College Instructor Faces Death Threats For ‘Anti-White’ Teachings

Excerpt from:

Source: Thatree Thitivongvaroon / Getty A debate director for Weber State University faces death threats and risks losing his job due to the accusations of one of his students. According to the Standard Examiner, the university has launched an investigation surrounding Ryan Wash , the Black debate director, and Michael Moreno , a White student, who accuses him of teaching an anti-white curriculum. Moreno rails against Wash on his viral YouTube channel , claiming that Wash doesn’t allow students to develop their own argument, but instead forces them to adhere to arguments that he selects or approves. These are usually arguments Moreno says are discriminatory toward white people. His YouTube channel includes videos labeling the professor as “anti-white” and “racist.” Moreno argues that Wash is unfit to teach debate or any other subject and he’s calling for his termination. “I don’t think that students should be forced with that dilemma of ‘regurgitate radical leftist ideology or don’t get to do debate.’ That’s not fair,” Moreno said. “All students should be able to do debate.” Despite Moreno’s claims, a few members of the debate team say that certain recordings of Wash are taken out of context. They argue that the videos show Wash preparing the team for competition by asserting potential arguments that they could use or arguments that they can face. Wash also has the same sentiment. “The larger message and what’s being talked about, especially in that first video, is (that) I was trying to teach them about perspectivism,” Wash said. ”… People’s vantage points, their experiences, their cultures, their social location, guide how they navigate the world, what they understand to be true, what they don’t understand to be true, and those are the things that we… have to navigate in debate.” Moreno’s YouTube videos contain his own commentary along with edited video and audio clips of Wash, Moreno, and other students at debate practices. Moreno also featured a link to the full audio used to make the video, however, the link to that audio stopped working on Tuesday afternoon. The recordings feature quotes from Wash that have caused controversy on social media, including one that opens the first video: “ Our argument will be that space is not real — it’s not real. Science, technology — it’s all fake. It’s a projection of white fantasies that has worked to control our interpretation of how the world works.” The clips were made at a debate retreat prior to the start of the semester and at practices early in the semester. Moreno, a first-year student who was still fresh on the team, stopped participating in practices one to two weeks into the fall semester, according to him, although Wash and other team members have slightly different accounts. Moreno’s peers and Wash say that they had no knowledge that they were being recorded. The fact that Moreno uploaded the recordings to the Internet also made them accessible to other debate teams. The uploaded clips are against Weber State policy, which requires students to “ obtain the faculty member’s permission before recording lectures” and prohibits students from creating “an audio or video record of any person while on university premises without his/her prior knowledge,” though it’s not against the law in Utah.  Because of the videos, Wash says that his personal contact info has been shared online, a tactic known as doxxing, and he says that he’s received more than 100 messages containing racial slurs and even death threats. On Tuesday, November 5, Wash received his first threatening call to his cellphone. “It’s become a really unsafe situation to where we’ve had to take precautions not only to protect me, but protect the students,” Wash said. He explained some threats even mentioned the Ku Klux Klan, saying that the racist group will take “ appropriate action,” although the people sending the messages do not explicitly say that they’re members of the group. The Weber County Attorney’s Office is aware of the alleged threats and is cooperating with the Weber State Police Department to investigate, according to deputy Weber County attorney Branden Miles. Debate team members have also been offered police escorts to their classes. Meanwhile, Moreno says he hasn’t received any threats because of his videos. One campus group, Never Neutral Union, has formed calling for Moreno’s expulsion. One debate team and NNU member, Rei Olsen, defended Wash, saying, “ It is very common, at least in college debate, that the coaches just say, ‘This is the argument you’re running — as a school, we all run the same argument.’ But Ryan is amazing at letting us all run what we want to run.” Moreno also accuses Wash of requiring arguments to include mention of oppression based on gender, race, class or sexual orientation, even if the debate topic isn’t directly related to these themes. Moreno said this method encourages a victim mentality. However, Wash argues that his approval of an argument is “ whether or not it can stand up to scrutiny.” He said gender, race, class, and sexual orientation are not required features of every topic or argument, but they do come up often in the arguments of opposing teams, so it’s important that the Weber State team be ready to address them.  Moreno said that he told Wash that he felt “hated by everyone,” and Wash assured him that he wasn’t. Moreno still argued that Wash was “ vulgar and rude to me. He does not like me.” The university is continuing their investigation into both sides, according to executive director of marketing and communications J ohn Kowalewski. President Brad Mortensen also added that “ if disciplinary action is taken, it is the university’s long-standing policy that it does not publicly share or discuss personnel or student conduct violations.” SEE ALSO: High School Coach Whose ‘White Power’ And N-Word Video Went Viral Is Shocked People Are Upset Diamond And Silk Get Dragged For Bizarrely Comparing Biden And Warren To Salt And Sugar

