‘Hunger Games’ Tracking Big: But What Does It Mean?

This week’s Hobnobbing explains the film’s pre-release numbers. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Fans of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian teen drama ” The Hunger Games ” have long predicted that the series’ big-screen adaptation would emerge victorious from its box-office battle. And now, it seems, preliminary estimates support the stan speculation. Deadline reports that the early tracking figures for the March 23 release are “numbers every film studio can only dream about,” with 23 percent of respondents selecting the film as “First Choice” and 54 percent indicating “Definite Interest.” In fact, one estimate Deadline editor Nikki Finke received predicted the film could open to more than $70 million — narrowly besting the “Twilight” opening-weekend gross of $69.6 million. All good news for fans fretting over the series’ fate … but what do these numbers really mean? Tracking, in essence, measures the results of a studio’s marketing campaign and is by no means an exact science. “The real use of tracking is to measure the effectiveness of the marketing weeks out from release, so you can make adjustments while there’s still time,” Vinny Bruzzese, president of the worldwide motion-picture tracking firm OTX, told TheWrap as part of an interesting piece examining the practice. “By the time the official prediction comes out on the day of the release, it’s fairly useless.” Clearly, Lionsgate’s clever campaigns (including Capitol Couture , puzzle scavenger hunts and advanced screening giveaways) have resonated with fans and non-fans alike, gaining plenty of exposure for the fledgling franchise. However, we must remember that tracking is not necessarily meant to prognosticate box-office returns (TheWrap’s story calls such predictions nothing more than “parlor tricks”). For argument’s sake, however, let’s say that “The Hunger Games” does indeed meet its $70 million expectations. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told Bloomberg that the debut installment would need to earn $100 million in overall domestic sales to justify a sequel. With a potential $70 million opening weekend, the film would need to gross only $30 million more to reach that benchmark. And unless attendance drops off as steeply as the Arena’s cliff, it will prevail, all but guaranteeing “Catching Fire” will, well, catch fire. ‘Hunger Games’ Goes Viral For 100-Day Countdown

In this week’s Hobnobbing, we examine Lionsgate’s latest attention-grabbing campaign. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lions Gate One-hundred days can seem like a pittance when, say, it’s the first week of September and you’ve pleasantly (and too quickly) whiled away three months’ worth of summer vacation. But 100 days can feel like an eternity when it’s all that’s standing between a fan and a highly anticipated film debut. Such is the case for the big-screen adaptation of ” The Hunger Games ,” which hits theater March 23, 2012 — exactly 100 days from today. To sate fans’ appetites and capitalize on a milestone date, Lionsgate launched a viral campaign called #HungerGames100 Poster Puzzle Hunt. The online scavenger scramble recruited 100 different websites (including MTV ) to host a piece of a puzzle and tweet a relevant link. Once solved, the puzzle would reveal the newest poster for the film starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. In keeping with the film’s Twitter-heavy rollout, intrigued fans took to the social-networking site to chat about the project. @mayachelsie wrote, “This #HungerGames100 is making me too excited. Oh gosh. I think I’m gonna throw up… 100 DAYS TILL THE HUNGER GAMES!” Similarly, @KarimaHessen enthused, “#HungerGames100 This is going to be the longest 100 days of my liiiiiife!!” Though many fans were excited by the film’s impending debut and the campaign itself, the prospect of hunting down 100 individual pieces was daunting for many. @16princessful mused, “I am not gonna even try to find all 100 pieces cuz I don’t even know where to start lol. #HungerGames100.” @mollsabeth chimed in, “If I didn’t have a job, I would absolutely be trying to solve the #HungerGames100 puzzle.” Whether you joined the hunt or waited for a more industrious (not to mention patient) fan to solve the puzzle, it’s hard to deny Lionsgate caught the Internet’s attention, with many high-profile sites participating (in addition to MTV, Entertainment Weekly, E! Online and People all played ball) and the campaign, at times, trending on Twitter. This isn’t the first time Lionsgate has utilized the power of the interwebs. Back in October, MTV and a handful of other sites participated in a concerted rollout of the film’s character posters ( hello, Peeta! ), and, of course, Twitter went into a tizzy for the film’s first teaser and trailer debuts. Though we can only speculate as to what viral treasures await in 2012, we want to know what you think of these types of campaigns. Quirky and cool? Or too much work? ‘Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence A ‘Powerful Person’

‘Like Crazy’ co-star Anton Yelchin saw Lawrence ‘transform’ into Katniss Everdeen at the gym. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate We’d heard “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence talk about the intensity of her workouts to prepare for the role of the arrow-slinging reluctant warrior Katniss Everdeen . And we’d heard director Gary Ross brag on his star’s behalf, using phrases like “intensely physical,” “physically demanding” and “very rigorous” to describe Lawrence’s training program. But the Oscar-nominated actress’ physical transformation into the District 12 tribute didn’t really hit home until we checked out the “Hunger Games” teaser footage we debuted in August at the MTV Video Music Awards. We just didn’t know what to expect. Her “Like Crazy” co-star Anton Yelchin, however, knew exactly what was coming. Months after their romantic drama premiered at Sundance (and walked away with the Grand Jury Prize), the duo ended up at the same gym, prepping for the next steps in their cinematic careers. “I was training for a film called ‘Odd Thomas’ that I was doing at the same gym Jen was training [at for] the bow stuff and all the running,” Yelchin told MTV News recently. “I got to see her and talk to her. I think she’s amazing, and she’s a good friend of mine.” And after checking out the “Hunger Games” teaser, Yelchin had firsthand knowledge of what it took for Lawrence to become Katniss. He was impressed, but not surprised. “When I saw Jen, it was different kinds of physical training she was going through, like running training,” he said. “She’s such a powerful person. She can do anything she puts her mind to. If she needs to transform for something, she’ll transform. If she needs to learn how to kill you with the bow, she’ll do that. She’ll do anything she needs to do.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
