Source: Emma McIntyre / Getty While there was MUCH to discuss about the tribute to Motown at the 61st Grammy Awards, one tribute that felt brief but powerful was the one for the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin who passed away last year at 76. Yolanda Adams , Fantasia and Andra Day stood side by side as they belted out Aretha’s signature 1967 hit “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”. Each woman took a particular verse before coming together to a fiery, impactful finale. Adams previously paid tribute to Franklin with a performance of “Mary Don’t You Weep” at her funeral last August. You can watch the performance of “A Natural Woman” below. Amongst the items included are her 1956 vinyl recording of the song “Never Grow Old” and the red outfit she wore during her public viewing. The items will be rotated throughout the course of the exhibition. The exhibition was supported by Franklin’s estate. “The Aretha mojo lives,” museum board member Kelly Major Green told the Detroit Free Press . “It’s a beautiful tribute. We want to learn and see some things that are more intimate and touching about her. This personalizes her in a little different way.” The exhibit will be on display through January 21, 2019. The singer’s estate is reportedly working on creating a more permanent exhibit that is slated to open in 2020. There isn’t any word on where that project will be housed. Aretha Franklin, one of the most successful and influential solo artists in music history, died on Thursday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 76 years old. A number of reporters and outlets had warned the public ahead of time that Franklin’s time was sadly near , as multiple sources confirmed over the weekend that the legendary artist was gravely ill. She ended up passing away while under hospice care in her Detroit home. She was surrounded by friends and family members at the time. In an unusual move, a tribute concert produced by Live Nation and spearheaded by Sony Music Chief Creative Officer Clive Davis, who signed Franklin to Arista Records in 1980, was actually announced prior to her passing. The event will likely be titled “Clive Davis Presents: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin” and is scheduled to be at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 14. The legendary singer had not performed for an audience since November of 2017. “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family,” Franklin’s family said on Thursday. Sources had said that Franklin’s weight plummeted down to 85 pounds by the time she passed away. Ahead of scheduled concerts in March and April of this year, the singer was forced to cancel the performances under doctor’s orders. Dubbed The Queen of Soul decades ago, Franklin has been cited by contemporary superstars such as Beyonce and Mariah Carey as being a major influence and role model. ( UPDATE : The singer’s publicist confirmed this news to the Associated Press and said Franklin died of advanced pancreatic cancer.) Her rundown of achievements is almost too long to list in one place. But we’ll give it a shot… – Franklin was nominated for 44 Grammy Wwards. – She won 18 Grammy Awards over the course of her career. – This figure represents the third-most Grammys ever won by an individual. – From 1968 through 1975, she won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance every single year. – Along with her most well-known song, “Respect,” the singer shot to fame with hits including “Natural Woman,” “I Say A Little Prayer” and “Chain of Fools,” many of which remain relevant today. – Franklin was the first woman to be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. – She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2005. – In 2010, she was named in the greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone. Yes, of ALL TIME. Says it all, doesn’t it? Before Franklin even passed away, as soon as news broke that she was seriously ill, tributes and notes of sorrow started pouring forward on social media. Missy Elliott summed it up well on Twitter when she wrote the following on Monday morning: My prayers are with Aretha Franklin & her family during this difficult time. We MUST CELEBRATE the Living Legends while they are here to see it. So many have given us decades of Timeless music. In 2017, after 56 years as a singer and songwriter, Franklin said she was retiring, saying at the time: “I feel very, very enriched and satisfied with respect to where my career came from, and where it is now. “I’ll be pretty much satisfied, but I’m not going to go anywhere and just sit down and do nothing. That wouldn’t be good either.” Expect the messages of sorrow and sympathy to continue for many hours, days and weeks. What a career and what a woman. May Aretha Franklin rest in peace. Couple Allegedly Kills Special Needs Child, Tries To Cover It Up With House Fire A stay-at-home mom and an Iraqi war veteran are in custody today , after police found ample evidence that they my have killed their adopted, special needs teen. On March 1, the couple’s home burned to the ground with the boy still inside. At first investigators believed that the fires were caused by a wood stove, the home’s main heat source. But, after an autopsy was performed, it’s been determined that the 16-year-old was allegedly deceased before the blaze, according to the sheriff’s department. Ernest F. Franklin II, 35, and his 33-year-old wife, Heather Franklin were both charged this past Friday with second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and third degree arson. They will be arraigned on their indictments in Chenango County Court at a later date, according to the sheriff’s office. You can’t be serious… DeShawn Franklin And Family Awarded Just $18 In Civil Rights Settlement The case of a innocent black man brutally beaten by police in a case of mistaken identity is making national headlines. Four years ago 18-year-old DeShawn Franklin of Indiana was awoken out of his sleep by police beating and tasering him. Why? Because they mistook him for another black man with dreadlocks. Now in 2016 his family is reeling after being just awarded $18 in a civil rights violation settlement for his unlawful arrest. The IndyStar reports: DeShawn Franklin, a slim, soft-spoken young man, hops on a city bus most days to travel 4 miles to the University of Notre Dame campus, where he works setting up equipment and moving furniture. […] It’s the night four years ago when three police officers entered his family’s home without a warrant. They rousted him from the bed where he slept. They punched him six times: three times in the face and three times to the body. They used a Taser on him. Then they loaded him into a squad car in view of the neighbors. All because of a case of mistaken identity. All because he wore dreadlocks. Even South Bend’s mayor and police department acknowledge that the officers that July night in 2012 used excessive force and violated the civil rights of Franklin and his parents by entering the house without permission. A federal jury in Fort Wayne agreed this month, determining that the officers were liable for unlawful entry and unlawful seizure. But then another maddening thing happened: The jury decided that those violations of the Fourth Amendment were worth only $1. Yes, $1. Each police officer who ignored the U.S. Constitution was ordered to pay a dollar to DeShawn and to each of his parents for each rights violation. The family was awarded an insulting total of $18 in damages. It is their only compensation for a night that left a then-18-year-old high school senior bruised, embarrassed and afraid. And his parents wondering about whether a poor black family can find equity in the American justice system. This…is…ridiculous. Hopefully this case picks up more traction and an attorney can get this young man the real compensation he deserves.
