Mashonda Hangs Up Her Reality TV Star Title, Won’t Do Another Season Of “Love & Hip-Hop”

You gotta give it to Mashonda : she sure knows how to keep up that good girl/deer in the headlights/”I never saw that coming” image, doesn’t she? In a recent interview she discussed how she ended up on Love & Hip-Hop to begin with and why she’s not doing the second season which has yet to be announced. On joining the cast: Fresh out of a high profile divorce with rapper/producer Swizz Beatz, Mashonda was approached by producers of a new VH1 reality show called Love & Hip Hop. She was asked to star as the lead, but the singer declined at first. “I just felt like being on a show, a reality show, would be too much, so I declined.” It wasn’t until best friend Emily B, also known as the mother of rapper Fabolous’ child sparked a change of heart in Mashonda’s decision. “Are you willing to come on the show to at least give Emily advice on her relationship? The producers were asking me, I thought about it and it made sense, so I said okay.” That’s interesting: these shows usually center around one character who brings the other “real people” together. And Jim Jones and his girlfriend/fiance Chrissy Lampkin seemed to be the only ones who could have achieved that. With THAT particular cast. We digress… On why she was excited about the opportunity: Under the impression that her role would strictly be to help and inspire women around the world through her friendship with Emily, Mashonda agreed to join the cast of Love & Hip Hop. “I really honestly did do the show to help Emily and help women across the United States, to let them know that you’re not the only one that can go through something like this {divorce and heartbreak}.” “In the first episode when you see Emily and myself in the restaurant, that was the first time I saw {her} in like a month and a half, so the reaction was so authentic and everything was so real. The producers loved the fact that I was able to get emotions out of her, because that was the first time Emily cried on screen. They {producers} kept asking me to come back, and I shot about eight scenes with Emily,” says Mashonda. On her reaction while watching the show: “When I watch it, I do get emotional sometimes especially the scene when they went to my house {season finale episode}, and I look at the way I looked ten months ago, and its like wow,” Mashonda pauses then continues, “I was really going through something, I looked trashed. From the way I look now and the way I looked then, it’s a big difference.” The enormous house that Mashonda stood in was being foreclosed; she was leaving that house shown on the show to move into a town house in New Jersey with her young son Kaseem. “Lifestyle means absolutely nothing,” she explains. “I was blessed to experience living in a house that was 21,000 sq feet, driving Bentleys, that stuff comes and goes. I watched so many women lose their selves in that and they don’t know how to act when its gone. Its not going to last forever, so when it was over, it was over. I just knew it was time to start over. I live in a town house now, and I’m happy that it’s mine.” On why she’s too good to be one of these reality show broads: I just don’t feel like at this point in my life, Love and Hip Hop represents who I am, it’s just a chapter that is over,” she states. “When I shot the show, I thought that it was going to be like more of a sisterhood, but when I saw a lot of the drama and the beef, I was a little surprised, I was like wow, okay, I didn’t know this was going to be apart of what this is.” Not to worry: she’ll be back in the spotlight soon enough with a book which she says is “self-help/memoir”-ish, but isn’t a tell all. Photographer Captures Essence Of Greek Life At HBCUs [Video]

Despite attempts by filmakers like Spike Lee ( School Daze ) and Sylvain White ( Stomp The Yard ) it has been almost impossible to capture the true spirit of Fraternity and Sorority life on film–until now. On April 10th photographer John Ledbetter , a member of the Beta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc at Virginia State University, posted a highlight reel from a recent probate show of Spring 2011 initiates. The moving clip is anchored by Dear Euphoria’s “That You Would” and features the final moments as twenty-two young men make the transition from being initiates to being members of the fraternity. In the days since it was published the three-minute clip has received over 50,000 views and universal praise from members of various fraternities and sororities across the country, not just in his own. “It’s funny because I just posted it on my Facebook page and went to get something to eat,” says Ledbetter, who was initiated at Beta Gamma in 2003. “When I came back it went a little viral. I have a friend from Canada who knows nothing about Frats but she said when she saw this video it just summed it up for her. She understands what it’s about now.” Spring 2011 – Beta Gamma Chapter from John Ledbetter on Vimeo . Ledbetter, who is employed by the government in D.C., is a self-taught photographer who shoots in his spare time on weekends. He admits that his true passion is music and that the song is what inspired him to shoot the probate or “coming out” festivities. “The aim was just to do highlights,” he says. “Virginia State University has a lot of Greek pride and Roger Stadium is packed for all the probates. My probate was the same. We start at Williams Dorm and we walk down the strip into the stadium. I knew the show like the back of my hand.” Inspired by the silent movie genius Charlie Chaplin, Ledbetter wanted to tell the story with music. Mother Nature proved to be a willing assistant director as the elements came into play adding dramatic effect. “I was praying that it would be outside because there were reports of rain,” he remembers. “Visually the natural light makes for a better shot so it was a bonus that we were outside. Then of course the rain started falling and it was crazy. I kept my camera out. I said I don’t care if this zaps out I’m getting this footage!” Ledbetter shot the clip with a Canon 5D and a series of lenses; 35mm L series, 24 to 70 L series, 70-200 L series. It took him an hour to chop it up in Final Cut and he used Magic Bullet Looks for the color correction. It was about 12GB worth of footage that he chopped down into four minutes. “A lot of people are fascinated because we don’t see shows like that nationwide anymore,” he says. “But my style is not scripted. What I did was just off of feeling.” To see more of John Ledbetter’s work you can visit his website  Jaydexterphotoblog.com

Chrissy Lampkin Talks Proposing To Jim Jones; Should Women Ever Propose?

Read this article:

Rapper Jim Jones’ girlfriend Chrissy Lampkin proposes to him on this season of VH1′s “Love & Hip Hop,” as seen in the series’ trailer . She recently talked to Necole Bitchie about her decision to do so. Radio DJ, BET Host Killed In NYC Attention Parents & Teachers: Teens Are Having Sex No Matter What You Say Why did you propose? I did it to let him know that I love him enough and I am proud and happy enough to display that to the world. That’s what that’s about. Eventually, we will get married. Am I rushing it? No. Of course people have opinions about me asking him to marry me, but I felt it was the right thing to do. I love him enough and I wanted to share that. It’s how I felt and what I wanted. You need to know what you’re doing with your life. You need to have direction. If that thing doesn’t happen the traditional way, it still needs to happen. So why waste your time? I figured I would cut to the chase. What are we waiting for? Do you feel upset that he never asked you first? We talk about it a lot, so it’s not like it was something that wasn’t going to happen. I felt comfortable enough to ask him. It’s not like it was something that was never talked about and I jumped out the window with it. I knew that it was something we both wanted. I didn’t mind being the first one to step up. We’ve been together almost seven years. Have you ever reached a breaking point with Jim? When you think about it–what relationship are you going to find where you’ll be free of any of that. You trade in one set or bullsh*t for another set of bullsh*t. [laughs] It’s about finding the bullsh*t you can live with. Jimmy’s a good guy and he wants to see a smile on my face at all times. I can’t ask for anymore than that. There’s been time when our relationship wasn’t always on the same page. We had talks about it. We’ve realized that we’d rather be together dysfunctional, than apart. Relationships go through stages and you should always be learning and growing. When that stops, you have a problem. Does Jim support you [financially]? Yeah. He takes good care of me. I don’t care how people take it. I get flack all the time. He’s my man. What–you want him not to? I came up in a time when that’s what men did and aspire to do.
