Retired St. Louis Cop: White Officers View Black People As “Something To Practice On To Get Their Skills Straight”

Retired Cop Says White Officers See Black People As Something To Practice On As police officers across the country continue to show little to no regard for black lives , one retired St. Louis police officer sat down with the Atlanta Blackstar to shed some light on the ugly truth behind the badge for many of his white former-peers. via Atlanta Blackstar It was frustration with the racism he felt from the police officers who frequently pulled him over in his late-model vehicle that compelled Glenn Rogers to become a police officer in the St. Louis area 25 years ago. And it is still racism in the police force that is pushing Rogers to speak out now in anger and frustration, seven years after his retirement. Rogers, 64, is a former police officer and undercover detective for several municipalities in St. Louis County and was a police chief for a short time in southwestern Illinois and a police chaplain in three different departments. He has watched the events transpiring in Ferguson with the unique perspective of someone who understands what it’s like on both sides of the badge. From the first days after he joined the police force of a town in St. Louis County in 1990—a place that, like Ferguson, had an overwhelmingly white police department in a majority Black town—Rogers was stunned by the obvious contempt his white colleagues had for the Black citizens they were paid to serve and protect. “As I began to see how Black people got talked to, treated, grabbed, arrested, how they got dealt with when being incarcerated, to me it looked like something off a slave boat when you actually saw the booking process and the handcuffing process,” Rogers, 64, told Atlanta Blackstar in an exclusive interview. “It was just a long lineup of Black people. I don’t think in the first year I saw more than one or two white people arrested. And those were usually for failure to appear for tickets.” Rogers also went on to describe the mentality that he observed first-hand for of many of his white counterparts during his time as an officer. Over the next few years, Rogers said he could not believe how much heartlessness and hostility white officers brought into encounters with Black people. Rogers calls this the “human element”—the part of the job where officers get to use their discretion in deciding how to respond to any given situation. These are the situations where Black people often met danger. “The human element has got to be put in check,” said Rogers, who has served as a police advisor to six different mayors in the St. Louis area. “There is an area of discretion involved in every job and the same with law enforcement. The human element has to decipher and make a decision when it’s not clearcut by law or by what is apparent before you. When they say cops have split seconds to make decisions, it is not a lie. The main goal of a police officer—as I told the new officers I trained—is to go home at night. You can’t trust anybody on the street because you don’t know what they’re going to do. But with that, you also have an obligation to be humane, to only use what is necessary to accomplish your job and go home at night. I found that many times white officers do things knowing that Black people don’t stick together, knowing you can always do something to a Black person and 95 percent of the time you will come out unscathed and it will go away and you can continue as usual.” Former officer Rogers later made a disturbing revelation about many white officers viewing black people as good to “practice on” to perfect their skillset because blacks often don’t stick together and don’t know the law. Rogers said the white officers knew Black people weren’t likely to know how the system worked, or to understand their rights, so it was easy to make them run afoul of the law. “They saw Black people in my opinion as the people you could practice on and get your skills straight,” he said. “They were the people who didn’t know how to deal with the system, so therefore they would make all the mistakes that needed to be made for officers to do to them the things they do to people who make those mistakes. This is why I saw it is intentional that the public is never taught the real mechanics of the law. If you do so, you will eliminate hundreds of thousands if not millions of incidents where they encounter the police or are candidates for arrest. This is both enlightening and disturbing all at once. You can read the full details on what former officer Rogers had to say HERE and trust us, it’s definitely worth a read.

