The book—which is being sold by retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble—was so effective that it was selected to be added to the Library of Congress’ collection of over 39 million books. The story is centered on siblings who are vying to become their school’s next leader and they square off in a debate before their classmates. “I developed the character of Kayla when Nicholas was younger to help teach him expanded vocabulary. After being praised by his first-grade teacher for using the word ‘collaborate’ during his first week of school, I asked Nicholas what he thought about writing a book to help his friends expand their vocabularies,” said Buamah’s mother Danielle in a statement, according to the news outlet. “He thought it was a great idea, as long as one of the main characters could be a male figure, and that’s when he created Kyle.” Buamah wants his book included in school libraries throughout the country. The next installment of his Walking Dictionary series is slated to be released in Summer 2019. He wants to use the series as an avenue to help students develop literacy skills. Buamah has other goals that span outside of the literary world. He hopes to become a mechanical engineer one day. There are many young Black authors on the rise. 8-year old author Jamarion Rainey released a book entitled ADHD and Me: The Key to help other youngsters dealing with ADHD. Legendary Guitarist Jimi Hendrix To Have Post Office Renamed In His Honor

More here:

T he late legendary music artist Jimi Hendrix recently received a major honor from his hometown of Seattle. According to the Seattle Times , legislation was signed to name the Renton Highlands Post Office after Hendrix. Last week a bill was signed into law re-christening the Renton Highlands Post Office the James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix Post Office in the legendary guitarist’s honor. https://t.co/uviFZ5LKyb — The Seattle Times (@seattletimes) December 28, 2018 Under the bill—which was supported by Rep. Adam Smith and other senators—the post office’s new name will be the James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix Post Office, the news outlet writes. Local officials believed that he should be recognized not only for his contributions to music, but the influence and impact that he had on Seattle as well. “I am honored to join in paying tribute to rock and roll icon and Seattle native Jimi Hendrix with the renaming of the Renton Highlands Post Office as the James Marshall ‘Jimi’ Hendrix Post Office Building,” Rep. Smith told the news outlet. “This designation will further celebrate Hendrix’s deep connection to the Puget Sound region and help ensure that his creative legacy will be remembered by our community and inspire future generations.” The city has made an ongoing effort to highlight the guitarist’s legacy. In Seattle, he has a park named in his honor, a bronze statue in the city that depicts him kneeling and playing a guitar, and most recently there was an exhibit dubbed Bold As Love: Jimi Hendrix at Home that opened which delves into his early beginnings and the evolution of his musical journey at the Northwest African American Museum. Jimi Hendrix is one of the most influential guitarists in music history. “Seattle will always be Jimi’s home,” his sister Janie Hendrix once said in an interview, according to Rolling Stone . “This very area is where Jimi grew up, where his dreams were cultivated and his creative energy awakened, in many ways.” SEE ALSO: Rihanna Has A Message For Trump Playing Her Music At His ‘Tragic Rallies’ Prince’s Estate Demands Trump Stop Playing His Music At Rallies [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3842167″ overlay=”true”]

N BA star LeBron James has made major strides both on and off the court in 2018. Not only did we watch James lead his former team the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA finals, but we’ve also witnessed him evolve into a fierce advocate for social justice. His accomplishments this year garnered him The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year Award, ESPN reported. LeBron James named AP male athlete of the year for third time pic.twitter.com/7lEdZKYyW6 — Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) December 27, 2018 This is the third time that James has received the award, the news outlet writes. He was selected by U.S. editors and news directors. Aside from having a strong presence on the court where he averaged just shy of 30 points per game, he continuously used his platform to spread awareness about social issues and bring important conversations surrounding race in America to the forefront. He produced a powerful documentary dubbed Shut Up and Dribble that explored the history of Black athletes who have been outspoken about social and political issues. He created an unscripted series called The Shop that featured candid conversations with celebrities about culturally relevant topics. One of his biggest accomplishments this year was opening up the I Promise School for youth in his hometown of Akron.  He joins a list of influential athletes—including Michael Jordan , Lance Armstrong , and Tiger Woods —who have all received the award at least three times. “In addition to being on everyone’s short list as one of the league’s all-time greatest players, LeBron is among the hardest-working players and is a thoughtful and impactful leader,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver told the news outlet. “He serves on the executive committee of the Players Association even as he builds an impressive media company of his own. And what’s most inspiring, and no surprise given his talent and focus, is how he’s done all of this while embracing his unique opportunity to positively impact communities in need.” James dedicated the award to the I Promise School. “Throughout my journey if I’m able to win anything, my name is getting the award but it’s more than that,” he said in a statement, according to Sports Illustrated . “It’s everybody that I try to inspire. It’s my teammates and it’s my city, where I come from. It’s my kids and my school so it’s never about me.” This accolade comes just weeks after it was announced that James’ Equality Sneakers will be featured in an exhibition at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