The Gang Is Back With A Slight Twist in ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ Trailer

More here:

Source: picture alliance / Getty J umanji: Welcome To The Jungle was a surprise hit despite initial worries being the film deviated from the original movie. Ditching the original plot that involved a board game, the reboot saw four teenagers transported into video game world swapping their real bodies with video game avatars played by Kevin Hart , Dwayne Johnson Karen Gillan, and Jack Black. So it’s no surprise a sequel was made, and finally, we get our first look at Jumanji: The Next Level which sees the original gang return but with a bit of twist. In the film’s first trailer, — despite putting a baseball bat to the video game console loaded with the Jumanji cartridge — at the end of the first film we see Spencer (Alex Wolff) misses his old buddies, fixes the smashed game system and returns to the world. When his friends show up, they learn Spencer is inside the malfunctioning game in, and it’s up to them to go save him. Once the heroes are inside they quickly learn something is wrong, Bethany is now missing, and Johnson and Hart’s avatars are now being controlled by two old men played by Danny DeVito and Danny Glover and the Fridge being transferred into Jack Black’s Professor Shelly Oberon. Right off the rip, it’s absolutely hilarious seeing Johnson and Hart do their own impersonations of DeVito and Glover. The action from the first film looks to be taken to another level as the gang alongside with the addition of the new characters search for Spencer and try to make it out the game alive. Also returning in Jumanji: The Next Level is Nick Jonas, Madison Iseman, and Morgan Turner, joining DeVito and Glover is Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina who will also be playing a new character in the film. Looks like Sony has another hit on their hands with the sequel that arrives this Christmas. You can watch the first trailer below. Photo: picture alliance / Getty

Put Some Respek on Her Name: Was Maya Angelou’s Response To This Girl Rude?

Read the original:

