Councilwoman seeks name change https://t.co/hT7CPuMxMJ — USA TODAY Travel (@usatodaytravel) December 17, 2018 In November, Hurt submitted a proposal to the airport’s chairman Dexter Samuels and received some pushback, the news outlet writes. Samuels claimed that naming the airport after Winfrey would not align with their naming policy. Despite the obstacles, Councilwoman Hurt is continuing to push for the name change and will do whatever it takes to bring her vision to fruition. “It’s Oprah. Nashville is in a very unique position to be able to offer that type of recognition to someone that’s very deserving,” said Hurt in a statement, according to the news outlet. “I think it’s a grand opportunity for us to recognize someone of Oprah’s stature.” Hurt also added that the city of Nashville needs to do a better job of acknowledging the contributions of notable Black figures. She was at the forefront of getting the Metro Council to rename a part of Charlotte Avenue after Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oprah Winfrey has deep ties to Nashville. She graduated from East High School and then went on to earn her degree from Tennessee State University. She also launched her career in television in Nashville. Father Of Foul: All The Times Future Was Petty AF

The rest is here:

Source: splash news / Splash News Future went from melodic trap king to the petty godfather in just a matter of years. Not sure if it’s the Scorpio in him, or if the support of the Future-hive has made him feel invincible, but the Beast Mode rapper throws more shade than an Atlanta Housewife. Even his quotes have an underlying tone of potential pettiness and slight shade. He once stated, “I know I haven’t always done things the right way. I’m just trying to reflect on how to make myself better, how to become a better man, a better father, a better person, a better artist.” Just last week, Nayvadius got into with another professional shade thrower, Wendy Williams , after she ranted on her show about his many baby mamas and how the rapper needs to wear condoms. Apparently, Future caught wind of Wendy’s shade and took to Instagram to respond, writing “Thank God I’m richer than Wendy Williams.” We don’t even know what that means, we just know that it’s coming from the ultimate shady place.   Future turns 35 years today and what better way to honor the spicy Scorpio than to acknowledge his contributions to the culture. Although he’s done a lot musically when it comes to hip hop and pushing the culture forward, he’s left a larger imprint by how he moves in his personal life: very low key, yet very lethal. In honor of Nayvadius’ day, let’s take a look back at some of the petty godfather’s pettiest moments.

Black Poetry Day: 5 Dope Poets You Should Follow On Instagram — ASAP

Source: Marla Aufmuth / Getty It’s Black Poetry Day, and today we honor those ingenious men and women who have been brave enough to bare their souls through literature and share it with the world. Why commemorate on October 17th ? According to sources, Jupiter Hammon, the first published black poet in the United States, was born in Long Island, New York, on October 17, 1711. In honor of Hammon’s birth, we celebrate the contributions of all African Americans to the world of poetry. Although he was a slave, Hammon was purportedly allowed access to the manor library and was educated with the estate owner’s children, even working with Henry Lloyd in his business ventures. But he was far from being the only former slave to have a notable writing career. Phyllis Wheatley was also an African slave — however, as her works spread throughout town, she became the abolitionists’ illustrative testimony that blacks could be both artistic and intellectual. Her name was a household word among literate colonists and her achievements a catalyst for the fledgling antislavery movement.     Poetry has certainly transformed over the years, especially with the rise of social media and the impact Hip Hop now has on the mainstream. Most people don’t realize that Hip Hop is a form of poetry with a sick beat behind it.  Just ask rap’s go-to poet, Wale . The DC native once said of poetry: “The ability to make somebody feel something: that’s art. However you look at it, whether you’re an author, a painter, a singer, a rapper, a spoken-word artist – art. I feel like I’m one of the more creative artists in the game. I think I’m going to be here for a while.” In honor of Black Poetry Day, we’ve highlighted some of our favorite young stars who’ve changed the poetry game for us millennials. Everyone love a generic quote, but these writers always push their pens to give us more — and keep us wanted more. Hit the flip for 5 young, Black poets we all should be following on Instagram.

