Miss Community’s Rich History: Students Strike At Black VA School

Source: Bettmann / Getty Barbara Johns, a sixteen year old student, staged a strike at Robert Russa Moton High School because of its deplorable conditions. One student John Stokes assisted Johns in the effort in 1951. He shares his story with me. John Stokes grew up in the Jim Crow South.  He attended Robert Russa Moton High School in Prince Edward County, Virginia.  This was the only school for African American students in the entire county.  It was a one-story school that was built to hold 180 students.  However, by 1950 there were more than 450 students attending the school.  The educational resources at Moton were few with only eight classrooms, an office, and an auditorium. Board of Education.  On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that public school segregation was unconstitutional. Only a year after graduating from Virginia State University, Stokes went on to become Superintendent of Baltimore City Public Schools before retiring as principal in 1994. First Lady Collis said during our interview that she was taking a stroll around Capitol Grounds with her daughter one beautiful day,  Collis said her youngest daughter Eliza once inquired about the statues honoring white males during a walk around the square and wondered why none honored civil rights figures. “And know-it-all mom that I am or not, I realized I really couldn’t explain why to my child,” and so I worked to rectify that” said Collis. Put On Blast: Rev. William Barber Masterfully Marinates Unseasoned Governor Bill Lee For Invoking MLK Jr. [Video]

Source: Earl Gibson III / Getty Rev. William Barber Puts Gov. Bill Lee On The Spot Over MLK Jr. Quote Each year on MLK day dusty buckets of expired imitation crab meat open their lie holes to spew quotes by Martin Luther King Jr. as if they actually know anything about the man outside of “non-violent”. This year, one such pachydermal politician, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, got chin checked from the pulpit for quoting Dr. King while voting issues that are completely counter to what the civil rights leader believed in. The good folks who work for MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes put together this lil’ montage of the epic dragging. The ancestors would be proud. At :49 the good Reverend starts to shake his head because he knows where this is going and he knows what he’ll have to do in response. Glory be to God. That was beautiful.

Hide Ya Kids: Schools See Sharp Rise In Racial Harassment Reports According To Education Department

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images U.S. Department Of Education Received Substantial Uptick In Racial Harassment Claims Here’s a shocker. The U.S. Department of Education’s civil rights division received significantly more complaints regarding racial harassment in schools in 2017, according to data the department provided for a Huffington Post report. According to the report, the increase is the largest jump in its category since 2009, with the division never receiving more than 600 complaints until the 2017 fiscal year, when the number climbed to 675, which represents a nearly 25% increase from the previous year. Prior to that year the number had ranged between 362 and 577 reports. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is charged with addressing complaints under Title VI, the federal law that protects students from discrimination based on race, color and national origin. Catherine Lhamon, who ran OCR during the Obama administration, said she could not speculate on the reasons for this increase, but pointed to outside data showing a surge in hate crimes nationally. “Our schools are places that encapsulate and reflect the national climate as well,” said Lhamon, who is now chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. “It is distressingly unsurprising that there might be an uptick in racial harassment complaints coming to OCR.” Zoe Savitsky, deputy legal director at the Southern Poverty Law Center, pointed to the numbers as evidence that the Trump administration is creating a toxic national environment that is in turn affecting schools. In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, the Southern Poverty Law Center started surveying teachers about how the election had influenced their school’s climate. Many teachers reported seeing an increase in hateful language and attitudes toward marginalized student groups. “I am saddened but not surprised,” said Savitsky of the rise in racial harassment complaints in schools. Damned shame. All that progress made just to have Trump’s ‘Murica drag us back to the dark ages. For the parents in the comments section, have your kids had more complaints and issues since Trump’s election? Continue reading
