‘Prometheus’ FX Supervisor Gives Inside Look At First Scene

Martin Hill tells the Daily how he set the stage with the visually arresting opening scene. By Kevin P. Sullivan An Engineer in “Prometheus” Photo: This article contains “Prometheus” spoilers. Ridley Scott’s ” Prometheus ” begins with some of the film’s most arresting images. A hairless, pale-skinned Engineer stands atop a waterfall. He drinks a liquid that we may never learn more about, disintegrates and, in turn, creates all of life on Earth. The visuals set the stage for the rest of the film and show Scott’s use of 3-D simultaneously, and now, new videos from the Daily explore the effects work that went into making that shot and the Prometheus’ crash with the Engineer ship. Visual effects supervisor Martin Hill from WETA Digital goes into great detail during his interview about the opening sequence, the creation of life. Not only was the team challenged with creating an impressive visual, but one that succinctly told a complex story. “Because we had such a short amount of time to tell the story of the DNA getting infected, breaking apart, and then re-forming and recombining to show Earth DNA, we had to make the designs of the different DNA quite graphical, quite illustrative of what they were,” Hill said. After some time, the sequence shifts to the microscopic level, traveling inside the veins of the Engineer. For those sequences, Scott instructed the visual effects team to emphasize the destruction being done. “The Engineer’s DNA, we thought, ‘This needs to be quite sinister, but we know it’s going to get infected, and the infection has to look more messed up than the Engineer’s DNA,’ ” Hill said. “We used quite a light color palette for Engineer’s DNA, and then the infection comes on and it’s very melted looking. Ridley actually said to us, ‘It has to feel like war in there. The DNA is just being torn apart.’ ” The actual scene of genetic destruction came together from computer-generated elements, but the inspiration for the look came from a very real-life source of inspiration. “We try to use as much reality as possible, so we were looking at all different kinds of reference, so eventually we settled on fish bones, actual decayed fish spines, to represent the structure of the DNA,” Hill said. “For the infection that rolls across the infected DNA, what we did was carve actual blocks of silicone with the vein structures in there and pumped black ink and oils and all kinds of different materials through those, filmed them, and used the motion of those as the basis for all of our effects for the veins and the effect coursing through his body.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Prometheus.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Justin Bieber Is A ‘True G,’ Big Sean Proclaims

Rapper talks to MTV News about working on Believe ahead of ‘Bieber Live’ at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rob Markman Big Sean Photo: When Justin Bieber enlisted Big Sean for his Believe track “As Long As You Love Me,” the 24-year-old MC didn’t clean up his NSFW act. Instead, Sean found a new way to express his more mature lyrics to the Bieber crowd. “Bieber’s a true G. People may not know that,” Big Sean said recently. “Nah, but he is a good dude, man. And I ain’t toning down nothing — I’m diverse, I can write raps to any type of song.” Sean also revealed to MTV News that on the same day he was recruited to work with the pop star, the rapper got a call from another artist — one who exists on the polar opposite end of the musical spectrum — also wanting to work with him. “It’s crazy! I got a call from Gucci Mane the same day I got a call from Bieber and his people to do two different projects,” Big Sean recalled. “It’s tight that I can be a person that’s so diverse that I can do both of those and it’s not reaching. I’m still me … and I didn’t compromise anything for Bieber. You know, I just didn’t curse, which is easy. I don’t have to curse every day.” Of course, the Bieber/Sean collaboration is definitely more in Justin territory thanks to a pulsing dance beat, courtesy of producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. The pair go back and forth about that special girl over some fist-pumping beats. But Sean is hardly the only rapper who’s giving Believe the co-sign: Drake, Ludacris and Nicki Minaj all make cameos on the release, out on Tuesday (June 19). When we spoke to Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, he told us the singer worked hard to make sure the cameos fit perfectly. “[Justin] and I are both very competitive, and he’d always look at me and go, ‘This is the make-it-or-break-it album, and you got to push me. You got to tell me if I’m not good enough, and I might argue’ … so I really, really pushed him, and we took this album really seriously,” Braun said. (Bieber will talk all about the making of the album tonight on “Bieber Live,” set to air at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!) “But I also had to give it room to grow,” he added. “Sometimes I’d put him in writing sessions for two weeks, and we’d get one song out of it, and it was just because he had to find that place for himself and that music. And as the process went on, he really started hitting his stride. … And I think everyone has a different favorite, but the one common thread is you don’t dislike any songs.” Don’t miss “Bieber Live” tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! Britney Spears Calls ‘X Factor’ A ‘Beautiful Concept’

Spears says she wants to ‘inspire’ contestants on the Fox show. By Jocelyn Vena “X Factor” judges L.A. Reid, Demi Lovato, Simon Cowell and Britney Spears at the FOX Upfront Photo: Desiree Navarro/ Getty Images Britney Spears seems poised and ready to sit beside her fellow “X Factor” judges on the revamped second season of the show . At the Fox upfront this week, the singer appeared alongside fellow newbie Demi Lovato , as well as returning judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, and gushed about the Fox reality show. “Just really being able to be there and inspire the other contestants … they’re so young and they’re trying to fulfill their dreams,” she said at the event. “It’s just a whole beautiful concept. It’s just really cool.” While her negotiations with the show had been making headlines in the weeks leading up to the official announcement, Cowell brushed off all the hoopla, which includes a rumored $15 million payday for joining the show. “A force of nature, I was somewhere in the middle, but I’m thrilled. I love these guys,” he said of getting everyone, including Spears, on board. “I charmed her.” Spears seemed equally taken with the prickly Brit. “He’s adorable. He’s completely adorable. He didn’t have to try hard,” she admitted. Spears’ addition to the show is hardly the only casting making news: Lovato also opened up about having the “X Factor.” While little is known about the final hours going into locking Lovato in for the show, she’s rumored to be taking in $1 million, according to Gossip Cop . Lovato was on a short list of possible contenders to appear on the show that also reportedly included Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne. “I’m so excited to be here,” she said. “I guess you called,” she added with Simon by her side. “And that’s how it got set up, just a phone call.” In addition to getting warm and fuzzy about each other in the interview, Cowell shared that the judges will be filming in the next couple weeks when they hit up Austin, Texas, to begin scoping out talent. And if you think the claws might come out then, Reid assured viewers that that won’t be the case. “Oh no, we’re gonna be really sweet to each other,” he said. “Nothing controversial. It’ll be perfect.” Related Artists Britney Spears