Source: Karega Kofi Moyo / Getty Friday morning, a video of the late, great, and ever-so-eloquent Dr. Maya Angelou surfaced where she corrects a young woman who her calls her “Maya.” And for some reason, the internet has become divided over it. Please know that Maya Angelou is trending nationally because there are some young folks who are offended that she directed a young woman to call her Ms. Angelou instead of Maya in a 20-year-old clip. We are doomed. pic.twitter.com/XD1odHh0cV — Yashar Ali (@yashar) March 15, 2019 In the clip, the young woman tells the moderator she has a question for “Maya” regarding interracial relationships. Maya says calmly, “Thank you. And first, I’m Ms. Angelou. I’m not Maya.” The girl repeats Angelou, to which Angelou replies “Yes ma’am.” “I’m 62 years old.” She continues.” I’ve lived so long and tried so hard that a young woman like you, or any other, has no license to come up to me and call me by my first name. That’s first. Also, because at the same time, I’m your mother, I’m your auntie, I’m your teacher, I’m your professor. See?” Now, I can’t believe we have to unpack this, but here we are. The young girl in this clip was by no means trying to be disrespectful, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t. In today’s society, we need to own up to hurting, angering, or disrespecting someone else even if it was not the intention. Angelou is accomplished and deserves to be called whatever she pleases. For anyone taken aback by this legendary black woman, elderly black woman, educated black woman asserting her presence and brilliance to the youth and be it anyone else who is watching, you have a clear misunderstanding of where and how respect is derived. Angelou did not disrespect the young girl, humiliate her, or anything seemingly close to that. This moment, like any other moment with Ms. Angelou, is a teaching moment. TBH, the young girl does not appear to be as rattled as the internet, with some users calling Angelou rude. Son Maya Angelou didn’t say anything about respecting your elders, she said “you don’t have the LICENSE to call me that” and that was fucking rude — The Many Faced Gawd (@KarlynMuva) March 15, 2019 Maya Angelou was rude af. There I said it. https://t.co/AIIltIjCiq — Camille (@ceedoesitbest) March 15, 2019 Rude. Tired of old people feeling superior for no reason, she knew it was wrong so she apologized at the end of the show. — moni (@naturefairyknj) March 15, 2019 While others were shocked that some youngsters believed they could call Angelou, let alone any older individual, by their first name. if you think Maya Angelou is in the wrong you can unfollow me now, go to your nearest purveyor of LEGOs, purchase several, return to your domicile, distribute the LEGOs across the floor, remove your shoes and socks, and walk across said LEGOs — wikipedia brown is voting for toni (@eveewing) March 15, 2019 And many wanted to let Angelou’s name rest in power. Maya Angelou is dead she is the literal definition of unbothered can y’all stop trying to drag a new dead person every week when you’re bored — Ira Madison III (@ira) March 15, 2019 I will physically fight anyone trying to drag Maya Angelou. — Preston Mitchum (@PrestonMitchum) March 15, 2019 P.S. She even apologized to the young girl in second clip making its rounds on the net. Later in the video, Maya Angelou apologized to the young girl for being short with her so everyone calling people “sensitive” for noticing the disrespect in her initial response can relax lol pic.twitter.com/fScII5YQvS — kae (@sportyidk) March 15, 2019 Regardless, this bit of backlash highlights a bigger issue and that’s the blatant disregard and disrespect towards one another – especially towards black women! When we assert ourselves we are rude, angry, and every other abrasive word even if the message we convey is with a calm tone. Angelou worked hard for her titles and even without them, she’s our elder so put some respek on her name and let the legend rest. A Lil Positivity: Morehouse Professor Holds Student’s Baby During Class Since He Couldn’t Get A Sitter

Source: Raymond Boyd / Getty Professor Praised For Holding A Student’s Baby While Teaching Class Nathan Alexander, a visiting professor at Morehouse College , said he was just trying to help when he allowed a student to bring his infant daughter to his class on Friday, also volunteering to hold the child as he taught. Pictures of the unconventional classroom dynamic have garnered a lot of positive attention on social media, with a lot of people praising Alexander’s efforts to assist the student, Wayne Hayer, when he came to class while unable to find childcare. “I’m not an exception,” Alexander said in a telephone interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution . “We have teachers who (assist students in similar ways) every day.” Alexander said that he initially discussed the idea of the same student bringing his child to class a few weeks back, when Hayer said he couldn’t stay for office hours because he needed to go pick her up. Much t o the surprise of the professor’s, his student took him up on his offer and Hayer arrived to algebra class with his adorable baby girl dressed in a pink outfit.  In the beginning of the class, Alexander noticed that Hayer was distracted with watching his child, which is when he offered to hold her, saying, “Hey, I’ll take her so you can take some good notes.” Alexander joined the Morehouse faculty in 2017 and said this was not his first experience allowing a student to bring a child to class. He recalled a student once bringing an 8 or 9-year-old to his class in the past. Nathan explained that these allowances are part of the mission of colleges such as Morehouse, the nation’s lone college for African-American men  — men finding ways to help other men. The professor does not have any children himself, but said he believes it’s important to make such accommodations, when necessary, and knows many educators make similar decisions. “Teachers do this in their own way every day,” he said of those in his profession around the country. “This is what they do.” Check out some reactions below from everyone who has been touched by this precious story. SMH: NYC Professor Says CUNY Illegally Seized & Lost Priceless Black History Documents & $12M Research

