Plaintiff and the acts of third parties.” As for how city officials even learned about the state of the property? The Tribute states they received numerous complaints from neighbors about unsafe conditions. Curtis isn’t keeping quiet about this controversy. She responded to the lawsuit on social media, saying on Instagram that she’s told her employees to “to ignore the negativity.” She added: “The only way I’ve gotten this far is by staying on my path and remembering that those that have the time to disband such hate on others …well, let’s just say happy, successful people don’t do that.” Curtis went on to slam her critics as “energy suckers,” while referring to herself as an “energy giver.” Among other reactions she’s shared on social media… Curtis is a mother of two. She embroiled in a child custody battle with the father of her 20-month-old son, Harper. And she’s only the latest HGTV personality to get caught up in a headline-making scandal. Rainn Wilson has dropped Vine star Curtis Lepore from his new show “Hollywood and Vine” following backlash surrounding Lepore’s rape trial that concluded earlier this year.
A relationship that started on Vine has ended in a major scandal. Word has come out that Curtis Lepore was arrested in October on charges that he raped Jessi Smiles, a woman he met via the video service Vine. Curtis Lepore and Jessi Smiles Vine Video Lepore was released on $100,000 bail at the time and appeared in court yesterday to answer the charge. According to TMZ insiders, Jessi and Curtis – whose relationship was a big deal in the Vine world and who met in person last summer after getting to know each other online – were in Los Angels last August when something went wrong and they split up. But Jessi then got a concussion a short while later and Curtis offered to help her recover. The victim alleges that Jessi fell asleep in Curtis’ presence and that’s when the sexual assault took place. “Be careful of who you trust. Always be cautious for your safety. Be strong and don’t let your guard down…” Jessi Tweeted the day after the reported rape. In a brief statement to TMZ, Lepore attorney says: “Things are not always as they appear and there are two sides to every story.” We’ll update this article as news breaks.
