The Inspiration To Create ‘Hair Love’ Came From The Lack Of Representation Of Black Father & Daughters

Source: Sony Pictures Animation / Sony Pictures Animation When the visuals for Matthew A. Cherry’s Hair Love came across our computer screen, we rejoiced at imagery that showed a Black father and daughter in such a positive light. It was the representation we rarely see, even if it is a cartoon. MUST READ:  Animated Short Film ‘Hair Love’ Celebrates Black Father & Daughter Relationships Hair Love , an animated short film about a father who takes on the battle of doing his daughter’s hair, will premiere ahead of The Angry Birds 2 movie in theaters this weekend, broadcasting the image in front of millions of children and families. We caught up with director Matthew A. Cherry and producer Peter Ramsey, who both opened up about creating the animated short and why it is important for all to see. HelloBeautiful: What inspired you to create Hair Love? Matthew:  I was seeing a lot of viral videos of African-American dads doing their daughter’s hair hitting the timeline and I always like to share family friendly stuff like that. They were going extra viral, 100K retweets, and I would always share videos of moms interacting with their kids too and it would do OK but never as big as that. Obviously they were cute videos but I would come to learn later that part of it was that people weren’t used to seeing these images of African-American fathers doing these type of interactions with their kids (especially when the hair would be moving and breaking rubber bands and hitting dad in the eye). The idea of hair having a mind of its own was the linchpin that created this idea. HB: How does it feel to finally have your work being shown on such a massive platform after so much work to get it made and funded? Matthew:  It’s kind of surreal. This literally started with an idea through Kickstarter and for it to be a New York Times best selling book and now about to be in theaters across the country is pretty crazy. It’s definitely surreal. I just really hope that it inspires other creators. Sometimes i think we waste so much time reaching out to people thinking that they have to help us with our ideas and help move them forward and sometimes all you have to do is put it out there and take that risk and bet on yourself and trust that you can raise the money yourself and get the idea to other likeminded creatives that will be able to help you with it and bring it to market. HB: How was it for you to be involved in the short film and taking on the role as Executive Producer? How was that process for you?  Peter: It was great because from minute one, I believed in Matthew. I knew he was a really talented, energetic, inspiring guy in his work and in his life. I got to see the story he wanted to tell and it felt like it was right for the time, its got its heart in the right place, it’s going to really speak to people, all of those things made it really easy for me. Really I’ve just been a cheerleader. I’ve just been doing whatever I could, whether it’s advice or encouragement or whatever little thing I could offer to help move it down the line. It’s Matthew and a fantastic team of really talented people working on it that have really brought it to life. Matthew:  Yeah, Bruce Smith, Everett Downing, Stacey Newton, Monica Young, Karen Toliver. It’s a great team. Peter : It’s been a whole lot of work and whole lot of love What did you learn about fatherhood in the process?  Peter:  I have three kids. I’ve experienced a lot of moments like this. I think from this film specifically, the thing that jumps out at me is a lot of it is about people supporting each other in family. You can see everybody in this family in some way shape or form has supported each other. It’s about the idea of a father listening to his daughter and her communicating something that’s really important to her and him understanding why it’s so important and doing what he can to help her express who she is and what she feels. I think that’s a huge part of what drives this movie and makes it feel special. It might not be something you think about watching it but that’s what’s under the surface. That part of a parent/child relationship I think is something people need to pay a lot of attention to and think about that because even the smallest kid is still a real person deserving respect and being allowed to express themselves. Catch  Hair Love in theaters August 13. RELATED STORIES: Cornrows, Feed-Ins And Fulani Braids, Oh My! Uum…Okay: Polar Vortex Video Challenges Have People Experimenting In Freezing Weather

Here is the original post:

