EXCLUSIVE: Loni Love Talks Her Ashley Stewart Collab And How There Are No Plus Size Fashion Icons In The Industry

Source: Ashley Stewart x Loni Love Holiday Collection / Courtesy of Ashley Stewart As the fashion, beauty, and media industry is forced to diversify their spectrum of inclusion, we still are lacking images and visuals of larger women on our magazines, tv’s, and on advertisements. Loni Love is a pioneer in the industry for plus size women from being a hilarious comedian to having a successful talk show as well as an acting career and an author. One thing about Love is that she has always empowered plus size women, particularly Black plus size women, while on and off the set. While plus size fashion has certainly evolved, with more product offerings, in larger sizes for women, we’re still making strides in the fashion department. For years, plus size fashion was equated with mumus and frumpy clothing to cover larger bodies like bags rather than tailored with style. Since the 1920’s the plus size customer has often shopped in specialty stores since department stores either excluded or only offered limited options like dresses and coats. However, in the age of the internet, consumers are demanding more and looking to their favorite celebs and influencers for guidance beyond the rack. Source: Ashley Stewart x Loni Love Holiday Collection / Courtesy of Ashley Stewart Loni Love has been working for the past couple of years as the host of the annual Finding Ashley Stewart Awards Show held in Kings Theater. However, she aligned even more with the brand this year with a holiday collection that has something for every type of woman, “Ashley Stewart’s commitment to inspiring all women and especially African American women a company that invests in my sisters is a brand I want to partner with.” Ashley Stewart’s Finding Ashley Stewart contest goes around the United States visiting their stores, looking for their next “Ashley” or brand ambassador for the year. This has allowed the company to connect with their customers, consumers, an employees on an intimate and in person level. In addition, they provide scholarships and give out awards at the show, uplifting their communities. Love shared, “As an HBCU grad the work they do to provide scholarships to young women is so very needed and close to my heart.” You can see her excitement and energy on stage when she’s hosting the awards show. This is her first fashion collaboration with a brand. The company itself is equally enamored with the star of their latest partnership. James Rhee, CEO of Ashley Stewart tells Hello Beautiful , “Loni Love has been a great friend and ally in our mission for years. Partnering with her on this holiday collection and her first ever fashion curated partnership was a natural progression of our friendship and we couldn’t be happier to share her collection with the Ashley family.” The collection includes a floral organza set, a blush suede suit, sweater dresses in bold colors, joggers dressed up with sequins and more. Source: Ashley Stewart x Loni Love Holiday Collection / Courtesy of Ashley Stewart Love shared, “I love the black sequined dress ($38.70, ashleystewart.com ). It’s comfortable, sexy and festive, just right for a New Year’s Eve party.” At the E! People’s Choice Awards , Love donned a rose gold sequin dress and while it’s not the same as she donned on the red carpet, plus size women can still get in on the trend. In fact, Love tributes Ashley Stewart for facilitating red carpet appearances for plus size women, “It’s no longer hard to find items for the red carpet. We now have new materials and patterns designed for us ‘full figured’ women!” Indeed, plus size celebrities seem to get the short end of the stick when it comes to designing. In fact, one can’t forget in 2017 when Leslie Jones lamented on Twitter of having no high end designers wanting to dress her tall, size 14 frame before Christian Siriano came to her rescue. When we think of a style icon, Rihanna or Michelle Obama may come to mind; however, who in the fuller figured frame holds this title? “There are no real plus size icons for me,” Love states. Undoubtedly, it’s hard to play more creatively with clothing when it’s not offered in your size, the lack of options can be contributing to this; however, designers and brands are starting to expand sizing slowly and some designers even look to speciality store for solid partnerships to begin understanding the customer. The collection is available in sizes 10-30 with prices up to $69.50. Hurry and shop now as there is a 40% off new arrivals sale.  Keep on clicking to check out our favorite pieces and looks in the collection.

