Cee-Lo Calls Viral Explosion Of ‘F— You’ Single ‘Pretty Magical’

‘It’s a pleasant surprise, I must say,” singer says of f-bomb-dropping song. By Gil Kaufman Cee-Lo Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Filmmagic There’s no denying the ear-candy magic in Cee-Lo Green’s f-bomb-dropping kiss-off soul nugget “F— You.” But even the Goodie Mob/ Gnarls Barkley singer himself has been a bit surprised at the viral explosion set off by the lyrics-only video for the first single from his upcoming The Lady Killer album, which has rung up more than 2 million views since it was released last Thursday. “It’s a pleasant surprise, I must say,” the singer told Entertainment Weekly ‘s music blog Music Mix. “I think it’s totally surpassed just about everyone’s expectations. We had a clue — I mean, it’s a very noticeable song — but this has been extraordinary.” Though he’s understating the shockingly catchy nature of the profanity-laced Motown-like ditty, the success is probably a bigger shock to the Smeezingtons production team behind it, which consists of the writing and production trio of Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine. The song came together almost two years into the recording of the singer’s third solo effort and, according to EW, when the producers played him a rough sketch of it in the studio, they weren’t even sure it was worth finishing up. “When Bruno first sung ‘F— You’ to me, they were still a bit indecisive on whether or not it could work at all,” Cee-Lo said. “I was like, ‘I like it. Let’s record it.’ ” Cee-Lo said he got heavily involved in finishing up the tune, pitching in many of the lyrics on the verses, which were somewhat based on his own experiences of being jilted by a lover who was looking for a man with deeper pockets. “I mean, it’s based on something true. … As far as me personally, it’s not a current event. It’s a figurative account. It’s not completely fictitious, though,” he said cryptically. Clearly taken by surprise by the instant success of the low-rent video — which consists of the song’s lyrics printed out over solid color backgrounds — Cee-Lo said his team is working on cooking up a more elaborate clip as well as a profanity-stripped radio edit called “Forget You.” Have you heard or seen the video for Cee-Lo’s “F— You”? New Viral Video: 16 F-Words in Under 4 Minutes

A new song by hip-hop star Cee Lo Green is making its way around the Internet, largely based on the shock value of the song’s title, “F**K YOU,” and its generous use of the obscenity in the lyrics. The song, which clocks in at 3:46, offers 16 instances of the “f-word” – that’s once every 14 seconds. The singer directs the curses toward his former girlfriend and her new beau. “I see you drivin’ ’round town with the girl I love, and I’m like, ‘f**k you,” Cee Lo sings at the start of the upbeat, catchy tune. The song also features 10 uses of s**t, two of a**, and two partial uses of the n-word. A  video posted on YouTube  Aug. 19 from the CeeLoGreen account displays the lyrics in rhythm with the tune. It gathered steam over the weekend, propelling it to over 1.4 million views as of the afternoon of Aug. 23. The video’s information promises a full version “next week.” Sometime on Monday, Aug. 23, YouTube began requiring visitors to sign in to view the video, noting it “may contain content that is inappropriate for some users.” But the embedded version is available for unrestricted viewing on numerous websites, including Cee Lo’s  personal website  and his MySpace page . Clicking on his Myspace page automatically activated the song. Cee Lo, a.k.a. Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, is a member of the popular duo Gnarls Barkley, known for the similarly catchy (but much cleaner) 2006 hit “Crazy.” The online release of “F**K YOU” is a promotion for his upcoming solo album “The Ladykiller.” This isn’t the first time pop singers have tried to use provocative lyrics to get attention. That’s been the story of popular music from the Rolling Stones’ “Some Girls” to Britney Spears’  “If U Seek Amy.” Like this article? B.o.B’s ‘Nothin’ On You’ Came Together ‘Magically,’ Smeezingtons Say

‘We’re melody guys, we sing,’ Phillip Lawrence says of production trio, which includes Bruno Mars. By Jayson Rodriguez Photo: MTV News The making of B.o.B’s breakout hit “Nothin’ on You” was a group effort, according to the song’s producers. Bruno Mars , who is featured on the track, said he and his production partners, Phillip Lawrence and Ari Levine — together they comprise the Smeezingtons — collectively pieced together the music that would eventually top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Me and Phil always had that hook,” Mars told MTV News, spontaneously breaking out into the chorus that is helping to make him one of music’s buzzed-about names. “It was a different melody at first, though,” Lawrence added. “So one day our other partner — the Silent Bob of the Smeezingtons — Ari, he walked into the studio and said he programmed the drums [over],” Mars explained. “It had this old-school hip-hop beat. I said, ‘Gimme the piano,’ and that was the first thing I started playing. Magically, that melody worked with this track we were doing.” The result, of course, was “Nothin’ on You,” which landed atop the charts this year and has become an early contender for song of the summer. Now, the production trio’s services are increasingly in demand. Among the artists they’re hoping to get in the studio with is Keri Hilson, who’ll be prepping her next album. Apart from B.o.B, the Smeezingtons also recently worked with Gnarls Barkley’s Cee-Lo on Mars’ debut EP, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, and are hoping to get back in the lab with him. (“He’s incredible,” Mars said of Cee-Lo.) And their remix of K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag” has been selected as the Coca-Cola anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Smeezingtons intend to apply the same principles that have brought them success so far to future projects, including Bruno Mars’ forthcoming full-length debut. “We’re melody guys, we sing,” Lawrence explained of their sound. “That’s kind of our main focus, to have really good, memorable melodies. We’ll go into the studio, and [Mars will] start playing the piano and I’ll start freestyling or vice versa. We’re heavily influenced by the ’80s [sound].” Are you looking forward to new material from the Smeezingtons? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists B.o.B
