Miley Cyrus Defends Gay Rights Tattoo

Cyrus tweeted a photo of her equal-sign tattoo over the weekend, prompting debate among fans regarding gay rights. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus’ new equal rights tattoo Photo: Miley Cyrus’ Twitter Miley Cyrus has never shied away from speaking her mind, and over the weekend she posted a photo of her latest body ink on Twitter : an equal-sign tattoo on her middle finger. In addition to sharing with the world her pro-gay rights stance via tat, she tweeted the message, “All LOVE is equal.” However, the photo quickly prompted a debate on her Twitter account when fans began to respond to Miley’s tattoo with mixed feelings. “Where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn’t,” Miley tweeted to one fan who questioned her belief in God after displaying her support of the gay community. “GOD is the only judge honey. GOD is love.” But when her fans began attacking the fan who questioned her, Miley defended her for sharing her opinion with the world. “Dude everyone lay off … Love u! Everyone is entitled 2 opinions! If u don’t stand 4 something you’ll fall for anything.” Her Twitter profile shares a similar message: “Let your light shine. Be a source of strength & courage. Share your wisdom. RADIATE LOVE.” This isn’t the first time that Miley’s sharing her beliefs on Twitter has sparked debate. In a Parade magazine interview in March 2010, Cyrus said that one of the reasons she had quit Twitter for a time was that she was getting angry tweets from fans who didn’t agree with her support of gay marriage. She returned to Twitter earlier this year. “There has been so much controversy sometimes about what I’ve said or done because I believe there are no mistakes, because God is the only one who can judge us,” Cyrus explained. “That’s the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person.” What do you think of Miley’s outspoken support of marriage equality and gay rights? ‘Smurfs’ Cast Imagines Navigating NYC — In Miniature

‘I’ve always been fascinated by what really goes on in the subways,’ Neil Patrick Harris tells MTV News of what he’d do first. By Jocelyn Vena “The Smurfs (In 3-D)” Photo: Sony Pictures “The Smurfs” are three apples high, as the legend goes, and in this week’s big-screen adaptation of the beloved children’s cartoon, Hollywood takes a stab at re-telling the tale for a new generation of kids. The 3-D tale (with some CGI) is voiced by an A-list cast, including VMA-nominated Katy Perry , George Lopez and Alan Cumming, to name a few. In the movie, the Smurfs land in the Big Apple, where they end up staying with expecting newlyweds played by Neil Patrick Harris and “Glee” star Jayma Mays. Of course, they’re also trying to stay as far as possible from their nemesis, Gargamel, played by Hank Azaria. The little creatures find themselves in some silly situations as they try to navigate the big city. When MTV News caught up with Harris, Mays and Azaria in New York, we asked what they would do if they suddenly found themselves having to survive the city in Smurf-sized bodies.’ “I’ve always been fascinated by what really goes on in the subways,” Harris said. His onscreen lady love, Mays, agreed, “That’s a good one,” before warning him, “but then the rats would be bigger than you. So that’d be a little scary.” “Maybe I’d sneak into really fun buildings,” Mays added. “I would get into clubs that won’t let me in now.” Harris later quipped of a popular Broadway show, “You could sneak into the ‘Book of Mormon.’ That’s a hard ticket to get right now.” The actor who plays the movie’s bumbling bad guy had a less glitzy answer. “If I were three apples high and I lived in New York, I would sneak into the Mets game. That’s what I’d do,” Azaria said. “And I’m blue, so they’d probably just mistake me for some kind of mascot. I’d wear orange to go with it. You see Gutsy’s beard there? It’s orange; that’s Mets colors right there. I’m sure Gutsy is a Mets fan.” Are you going to check out “The Smurfs” this weekend? Tell us in the comments! Pitbull, Marc Anthony Brave Heat In ‘Rain Over Me’ Video

Miami MC joined by Salsa crooner in sexy new clip for Pit’s summer-ready jam. By Jocelyn Vena Pitbull and Marc Anthony in ‘Rain Over Me’ Photo: PoloGrounds It’s a good time to be Pitbull . When he’s not throwing parties with Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer in his “Give Me Everything” video, Pit is busy helping Marc Anthony find his groove in the sexy, sleek new “Rain Over Me” video. The single “Rain Over Me” is off the rapper’s Planet Pit album, which dropped earlier this summer. In the clip, VMA-nominated Pitbull and newly separated Marc Anthony take the party to the only place where it doesn’t rain — the desert. So, sure it doesn’t rain in the desert, but well-tailored suits and pretty ladies (and some product placement) are aplenty in the barren setting. While the guys hang outside in the sweltering heat amid a shack-style location, a group of ladies swim around in a pool elsewhere trying to keep cool as the song’s hot beats play in the background. The conclusion seems to be that if you party hard enough in the desert — and look cool while doing it — you can eventually make it rain. The duo not enjoy the company of beautiful ladies, they eventually find themselves drenched. And there’s really no better way to cool off after all that time in the sun. “Rain Over Me” is just the latest summer jam from the Miami rapper. He recently spoke to MTV News about what makes the perfect summer tune. “People need to escape from everything that’s going on. And … if they’re going to spend the last $20 they made — and they only made $50 for the week — they want to spend it having a good time, not running into drama,” he said. “So I’m more than blessed to be a part of this summer and the great music out there.” And “Rain Over Me” isn’t the first time Pitbull has collaborated with someone in the former Lopez-Anthony household. Earlier this year, he found chart success with J.Lo on her equally club-ready hit “On the Floor.” What do you think of Pit and Marc Anthony’s video? Tell us in the comments! Taylor Swift Is ‘Totally Cool,’ Tour Openers NeedToBreathe Say

