College Instructor Faces Death Threats For ‘Anti-White’ Teachings

Excerpt from:

Source: Thatree Thitivongvaroon / Getty A debate director for Weber State University faces death threats and risks losing his job due to the accusations of one of his students. According to the Standard Examiner, the university has launched an investigation surrounding Ryan Wash , the Black debate director, and Michael Moreno , a White student, who accuses him of teaching an anti-white curriculum. Moreno rails against Wash on his viral YouTube channel , claiming that Wash doesn’t allow students to develop their own argument, but instead forces them to adhere to arguments that he selects or approves. These are usually arguments Moreno says are discriminatory toward white people. His YouTube channel includes videos labeling the professor as “anti-white” and “racist.” Moreno argues that Wash is unfit to teach debate or any other subject and he’s calling for his termination. “I don’t think that students should be forced with that dilemma of ‘regurgitate radical leftist ideology or don’t get to do debate.’ That’s not fair,” Moreno said. “All students should be able to do debate.” Despite Moreno’s claims, a few members of the debate team say that certain recordings of Wash are taken out of context. They argue that the videos show Wash preparing the team for competition by asserting potential arguments that they could use or arguments that they can face. Wash also has the same sentiment. “The larger message and what’s being talked about, especially in that first video, is (that) I was trying to teach them about perspectivism,” Wash said. ”… People’s vantage points, their experiences, their cultures, their social location, guide how they navigate the world, what they understand to be true, what they don’t understand to be true, and those are the things that we… have to navigate in debate.” Moreno’s YouTube videos contain his own commentary along with edited video and audio clips of Wash, Moreno, and other students at debate practices. Moreno also featured a link to the full audio used to make the video, however, the link to that audio stopped working on Tuesday afternoon. The recordings feature quotes from Wash that have caused controversy on social media, including one that opens the first video: “ Our argument will be that space is not real — it’s not real. Science, technology — it’s all fake. It’s a projection of white fantasies that has worked to control our interpretation of how the world works.” The clips were made at a debate retreat prior to the start of the semester and at practices early in the semester. Moreno, a first-year student who was still fresh on the team, stopped participating in practices one to two weeks into the fall semester, according to him, although Wash and other team members have slightly different accounts. Moreno’s peers and Wash say that they had no knowledge that they were being recorded. The fact that Moreno uploaded the recordings to the Internet also made them accessible to other debate teams. The uploaded clips are against Weber State policy, which requires students to “ obtain the faculty member’s permission before recording lectures” and prohibits students from creating “an audio or video record of any person while on university premises without his/her prior knowledge,” though it’s not against the law in Utah.  Because of the videos, Wash says that his personal contact info has been shared online, a tactic known as doxxing, and he says that he’s received more than 100 messages containing racial slurs and even death threats. On Tuesday, November 5, Wash received his first threatening call to his cellphone. “It’s become a really unsafe situation to where we’ve had to take precautions not only to protect me, but protect the students,” Wash said. He explained some threats even mentioned the Ku Klux Klan, saying that the racist group will take “ appropriate action,” although the people sending the messages do not explicitly say that they’re members of the group. The Weber County Attorney’s Office is aware of the alleged threats and is cooperating with the Weber State Police Department to investigate, according to deputy Weber County attorney Branden Miles. Debate team members have also been offered police escorts to their classes. Meanwhile, Moreno says he hasn’t received any threats because of his videos. One campus group, Never Neutral Union, has formed calling for Moreno’s expulsion. One debate team and NNU member, Rei Olsen, defended Wash, saying, “ It is very common, at least in college debate, that the coaches just say, ‘This is the argument you’re running — as a school, we all run the same argument.’ But Ryan is amazing at letting us all run what we want to run.” Moreno also accuses Wash of requiring arguments to include mention of oppression based on gender, race, class or sexual orientation, even if the debate topic isn’t directly related to these themes. Moreno said this method encourages a victim mentality. However, Wash argues that his approval of an argument is “ whether or not it can stand up to scrutiny.” He said gender, race, class, and sexual orientation are not required features of every topic or argument, but they do come up often in the arguments of opposing teams, so it’s important that the Weber State team be ready to address them.  Moreno said that he told Wash that he felt “hated by everyone,” and Wash assured him that he wasn’t. Moreno still argued that Wash was “ vulgar and rude to me. He does not like me.” The university is continuing their investigation into both sides, according to executive director of marketing and communications J ohn Kowalewski. President Brad Mortensen also added that “ if disciplinary action is taken, it is the university’s long-standing policy that it does not publicly share or discuss personnel or student conduct violations.” SEE ALSO: High School Coach Whose ‘White Power’ And N-Word Video Went Viral Is Shocked People Are Upset Diamond And Silk Get Dragged For Bizarrely Comparing Biden And Warren To Salt And Sugar