Celebrity Cribs: Can You Guess Which Grown Up Boy Bander Lived In This $3.6 Million Hollyweird Home? [Photos]

Ex Boy Band Member Selling “Handsome” $3.6 Million L.A. Home Via Realtor (This) pop singer who makes teenage girls swoon and scream with delight, now hopes to win a buyer’s heart with his Los Angeles home perched above the Sunset Strip. The listing agent is Richard Klug, and Jonas is asking for $3.6 million. He bought the house in 2013 for $3.2 million. Everyone’s impressed with the stunning SoCal home. Curbed LA calls it “handsome,” and RumorFix said (the multi-sibling singer) has “amazing taste.” The 3,175-square-foot house sits on a 7,070-square-foot lot in a cul-de-sac that’s on a high point of land and overlooks the Sunset Strip. According to Design & Trend, “The property features impeccable views of the Hollywood Hills and is surrounded by lush landscaping and a zen pool.” The house has a lovely rustic feel to it, with wood floors throughout, a wood-beam ceiling in the living room, and a wood-plank ceiling in the library. Because the property is covered in trees, it feels very secluded. Variety‘s eagle eyes point out that the kitchen hasn’t changed much since Jonas bought the property. He “kept the steely blue Shaker-style cabinetry, the marble counter tops, the high-grade stainless steel appliances and—somewhat curiously—a massive, antique-looking postmaster’s desk.” Many media outlets are speculating that (he) is selling the house because he’s ready to settle down with former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, and that the two are looking for a more family-friendly home. Any idea who he is? Flip the page to see more of the house and find out for sure. Images via Realtor

Kanye West to Press Charges Against Trespassing Paparazzo

The legal shoe will soon be on the other foot when it comes to Kanye West’s ever-lasting feud with the paparazzi. Hours after footage surfaced of the rapper going ballistic because a reporter approached him at 4 a.m. today and asked how he was doing, sources that West will be pressing charges against the unnamed individual for trespassing on his property. He’s filed a police report and everything. The following video does make it clear that the man confronts Kanye right in front of the artist’s Hollywood Hills residence: Kanye West Goes OFF on Paparazzo Kanye, of course, is typically the one on the receiving end of legal action after a run-in with the press. He’s been charged with battery and grand theft after a July confrontation, but has pleaded self-defense in recently-released court documents. So it looks like Kanye has at least learned his lesson to some extent, as he refrained from getting physical in this latest showdown. In other angry Kanye West news, have you read about his Twitter war against Jimmy Kimmel ? It’s rather awesome.

And another one….SMH Tyga Sued By Another Woman For Sexual Assault On Music Video Set According to TMZ reports : Tyga’s “Make It Nasty” video is biting him in the a$$ again — a fourth woman is now suing … claiming she was lied to about nekkidness in the video, and sexually attacked by a rabbit … and we don’t mean the pleasure toy. The woman, Allison Brown, is suing Tyga and his record label … Young Money Entertainment — claiming she was approached in November, 2011 by a man who said he was tight with Tyga, and she had a “good look” for his music video. In the suit, Brown claims she showed up for the shoot at a Hollywood Hills mansion where producers proceeded to ply her with booze — even though she was only 20-years-old at the time. She alleges no one ever asked for ID. This is when things took a nasty turn, according to the suit. Brown claims someone in a yellow rabbit costume grabbed her from behind her hips and started dry humping her — and when she pulled away from the rabbit … another man on set grabbed her tidday. Allison also echoed the complaints of 3 other women who were told their nippies would be edited out in the final cut of the video. Probably easier to just use adult stars in your next freak flick “music video”, sir. Continue reading

Steve Carell to Reprise Michael Scott For The Office Series Finale

Steve Carell is bringing back Michael Scott, if only for one night. Having left at the end of Season 7 more than two years ago, the beloved actor will return to The Office for the series’ May 16 finale, according to reports. Just last week, creator Greg Daniels sought to quell talk of a Carell cameo, saying he did not want to overshadow the ending for the rest of the characters. Reading between the lines, that meant Michael Scott’s return would only be a small part of the series’ much-anticipated swan song, not the focal point. Reliable sources say he will return a week from Thursday, and this weekend, Carell surprised thousands of Office fans at a wrap party in Scranton, Pa. In related news, that was the same function in the sitcom’s real-life setting that longtime co-star Rainn Wilson ripped US Airways for making him late to. And in other (potential) Carell news, we think he’d be a good choice to star as the lead in the recently-announced Mister Rogers movie . Don’t you? In any case, are you excited for The Office series finale? How should the show handle his return, if at all? Hit the comments below to discuss!