Source: georgeclerk / Getty He’s In The Middle Of A Complex Lawsuit With The Institution Of Higher Learning A Black political science professor, who was fired by the City University of New York, is currently tied up in a multi-million dollar federal lawsuit over lost Black history research. According to New York Daily News , Professor Joseph Wilson says decades of lectures, writings, correspondence, books and research, including some that can’t be replaced, was illegally seized by CUNY. The professor says years of research was boxed up and carted away by clueless CUNY security guards without warning in a series of warrant-less raids of his school offices. The drastic actions came after the celebrated professor was accused of enriching himself on the school’s dollar. Over the past several years since the the raids happened, Wilson has been fighting to save his Brooklyn College teaching job. He’s also tried with limited success to track down his items. Some were found tossed into random boxes, others were strewn across school shelves and plastic bags, and other items have completely disappeared. Wilson is seeking unspecified punitive and compensatory damages for his lost work in a lawsuit. He also is demanding CUNY dig up his property or pay him for what was lost. “All I want is justice. What gives people the right, for whatever alleged violations they used to fire me, to trash my history and my intellectual property?” Wilson told the Daily News . “The university has to be held accountable and apologize profusely and profoundly. They made some dastardly errors.” CUNY denies all allegations made against them by Wilson. The school said a neutral arbitrator found Wilson was appropriately terminated due to “serious misconduct” that included taking an additional $100,000 in compensation he wasn’t entitled to over the course of three years. He also allegedly submitted false documents to college officials. “We look forward to a full airing of all of the facts in this case, which clearly show that Mr. Wilson’s claims are without merit,” a spokesman said. “The lawsuit is built on false allegations.” Despite the allegations made by CUNY, Wilson definitely has a strong rep in the academic world. The 67-year-old was a leading expert on the history of Black working class and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first Black union. He’s also enjoyed a long tenured career as a political science professor at Brooklyn College, and he founded the Brooklyn College Center for Diversity and MultiCultural Studies, dedicated to increasing diversity among students, teachers and classroom topics. In 1997, he was also appointed director of the Graduate Center for Worker Education in lower Manhattan. Things took a shift for the downside when the “raid” was carried out at the Worker Educations Center in January 2012. “We were told not to move, that we couldn’t make any phone calls, or leave the office or speak to anyone,” said Wilson. Several months later, the suit says another seizure was carried out on the Brooklyn College campus where Wilson had two offices. Everything was taken, including his letters with poet and fellow teacher Allen Ginsberg , his correspondence with music legend Ray Charles , a transcript and notes on a previously undiscovered speech by Martin Luther King Jr. , and thousands more pages and items. Even his research into a death threat made against Civil Rights and labor organizer A. Philip Randolph (who was mailed a severed human hand) was taken. In addition to all this, Wilson also can’t find the bulk of his 40-year academic research, which independent scholars value at $12 to $14 million. Wilson filed his federal suit in 2017, but the complex case is still underway nearly two years later. For Wilson, the main goal is to recoup as much as his work as possible. He reflected on the experience saying: “I have to tell you, it was traumatic, shattering and world changing what happened, and I never believed that it could and I certainly didn’t think it would happen at CUNY. I amassed an incredible amount of documentary history on Black workers…a treasure trove on some of the great and the unknown civil rights leaders. How it is possible that all this is going to be erased?”

We Can All Stop With The 10 Year Challenge Now Because Mariah Carey Won

Source: Barcroft Media / Getty Mariah Carey always has a way of making things her own and completely disregarding what everyone else is doing–so it’s no surprise Mimi took that same approach when it came to the 10 year challenge. If you’re not already familiar with the 10 year challenge…consider yourself lucky. But chances are, you’ve seen almost all of your friends on social media posting pictures of themselves from 2009 side-by-side with a picture of them today, in 2019. There’s a lot of questions that stemmed from everyone randomly starting this 10 year challenge. Why not wait until 2020 so this challenge could be a million times more satisfying? Is this all just a ploy from the government (or Facebook) to train facial recognition technology on aging? Where do all of these challenges even come from and why do we do them? The answer to most of those questions is still unknown, but unlike the rest of us, Mariah Carey decided not to conform to this possible government ploy–and she made that fact known in the most Mariah way possible. Earlier this week, Ms. Carey posted a side-by-side photo much like those that the rest of the internet has been posting these past couple of weeks. But in the name of being original, the two photos that she edited–well, let’s be real, Mariah definitely doesn’t edit her own photos–are the exact same picture. I don't get this 10 year challenge, time is not something I acknowledge. *Picture taken at some point prior to today pic.twitter.com/f5XUye3Hot — Mariah Carey (@MariahCarey) January 16, 2019 Mariah Carey is not anything like any of us. She doesn’t understand the 10 year challenge, so she doesn’t stick to the rules. The icon wrote, “I don’t get this 10 year challenge, time is not something I acknowledge *Picture taken at some point prior to today” and now everyone needs to stop posting their 10 year challenges IMMEDIATELY. “Time is not something I acknowledge” just might be the most iconic quote of 2019 and it’s not even February yet. It’s literally the most perfect excuse for anything and everything, and the people of Twitter are already having a field day with it. Take a look at some of the funniest, realest, and most ridiculous reactions to Mariah’s incredible 10 year challenge. “Time is not something I acknowledge” is the only sentence I care about today https://t.co/WvOUyWqkv2 — Hadley Freeman (@HadleyFreeman) January 17, 2019 If your credit card company doesn’t accept Mariah’s quote as an excuse, you need a new credit card. Hampton University Becomes First HBCU To Have Women’s Triathlon Team