South Carolina rock band tells MTV News Swift is ‘very pro for somebody who’s 21.’ By Jocelyn Vena NeedToBreathe Photo: Marc Broussely/ Redferns Even at the tender age of 21, Taylor Swift is one of the most poised superstars on the planet. And she has quite the reputation for being incredibly professional to work with. But when her tour openers NeedToBreathe finally got the chance to meet her, they were actually surprised by how true that is. “Well, she won’t let us look at her [for] long,” Bear Reinhart joked to MTV News. Brother Bo added, “She wears, like, a veil over her face the whole time, like, no eye contact.” Of course, that is anything but true, and Bear later added, “Honestly, it’s been really not like that at all. She was totally cool the first day … very pro for somebody who’s 21.” Bo continued, “[She's] very down to earth and easy [to work with].” As the story goes, Swift handpicked the South Carolina band to be the opening act on her Speak Now tour , which is currently hitting up the country. And the band finds it hard to believe that they are playing to a sea of screaming teenage girls in arenas and stadiums night after night. “We thought when people called us, we thought they were joking,” Bear said of learning they’d be opening for the comely singer. “I think partly because it’s Taylor Swift and partly because we’re not really a country band and her fans are obviously a little younger than ours sometimes. But it’s been cool because she genuinely likes music and she likes our band and she’s been really sweet about the whole thing. “We met her and she was kind of nervous around us,” he continued. “I guess [because] we’re older than her, but she’s like a real fan. She’s like, ‘What songs are you gonna play?’ So that’s good, to be appreciated on a tour like that. Obviously, we could, like, never see her again, but she’s been great.” Related Artists Taylor Swift needtobreathe

Soul Khan Just Wants Your Acknowledgement

MC opens up about his EP, getting love in NYC and why a white rapper with a booming voice shouldn’t shock you. By Steven Roberts New York MC Soul Khan Photo: Soul Khan Fire Starter: Soul Khan Every MC can rap. Certainly some better than others, but for the most part, anyone calling themselves a rapper can rhyme words to tell a tale in their own unique way. But every once in a while, an MC comes along who’s blessed with a booming voice that commands attention. Soul Khan’s voice is probably his most distinguishing feature, which is not to take anything away from the former battle rapper’s skills, but his deep delivery catches your ear. “I wish I could say I had something to do with it, but that’s all nature,” Khan joked to Mixtape Daily. “I decided I wanted to make rap a career after I graduated college,” Khan continued. “I mean, with a voice like mine, you could either go into politics, [be] a voice for ‘Final Fantasy’ characters or you could be a rapper,” he laughed. A native of Los Angeles’ West Valley, Khan said he was initially “kind of annoyed” that people were frequently surprised to discover that he was the one spitting after hearing his music. In 2011, a white rapper shouldn’t shock people, he thought. “I’ve been rapping for, I guess now, 14 years,” Khan said. “For a good amount of time, I wasn’t very good at it — as I think most people [are not] when they start something. Eventually, [I] developed into a serviceable artist, and I just started rapping because it seemed like the most viable and vital means of communicating with listeners.” Although his style may scream Brooklyn, the L.A. rapper came to New York because he needed a challenge, and the city has embraced him wholeheartedly. “It’s tough to impress people, and if you’re willing to go that extra mile, if you’re willing to give credit to [New Yorkers'] cynicism and say, ‘I’m willing to overpower that,’ then when you do, you get love on a scale you couldn’t imagine. If you win over a New York crowd, you’re the best.” Khan’s ready now to take on the rest of the world with the release of his Acknowledgment EP, one of three that he hopes to release this summer in the lead-up to his album, Soul Like Khan. The Acknowledgement EP was produced by DJ Element (who is also Khan’s stage DJ), and the rapper described Element’s production style as far more lively and uptempo than what he’s used to. And that contrast motivated Khan to try something different. “I made four songs that generally consider the subject of self-worth in some way, whether it was explicitly stated or just the mood, theme,” Khan said. “I don’t want to say motivation music, ’cause now the word ‘motivation’ is actually a hip-hop clich