College Student In Birmingham Almost Lost Her Job Because She Wore A Headscarf Over Her Coily Ponytail

A Black University of Alabama at Birmingham student says she was threatened with the loss of her job before the school’s human resources office intervened, after she wore a scarf that was not to her employers liking. Felicia Layton, a 21-year-old junior studying kinesiology claim her employers at one of the university’s day care centers sent her home on Thursday because she violated the workplace dress code policy by tying a headscarf around her ponytail, according to AL.com . “APPARENTLY THIS IS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND I WILL BE FIRED IF SOMETHING [ISN’T] DONE TO IT (flat iron it) BY TOMORROW!,” Layton wrote in a now viral Facebook post. “I [won’t] say much because [I’m] not even the type to argue with no one about how things that are basically RACIST but being labeled as something else!”   Layton has worked at the daycare since 2017 and went on to say that she was tired from the daily requirements it takes to maintain her 4c hair texture which requires a lot of effort to upkeep. “I HAVE THE MOST 4C hair i have ever seen and baby I can barely put it in a ponytail so if this isnt well groomed and professional enou gh to be at a DAYCARE idk what is! My students and their parents love me & If its a problem with management that my 4c hair to be flatiron or ‘well groomed’ this is not where my hard work needs to be,” she continued.  The post has over 1k shares and 600 comments. Email Submit In an interview with the school’s newspaper Layton said she was also frustrated over what is deemed as acceptable in the workplace when it comes to Black hairstyles versus those of other races. “I feel like the rule is belittling and racist,” she said. “First of all, it’s not ok because the rule was made only for a specific group of people. You’re not going to tell a Caucasian person not to wear a headwrap to work.” Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). After word of the post went viral, Layton updated it to say that the university’s Human Resources office contacted her to resolve the issue. According to AL.com, the dress code violation was no longer in practice. “We are aware of this post and are looking into it now to gather facts,” Paulette Dilworth, Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, wrote in a statement obtained by AL.com. “We take concerns like these seriously and will take appropriate action based on our findings. As an institution, UAB is committed to advancing diversity as a core value and to promoting an inclusive campus with respect and dignity for our faculty, staff and students.” As we know Black women and men are often unfairly policed over wearing their hair the way it grows out of their head due to respectability politics which are birthed in the global obsession over European beauty standards. A number of states including California and New York have introduced and passed anti-discrimination legislation pertaining to natural hairstyles. It may be time for Alabama to get on board as well. Olivette Otele Becomes First Black Woman History Professor In The UK

The rest is here:

D r. Olivette Otele is breaking barriers for Black women in the United Kingdom’s higher education system. Otele has made history by becoming the first Black woman history professor in the UK, Blavity reported. Black British history has just been made! Dr. Olivette Otele is now the first Black woman to be a history professor in the UK https://t.co/Kfb9jKJNPR pic.twitter.com/x6lgwDI82P — Blavity News (@Blavity) October 24, 2018 She was chosen to lead history courses at Bath Spa University’s Newton Park on Duchy of Cornwall campus, the news outlet writes. Otele—a native of Cameroon—has several degrees under her belt, including a degree in literature and history from the Paris-based Universite La Sorbonne, a Master of Advanced Study, and her doctorate degree. Her work has been featured in several publications and she has penned her own book. Otele’s work is centered on history and how it has shaped race and identity in the UK. After being appointed, she took to Twitter to share her excitement about taking on the new role. “BIG NEWS: my people, @BathSpaUni has awarded me a professorship and a Chair in History,” she tweeted. “May this open the door 2many hard working women, especially WoC, even + specifically Black women, in academia in general & in History in particular. In strength, peace and love my ppl.” Otele believes that exploring history is imperative to understanding the state of society today. She also says that opening up and generating conversations about what has happened in the past can create unity. “I still (naively I’m told) believe that understanding the past and who we are as people will show us the way forward. History is about sharing stories and coming together as communities of people. That’s why one of my main areas of research is memory and memorialization of the past,” she said in an interview . “Understanding that each one of us has the power to make our world an interesting and wonderful place is crucial. Historians don’t just tell stories. They engage with the workings of human nature. Even ‘just’ telling the story is a powerful act that can be turned into a tool for social justice.” This has been a big year for Black women in academia. In August, it was announced that for the first time in Harvard University’s history, four of the institution’s schools were being led by African-American women. O ver a century ago Ethel Tremaine Robinson and Inman Edward Page broke racial barriers at Brown University by becoming some of the first Black students to graduate from the institution. Now, the two will be honored by the Ivy League school with a building named after them, the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reported. To celebrate the legacies of two pioneering black graduates, Brown University will rename its J. Walter Wilson Building in recognition of Inman Edward Page and Ethel Tremaine Robinson. #BrownBAR18 https://t.co/R5PhpiPy10 — Brown University (@BrownUniversity) September 23, 2018 The university will rename the J. Walter Wilson Building—which sits in a central part of campus—to pay homage to Robinson and Page, the news outlet writes. The building, which opened 56 years ago, initially housed life science laboratories. A few years ago, after being renovated, it transformed into a space where students can get a range of different services; spanning from financial aid help to mail services. Both Robinson and Page made their marks in the realm of education respectively. Robinson led literature and English courses at Howard University and guided one of her students to help her launch Alpha Kappa Alpha which is the country’s first Black sorority. Page went on to serve as president at historically Black colleges and universities, including the Lincoln Institute, the Agricultural and Normal University, Roger Williams University, and Western Baptist College. “Inman Page was born into slavery, sought liberty and opportunity and found them at Brown — and he saw the power of education to cultivate the innate ‘genius’ in everyone,” Brown University President Christina Paxson said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “Ethel Robinson broke a color barrier and a glass ceiling when she graduated from Brown in 1905. Together, these two pioneers embodied the faith in learning, knowledge and understanding that has animated Brown for generations.” The building is slated to be officially renamed in 2019. The news surrounding the renaming of the building comes just weeks after it was announced that students and faculty at the University of Mississippi are leading an effort to rename their journalism school after Civil Rights advocate, journalist, and educator Ida B. Wells-Barnett . SEE ALSO: Ole Miss Faculty, Students Fight To Have Journalism School Renamed After Ida B. SMH: “Churchgoing” Electrician Coldcocks Woman Into A Coma Over A Parking Space!!!

