I get just as tired of writing this crap up as you probably do reading about it, but for some reason it feels like the beginning of the end of Hollywood in a way: The MPAA ratings board is under assault again for determining the oral-sex sequence featured in Blue Valentine is worthy of at least some of the film’s NC-17, while letting the same act — by two women — slide in the R-rated Black Swan . Oh, and then there’s the kid with the knife.

I moved to New York City in 2004 with two goals: first, to attend and complete journalism school; second, to blow my first freelance paycheck on drinks and dinner at Elaine’s. Because, you know, that’s Where Writers Are (or at least Were) Supposed to Go. I managed the first goal without much difficulty. The second eluded me, alas, after Elaine Kaufman herself threatened to kill me.

Higuain’s hat trick keys Argentina’s win (AP)

Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat trick in Argentina’s 4-1 win over South Korea at the World Cup on Thursday, a result that put the South Americans on the brink of qualifying for the next round from Group B. Higuain scored his first goal in the 33rd minute with a far post header after Nicolas Burdisso flicked on a cross from Maxi Rodriguez.

Mexico denied World Cup hosts South Africa a first victory after Rafael Marquez scored a late equalizer in the 78 th minute leading to a draw 1-1 during the opening match of the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg. But Bafana Bafana netted the first goal of the tournament courtesy of Siphiwe Tshabalala in the first half of the game. The team preserved the World Cup tradition of no host country losing …