‘Friends With Benefits’ Sex Scenes ‘Required’ Awkwardness

‘We were going for laughs, and that breaks the ice a little bit,’ Justin Timberlake tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Justin Timberlake as Dylan and Mila Kunis as Jamie in “Friends With Benefits” Photo: Glen Wilson/ Sony Pictures One might think having to get it on with Mila Kunis or Justin Timberlake for a big-screen comedy would be easy. But the “Friends With Benefits” stars insist that there aren’t too many benefits to having to get busy with so many eyes on you — unless you’re in on the joke, that is. “These were, in fact, less awkward, because we were required to make them awkward as the characters,” Timberlake told MTV News, with onscreen bestie Kunis by his side. “We were going for laughs, and that breaks the ice a little bit, so you don’t feel like you’re having to portray something a certain way.” “Friends With Benefits” opens Friday and revolves around Kunis’ and Timberlake’s characters trying to mix friendship and sex without letting their emotions get in the way. It also features an all-star cast with names like Patricia Clarkson, Woody Harrelson, Andy Samberg, Bryan Greenberg and Emma Stone adding their opinions and insights to the potentially fatal friendship idea. As explained by the twosome, the goofier Timberlake acted about the whole thing, the easier it was for the real-life friends to pretend to get busy with each other. “I basically just jumped around a lot and made Mila laugh as much as I could,” he said. Timberlake even used his skills as a musician to make a potentially uncomfortable scenario less so. “We made up some songs together, mostly about [director] Will [Gluck],” he said. So how did Gluck feel about those ditties? Well, he didn’t really get the chance to hear them because, as Kunis shared, they performed them “behind his back” and she had no plans to perform them again since they are a bit NSFW. “They can be re-performed, but not on MTV,” Timberlake chimed in. Justin Bieber, Chris Brown Spotted In Studio Together

Pair has previously worked on two tracks together, ‘Up’ and ‘Next to You.’ By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber and Chris Brown Photo: Getty/WireImage Pals Justin Bieber and Chris Brown were spotted heading into a studio together on Monday. According to Rap-Up.com , the singers met up at the Record Plant in Hollywood. “Studio. #NEWMUSIC,” Bieber tweeted early Tuesday morning, leading us to believe the session was for his next album. Previously Bieber told MTV News that he wanted to focus less on features for his next album, but given the fact that Brown recently wrote a track for Joe Jonas , it’s possible he may have just been assisting with some writing. The rumored session marks the latest collaboration for the pair, who have appeared on two tracks together in the past. First, they remixed Bieber’s slow jam “Up,” then Bieber jumped on Brown’s ballad “Next to You.” Bieber’s producer, Danja, told Rap-Up.com that he’s aiming for an “edgier” sound for the 17-year-old’s next release. “What I’m creating for him I think is definitely a more mature sound. That’s where he’s headed now,” he explained. Earlier this year, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, revealed some other names the pop star hopes to get into the studio with, including Drake, a collaboration Bieber hinted at last year. Bieber is also reportedly working with Kanye West. “Him and Kanye [West] had a call today about a song they’re trying to work on together,” Braun said. “Kanye wants to produce a bunch of songs for the new album.” Related Artists Chris Brown Justin Bieber

Demi Lovato Finds Strength On ‘Skyscraper’

‘All my windows still are broken but I’m standing on my feet,’ the star sings on new track. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Demi Lovato’s new single “Skyscraper” is finally here. The empowering ballad about finding strength in the wake of a waning relationship dropped on Tuesday (July 12). A piano plays as Demi sings, “Sky’s are crying, I am watching catching teardrops in my hands/ Only silence, as it’s ending, like we never had a chance.” By the second verse, an empowered Lovato begins to find more strength. As a beat kicks in, she sings, “As the smoke clears/ I awaken and untangle you from me/ Would it make you feel better to watch me while I bleed?/ All my windows still are broken but I’m standing on my feet.” And on the chorus, she proclaims, “You can take everything I have/ You can break everything I am/ Like I’m made of glass, like I’m made of paper/ Go on and try and tear me down/ I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper.” The song closes out with Demi proudly belting out that chorus. In a teaser for the video , directed by Mark Pellington and dropping this week, Demi is seen standing alone in the desert. She looks straight into the camera before the clip fades out. “This song is so special to me because it’s inspired by my journey and the struggles that I’ve dealt with this past year,” she told Seventeen.com . “I hope people are able to relate to it and realize that they are able to rise above and overcome any obstacle, no matter the circumstances, and shine like a skyscraper. I am still on a personal journey dealing with my own issues each and every day, but the best advice I can give to anyone going through a rough patch is to never be afraid to ask for help.” The song was written by Toby Gad and will be her first big release since leaving treatment earlier this year. “Recording this song was such an amazing experience for me. It was such an incredible and emotional process, and I couldn’t have asked for a better producer to work with than Toby Gad,” she said. “Toby is one of the sweetest people I know and I am so proud of the work we did together. My biggest wish for this song is that it’s able to inspire others and urge them to keep moving forward no matter what the odds.” What do you think of Demi’s new single? Tell us in the comments.