A post shared by British Vogue (@britishvogue) on Nov 7, 2019 at 8:56am PST   The “Cuz I Love You” singer opened up in the interview, speaking candidly about a range of topics including how anxiety fuels her as a performer. “When I get really, really anxious before a show, I just go harder and harder and harder when I’m performing and I just go crazy,” she says. “I don’t know why, but my anxiety sometimes fuels who I am as a performer and who I am as an artist – and I know that is not the case for everyone. I don’t know if my body just, like, out of a desperate need to find a place for my anxiety or find a use for it, takes it and puts it there,” the Houston-raised rapper admitted.   View this post on Instagram “I want you to know that if you can love me, you can love your goddamn self.” Born in Detroit to a religious family and raised in Texas, Melissa Jefferson, a.k.a. A post shared by British Vogue (@britishvogue) on Nov 7, 2019 at 9:16am PST   On the lack of plus-sized representation in pop culture growing up: “I would watch things on television and I would look at magazines and I would not see myself. When you don’t see yourself, you start to think something’s wrong with you. Then you want to look like those things and when you realize it’s a physical impossibility, you start to think, ‘What the f**k is wrong with me?’ I think that took a greater toll on me, psychologically, growing up than what anyone could have said to me.”   View this post on Instagram “I’m not trying to sell you me, I’m trying to sell you, you.” In today’s image-obsessed age, @LizzoBeeating is a megawatt beacon of self-assurance – so utterly herself that it is impossible for it not to rub off on you. A post shared by British Vogue (@britishvogue) on Nov 7, 2019 at 10:02am PST   On people ( perhaps Azaelia Banks ) who believe Lizzo is using body positivity to gain popularity, Lizzo had this to say: “Anybody that uses body positivity to sell something is using it for their personal gain. That’s just it. We weren’t selling anything in the beginning. We were just selling ourselves and selling ourselves on the idea – selling ourselves on ourselves, you know? I’m not trying to sell you me. I’m trying to sell you, you.” LOVE IT! You better tell ’em! In an accompanying video, Lizzo keeps it 100 about her “first acts,” which she shared that she was hungover shooting her Vogue cover, that her first memories of music were gospel music and the first album she ever bought was Destiny Child’s “Survivor.” Take a look: Congrats Lizzo! Skechers Trolls Nike After Infringement Lawsuit Filing

Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty The two most unlikely footwear companies to be beefing are now in a heated legal war. Nike is alleging Skechers is copying their popular releases. As spotted on  High Snobiety the California based brand is being accused of lifting Nike’s designs from the Nike Air VaporMax and the Nike Air Max 270. So much so that the sportswear giant filed an infringement lawsuit earlier this month alleging “Skechers’ business strategy includes copying its competitors’ designs to gain market share.” Last week Skechers took out an advertisement in the  Los Angeles Times addressing the claims stating the claims are baseless. “As you may have heard, Nike filed a lawsuit against Skechers in Los Angeles alleging that those shoes infringe certain Nike patents. Please note that the lawsuit has been filed just recently and merely contains Nike’s unproven allegations. Skechers plans on defending the lawsuit vigorously and in response will deny that any of the listed styles infringe any of Nike’ patent. pic.twitter.com/RiA08BaboQ — SKECHERS USA (@SKECHERSUSA) October 14, 2019 This is not the first time Nike accused Skechers of style thievery. In 2016 they asked a judge to remove several Skechers releases from retail stores that they felt copied their patents. In what has to be considered elite corporate trolling, Skechers dropped on an advertising poking fun at Zion Williamson’s sneakers falling apart while on the court back in February. Grey’s Anatomy Recap: It’s a Charmed Reunion!

Grey’s Anatomy staged a Charmed reunion Thursday night, bringing Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano back together to share the screen.  The pair played sisters Haylee and Heidi of a young woman named Heather, who was left brain-dead following a harrowing fall at a construction site.  While initially in denial about the diagnosis, Richard carried out one last test to give the ladies the closest thing to peace of mind he could.  But in true Grey’s Anatomy fashion, there was some drama thrown in for good measure. Haylee brought crystals along with her because she was under the assumption that she could heal her sister.  Heidi figured it was best to say her goodbyes, and be done with it, but the two sisters couldn’t help arguing because of their distinctly different views on the matter.  Richard had enough and yelled at the two of them to make the decision together, or they would remember this moment for the rest of their lives.  When they agreed that their sister was gone, and Richard switched off her life support machine, Heather’s phone rang.  In a true twist of fate, it turned out that the woman they pulled the plug on was not Heather. Heather’s phone was stolen, leading everyone to believe the brain-dead woman was her.  Yes, really.  Richard had a truly horrible a day as a result and tried to get back in contact with Catherine to check in on her.  But she didn’t answer. That pushed Richard to hang out with Gemma, aka the woman he helped save last season.  They went to dinner! Over at Grey Sloan, Maggie was still cut up about the way Jackson treated her. ICYMI: He went missing and returned with a new girlfriend.  Maggie was struggling to move on, but a new patient named Bertie was determined to help her see the light that everything happens for a reason.  Things got worse when Jackson’s new bae showed up at the hospital for treatment, and Jackson wasted no time in showing off his surgical skills.  This was all too much for Maggie, primarily because of how quickly this new relationship was moving.  Vic tries to speak to Maggie, but it resulted in the most awkward scene to date. Elsewhere, Jo started her first week as a resident, and Dahlia made her feelings clear that she was not happy about performing an ALPPS surgery with anyone other than Meredith Grey.  Heck, Jo felt scared and managed to get Bailey to agree to let Mer be her eyes in the sky, thanks to video chat.  The surgery was a success, all thanks to Jo, but Dahlia was furious that many of the interns came to the hospital because of Meredith, and now they were treating her like a distant memory.  Bailey fired Dahlia on the spot, saying, “Now you and your hero have something in common,” she said. Okay then.  Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays on ABC.  Watch Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 Episode 3 Online

