Postcard from Venice: Michelle Williams (and Her Sunbonnet) Takes the Day in Meek’s Cutoff

I don’t know about you, but even when I haven’t been immersed for days in the beauty and sophistication of a city like Venice, I want to head for the hills whenever I see sunbonnets in the opening shots of a movie. For that reason, the early moments of Kelly Reichardt’s ultra-quiet period drama Meek’s Cutoff had me worried. The picture is set in 1845 along the Oregon Trail — Reichardt’s home territory — and in its early moments we watch as three women in calico dresses cross a river on foot. One carries a basket on her head; another, a birdcage with a parakeet inside. As the third emerges from the water, we see that she’s pregnant. The other members of this little troupe include the women’s husbands and the pregnant woman’s preteen son, as well as a know-it-all guide who may, they fear, be leading them down the wrong path.

Ron Sveden had been battling emphysema for months when his condition deteriorated. He was steeling himself for a cancer diagnosis when X-rays revealed the growth in his lung. Doctors believe that Mr Sveden ate the pea at some point, but it “went down the wrong way” and sprouted. “One of the first meals I had in the hospital after the surgery had peas for the vegetable. I laughed to myself and ate them,” Mr Sveden told a local Boston TV reporter. Red more….. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-10945050 added by: Cubejam

Prospect, Illinois, will finally get his chance to do just that. He got a big leg up on Wednesday night at the two-hour “Idol” finale, when surprise guest-star Bret Michaels — who joined third-place finisher Casey James for an unannounced duet on Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” — offered some sage career advice. Speaking to reporters backstage, Michaels, who performed at the Nokia Theatre without telling his doctors, applauded loudly when it was announced that DeWyze had won his battle with season-long front-runner Crystal Bowersox. “Here’s the thing: Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment, get good people around you, and you’ll have a long career,” said Michaels, who was at the “Idol” finale despite a series of recent health scares that include a brain hemorrhage and a recently discovered hole in his heart . “That’s really the truth. That’s what makes it work. Believe in yourself. If someone is pushing you down the wrong path, [say], ‘I gotta do it my way,’ ” he said. “I also would tell him … make sure you love what you do. And don’t ever become jaded. If you become jaded, you lose your soul.” What advice would you give Lee DeWyze? Share it in the comments.