H ampton University has hit a major milestone in the realm of sports. The Virginia-based institution has made history by becoming the first historically Black college and university to add a women’s varsity triathlon team to their list of sports programs, HBCU Gameday reported. #Hampton University to be first HBCU to participate in women’s triathlon at varsity level https://t.co/HyuXayaoRD pic.twitter.com/1EJOVO5aST — WGNT CW 27 (@WGNTCW27) October 31, 2018 The program—which is slated to kick off in Fall 2019—will be the institution’s 19th varsity sport, the news outlet writes. The school was able to create the team through the help of a $225,000 grant that was issued by the USA Triathlon Foundation. The funds will go toward hiring a coach to lead the team, player scholarships, travel and other expenses. “Hampton University’s addition of a varsity women’s triathlon program is cause for celebration for many reasons,” Rocky Harris , CEO, USA Triathlon, said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “USA Triathlon is in the process of working with HBCUs on a variety of upcoming initiatives to increase diversity in triathlon at the youth and collegiate level, and this is an important step in that journey. The academic and athletic administration at Hampton have proven to be leaders by committing to this unique opportunity for female student-athletes, who will shape the future of our sport for years to come.” Leaders at Hampton believe that the addition of the team will be instrumental in creating pathways for Black women athletes to pursue careers in sports and will contribute to diversifying a sport where they are underrepresented. “Once again, just like in sailing and lacrosse, we are pioneering something in sports and specifically for women. This is not the first time that Hampton has led, and others will follow,” Hampton University president William R. Harvey told the Washington Post . Diversity in the sport is needed. According to a report released by Triathlon Business International , Black people make up 0.5% of triathlon athletes. SMH: Harvard University Professor Quits Following Sexual Harassment Claims From 18 Women

Harvard University campus in Boston Massachusetts USA Harvard Professor Leaves Amid 18 Sexual Harassment Allegations A  Harvard University Political Science professor by the name of Jorge I. Domínguez has left his job following 18 different women coming forward to claim they had been sexually harassed by him. In a report published by the  Chronicle of Higher Education ,   several colleagues of Domínguez came forward in order to tell stories of unwanted advances and other inappropriate behavior. The alleged incidents date decades back all the way to the ’80s. Terry Karl, a junior professor during her time at Harvard, explained that he would often touch her inappropriately. After filing a complaint against Domínguez, who was slated to be the next department chair, Harvard determined he was responsible for misconduct and as a result, he “was removed from administrative responsibilities for three years and told that any future misconduct could trigger his dismissal.” After Karl left the university, several other women–including both faculty and students–filed sexual harassment complaints against Dominguez to the university, many of which were dismissed or held up indefinitely. Other women who spoke to the  Chronicle  said they stayed silent on their experiences out of fear of retaliation, which included some leaving the university entirely. Karl insists that she did everything she could to sound the alarm while she was at Harvard and emphasizes, “the silence was not mine. It was Harvard’s.” Very soon after the  Chronicle  report was published approximately a week ago, Harvard put Domínguez on administrative leave pending review. But then, in an email to colleagues, the disgraced professor announced that he would be leaving Harvard once and for all. He wrote, “I am retiring from my job at Harvard at the end of this semester. It has been a privilege to serve the university.” Jorge I. Domínguez refused to comment directly on Karl’s claims, according to the  Chronicle .