Lupita Nyong’o Is Right, Colorism Is The Daughter Of Racism

Read the original:

Source: Dia Dipasupil / Getty While promoting her anticipated children’s book, Sulwe , Oscar winner lupita nyong’o dropped some serious nuggets about colorism . When talking to BBC Newsnight on Monday (October 7) about the concept of her book, which centers on a Black girl who has darker skin than her family, Lupita shared her own personal experiences. “I definitely grew up feeling uncomfortable with my skin color because I felt like the world around me awarded lighter skin,” the Black Panther and Little Monsters star told host Emily Maitlis. Adding that said her lighter-skinned younger sister was called “beautiful” and “pretty,’ adding “Self-consciously that translates into: ‘I’m not worthy.’” Most importantly, she stressed that colorism “is the daughter of racism” in “a world that rewards lighter skin over darker skin.” Take a look: While colorism is an extension of racism and white standards of beauty that have been force-fed to us (hence, her being told that she was “too dark” during an audition), Lupita is stating nothing but facts when she says that Black folks have also internalized this hate. “We still ascribe to these notions of Eurocentric standards of beauty, that then affect how we see ourselves among ourselves,” she said. She’s absolutely right because the lens we view ourselves through doesn’t always reflect the reality of our infinite beauty. It’s society’s own initial reception of Lupita’s beauty that truly woke me up to how dangerous and irrational colorism is in our community. Back in 2012, when Lupita first came on the scene playing Patsy in 12 Years A Slave and how instantly inamoured Hollywood became with her—as was I. Whether it was her slaying the red carpet or being named People’s Most Beautiful Person, people couldn’t get enough of this new It-Girl. And yet, while this was happening in the “mainstream” world, it felt as is some Black folks had a different take on her fame. On the blogs, Twitter and Facebook, even the “wokest” folks expressed this fake concern about Lupita being overexposed and worry that she was being eroticized and fetishized by white folks. Even worse, there was this widespread belief that white folks were only praising her beauty (and dark skin) to somehow make fun of Black folks. Quite honestly, it’s pretty damn pathological. When white people praise light-skinned Black women like Beyonce or Tessa Thompson or the countless other beige-looking starlets, we wouldn’t bat an eye or question their motives because light-skinned and racial ambiguity is the standard of beauty. It’s what has been forced down our throats and we accept it. But when that same shine was focused on Lupita, it invoked something in us. It was an internalized disbelief that white folks could never find Lupita beautiful because we didn’t (well y’all, ’cause she’s the baddest woman on the planet to me). It was if her mocha skin and short tight 4c afro should never rock the cover of Vogue because we actually believed it wasn’t worthy because that’s what white folks had been telling us…and believed it. Somehow we were flipping this to say and do everything except admit we were the ones having a problem. Self-hate is a helluva drug. Granted, it’s been years since that all went down and things are slowly getting better, but colorism and disdain for darker-skinned Black women is still as persistent and pervasive as ever. Just look on Twitter, the ‘Gram or any other pocket of Black culture, there are examples of how our darker-skinned sistas are mistreated, ignored and verbally berated for the melanin. Even our favorite Black Hollywood gatekeepers continue to push this narrative by casting mostly lighter-skinned starlets in roles (especially as love interests), pushing out the chocolate sistas who are equally if not more talented. So say what you want, but all of this is happening on our watch by our own hands. While colorism may be the daughter of racism, it’s also the sister of internalized racism.  The real question is what are we as Black people going to do to stop it?