Source: Wojtek Zagorski / Getty The polar vortex has been quite offensive these past couple of days. As of Thursday, it’s already taken over a number of states in the U.S. with the Midwest being hit the hardest. According to ABC 6 , some states in this area are experiencing temperatures in the negative 30s, and if you add wind chills to the mix, states like Illinois have experienced weather that feels like negative 57 degrees . According to The New York Times ,  eight weather-related deaths have already been recorded in the Midwest while the east coast isn’t that much safer with cities like New York experiencing single digit temperatures. But despite all this, folks will still find a way to capture the madness on camera. You can blame it on snowed-in boredom or you can blame it on plain curiosity. But whatever the reasoning, people are playing in the snow in the most bizarre and hilarious ways. First, a few people are putting their dogs on the line to test the weather. Some pet owners have been letting their canines out into the cold just to find out if they’d be thrilled for a walk. For many, the answer was a hard no. Just let Twitter user @IamNPaterson and her dog tell it… My dog when the #polarvortex arrives in #newjersey “No. Absolutely not.” @njdotcom pic.twitter.com/uUFKWu2BzV — Natalie Paterson (@IamNPaterson) January 30, 2019 Then, there were people who put their scientist hat on to discover the shocking effects of freezing temperatures. One Twitter user posted a video of herself soaking a T-shirt then sticking it outside in the cold. The results were a clothing item that could stand on its own after just a little over an hour outside. It’s no joke out here. One of the most viral videos, however, is a challenge that carried over from previous years. People have been boiling water and throwing it into the freezing air, creating a snow-making affect. Peep the slow motion spectacle below.   According to Wired , because the water is so hot, it has enough energy to transition from liquid to gas quickly. When the hot water is projected into the cold air, a few things happen. First, the hot water is making water vapor thanks to evaporation. Second, the water is breaking into smaller blobs of water as it moves through the air. Both the evaporation and smaller blobs cause the water to cool off quickly. In addition to this, the cold air can’t hold a lot of water vapor (which is why the air is much drier in the winter), so the water vapor doesn’t stay in the air, but it condenses out. Viola. Instant snow. People across social media have been trying their luck at the phenomenon whether it be -10 degrees temperatures or -20 degrees  outside. Whatever the case might be, make sure to stay warm and stay safe. The polar vortex will still disrespect you and your entire video.

Would You Do It? Father’s Lesson On Bullying Goes Viral And Folks Have A Lot To Say

Read the original:

Source: GeorgiaCourt / Getty Bullying has always been a thing, but with the rise of the world wide web, we’re allowed to see the trauma go down in real time. We often see viral videos of kids who’ve been bullied, crying to the camera , explaining why it’s such a horrible thing to do someone. Sometimes, the parents chime in too to let the world know their kid has been treated bad. But it’s rare that we get to see the oppressor themselves get publicly chastised, especially by the very people that raised them. That didn’t stop one Ohio from putting his daughter on blast after she was kicked off the school bus for bullying another student for the second time this year. Matt Cox said his 10-year old daughter came home one day and said “daddy you have to drive me to school next week.” But instead the wise dad thought he’d teach her a lesson by making her walk 5 miles to school the next day in 36 degree weather. He said in the video, “A lot of the children feel today that the things their parents do for them is a right and not a privilege. Such as, taking their children to school in the morning or even bus rides to school in the morning, All of that is a privilege and should be treated as such. So today, my beautiful daughter is going to walk five miles to school in 36-degree weather.” In just a matter of a couple of days, the video already has 21 million views. Some folks applaud the father’s unorthodox approach to disciplining his daughter for her actions. One commenter wrote: “Good for you Dad! Seems like it worked! All parents should take a lesson here. Sometimes you just gotta do the tough love!” But as with anything in life, there are folks who don’t agree with the way things were done. “Cure bullying with bullying. Great lesson, what’s next beating your kids so they don’t hit others?” , said one heckler. But no sweat off Matt’s back. He told reporters he stands by his decision, and he’ll do it again if he had to. “I just want the kids to know that words truly do hurt. They cut very deep and have lasting effects. I hope that parents hold their kids accountable.” He even gave followers an update on his arguable tactic, writing, “Lesson learned! Still has all her extremities intact is happy and healthy and seems to have a new outlook on bullying as well as a new appreciation for some of the simple things in life she used to take for granted #HOLDOURKIDSACOUNTABLE #STOPBULLYING” We should thanks dad’s like these who are helping to raise one less American bully. We already have too many of those.