Detroit Museum Honors Aretha Franklin’s Legacy With New Exhibit

N early a month after legendary songstress Aretha Franklin was laid to rest, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is paying homage to the Queen of Soul in a special way. The Detroit-based institution recently opened a new exhibit that captures Franklin’s life journey and highlights her contributions to music, Rolling Stone reported. An Aretha Franklin exhibit, “Think: A Tribute to the Queen of Soul,” will open this week at a Detroit museum https://t.co/o6rt2AumEQ — Rolling Stone (@RollingStone) September 23, 2018 The exhibit—dubbed “Think: A Tribute to the Queen of Soul”—opened on Tuesday, the news outlet writes. It features Franklin’s personal items; including ensembles from her wardrobe and copies of some of her first recordings. The exhibit also includes video footage and photos that capture pivotal moments in the singer’s career. Each item featured in the exhibit illustrates Franklin’s impact and influence in the realm of music and how she used her artistry to evoke social and political change. Amongst the items included are her 1956 vinyl recording of the song “Never Grow Old” and the red outfit she wore during her public viewing. The items will be rotated throughout the course of the exhibition. The exhibition was supported by Franklin’s estate. “The Aretha mojo lives,” museum board member Kelly Major Green told the Detroit Free Press . “It’s a beautiful tribute. We want to learn and see some things that are more intimate and touching about her. This personalizes her in a little different way.” The exhibit will be on display through January 21, 2019. The singer’s estate is reportedly working on creating a more permanent exhibit that is slated to open in 2020. There isn’t any word on where that project will be housed. Aretha Franklin passed away on August 16 after battling with pancreatic cancer. She was 76. Legacy: Kelis’ “Milkshake” Lives On In These Sexy Dance Clips

Read more:

Source: Photo by L. Cohen/WireImage / Getty On August 27, 2003, history was made when Kelis released a national anthem for anyone with goods to show off. “Milkshake” hit the airwaves as the lead single from Kelis’ third studio album Tasty  and it soon took off for its suggestive lyrics and catchy hook. The music video also lived up to the hype with Kelis showing her sexy side along with some very pro-dairy waiters.   When Kelis was asked what the song means by The Guardian back in 2004, she replied, “It means whatever people want it to; it was just a word we came up with on a whim, but then the song took on a life of its own.” Kelis definitely wasn’t over-exaggerating. With the help of the music video, “Milkshake” peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, according to Billboard , and it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2004. Even the people of Ireland were “warming it up” when the song shot to number one on the country’s chart. Now with #NationalChocolateMilkDay making waves on Twitter, I thought it would be a good time to celebrate all the delicious moves “Milkshake” helped inspire.   Before “twerking” became a household word or “cakes” were getting “smashed to smithereens,” there were milkshakes bringing plenty of people to the yard and till this day, the legacy lives on. Choreographer Kaelynn “KK” Harris made sure all her team’s goods were on deck when they threw down to various remixes of “Milkshake” in a sexy video…   Even fitness channels, like Hip Shake Fitness, were bringing the taste of Kelis to their routines…for better or for worse.   And if you’re wondering if the song works well for the pole, dancer  Meggan Marie and her ladies seem to make it work…   The international community also continues to show the song love with places like the Nataraja Academy in South Korea putting their own spin to the seductive song. Peep  Gangdrea ‘s choreography in the clip below….   When Kelis was asked about the song 14 years later by delish  in 2017, she replied that she’s into different things now. “People really think I’m at home making milkshakes all day,” she said. “Let’s be real — that doesn’t happen.” She continued, “I’ve got kids. I’m making smoothies for them and trying to sneak in healthy things that they’ll eat.” Despite the change of priorities for the mother, the song will continue to live on for every dairy lover and milkshaker of the future. Thank you Kelis. Your contributions won’t be forgotten.

Safaree Shows Off Royalty Check From Nicki Minaj Album

Source: Paras Griffin/VMN18 / Getty Safaree is still letting it be known that he helped Nicki Minaj become a rap star. Exactly how much will never be known, but he did show off a royalty check for his contributions to the  Pink Friday  album.  Scaf Beezy posted a copy of the check on his Instagram Stories on his birthday. The check is for a healthy $2,342.33 and lists the songs “Roman’s Revenge” and “Did It On’Em.” It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise since he’s credited as a “featured artist” on both songs and as a “lyricist” on the latter. That’s a nice birthday gift indeed.