Lana Rosas, 25, was holding a parking spot for her boyfriend between two parked cars outside 520 E. 14th St. at 11:40 p.m. last Friday when Oscar Fuller drove up in a silver minivan. A 35-year-old electrician named Oscar Fuller — whose prior busts include weapons possession and felony assault — jumped out and started screaming at Rosas when she claimed she was holding the space, police sources said. Fuller then “punched [her] in the face with so much force that the woman flew off her feet,” according to court papers. “She was on a date with the man she loves, and this horrific thing happen to her,” her mother said. The victim’s uncle, Mark Rosas, fumed, “We have idiots out here who try to take matters into their own hands . . . Animals like that need to be caged up.” A police source added, “The victim suffered permanent brain damage. It’s uncertain whether or not she will survive her injuries.” 35-year-old Fuller fled the scene, but police were able to get his license plate number and a description from witnesses. He was arrested at his home in Jamaica, Queens and later picked out of a lineup as the perpetrator of the attack. He is being charged with felony assault and is in custody at the Manhattan Detention Center on $100,000 bail. “I would never intend to physically hurt a woman,” he said in a statement through his lawyer, Thomas Kenniff. “If there is anything I could do to strengthen her recovery, I would do it.” The lawyer accused Rosas of starting the fight and insists surveillance video shows her throwing the first punch. “She hit him in the face,” Kenniff said. “My client has the injuries to prove it.” But a police source said Fuller admitted to punching a woman at the scene. Rosas’ mother was outraged he would blame her daughter. “So she was the aggressor? Really?” she asked. “She’s 4-foot-11. How is she the aggressor? “It doesn’t matter what she said to him or what he said back. He hit her twice, and he hit her hard enough to shake her brain and make it blow up.” Rosas remains at Bellevue Hospital, where doctors had opened her skull to relieve pressure on her brain. At her Clinton Avenue apartment in the Tremont section, where she lives alone, the super described Rosas as a tiny beauty who weighs about 100 pounds. Despite Fuller’s extensive arrest record dating to 1994, his lawyer and neighbors described him as a helpful family man. “He is a beautiful father of a 4-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter,” Kenniff said. “He’s a churchgoing man.” SMH… He must have missed all the sermons about loving thy neighbor as thyself. This is just tragic. Permanent brain damage sounds like a grim prognosis — and over a damn parking space? It ain’t that serious people. We’re hoping Lana fully recovers. Source

Stay In School Kids!: Northwestern University Professor Offers Live Demonstration On The Use Of Sex Toys During Class!

Sounds like a helluva way to “educate” yourself… A Northwestern University psychology professor was in hot water Thursday for an after-class session in which a couple demonstrated the use of a sex toy. University President Morton Schapiro said he was “troubled and disappointed” by the February 21 incident and had ordered an investigation. “Many members of the Northwestern community are disturbed by what took place on our campus,” Schapiro said in a statement. “So am I.” Professor J. Michael Bailey provided his own account of the optional event in his human sexuality course, saying he wants students to learn about sexual diversity and information from “real people.” Students who witnessed the incident had been told repeatedly by a guest speaker what was about to happen would be graphic, the professor said in a statement. About 100 students chose to attend following a larger lecture, affiliate WGN said. The guest speaker at the demonstration had this to say: “We gave them plenty of warning. We had nobody leave at that point,” Melvoin-Berg told CNN Chicago affiliate WLS, adding the demonstration was meant to be educational. “We only got positive feedback, 100% positive feedback during and after. The students were respectful. They were smart and asked good questions, intelligent questions and seemed engaged in the idea of human sexuality,” Of course at least 1 student was a hater: “For me, I’m glad I didn’t see it. It was a little too explicit for me, and if I were in the class, if I would have stayed for the demonstration, I probably would have left. I know a couple of my friends did get up and leave,” student Diana Lorenzini told CNN affiliate WLS. At least one student wasn’t a f**king prude: Brianne Williams, another student, said “Dr. Michael Bailey is one of our finest professors here, and his class is about opening people’s minds up.” The school president goes on to say: “Although the incident took place in an after-class session that students were not required to attend and students were advised in advance, several times, of the explicit nature of the activity, I feel it represented extremely poor judgment on the part of our faculty member,” Schapiro said in his statement. “I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary or in keeping with Northwestern University’s academic mission.” These are students, but they are also grown a** people, and if they want to spend time out of class learning how to properly bust one off, then who is the University to complain? C’mon Schapiro, orgasms are good for morale… Do you think there is anything wrong with the demonstration??? Source
