‘Skins’ Stars Say Despite Kissing Tony, Tea Still A Lesbian

Sofia Black-D’Elia and James Newman talk about characters’ attraction. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Adam Murphy Sofia Black D’Elia (Tea) Photo: Jason Nacito On Monday night’s episode of “Skins,” Tea made it abundantly clear that she’s a lesbian. Even though she kissed a certain male friend in her clique, the make-out session only proved to her what she already knew. Sofia Black-D’Elia , who plays Tea, and James Newman, who plays Tony (the center of Tea’s affections for a hot minute), told MTV News the kiss wasn’t a case of the show backing out on the lesbian plotline. “They’re kind of brought together by this attraction, and I don’t think it’s necessarily a sexual attraction,” Newman explained. “I think it’s a situation where you have these two people who are very bored, with no one in their lives that really gets them, and on that level, it’s like a perfect attraction. “But on another level, it’s a disaster because Tea’s a lesbian. It’s not a situation where it’s like she’s a lesbian and then she finds a guy and is like, ‘I’m not a lesbian anymore.’ She really is a lesbian, and so for her it doesn’t work, and for Tony, that in and of itself tortures him.” The kiss not only teaches the characters a lot about themselves, but also shows viewers the multiple sides each of these characters possess. “Tony is the manipulator; he’s the ringleader. By episode two, his vulnerabilities start to show, which is really interesting to think because it’s the other side of Tony that was missing for me,” Black-D’Elia explained. “Why should you care about this guy? He’s an ass. I think as soon as episode two is over, you kind of have this very strong love for him. He’s got more of a heart going on than he’d like to put out.” Don’t miss “Skins,” airing Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Related Photos Skins | Cast Photos | Tony Skins | Cast Photos | Tea

Taylor Swift’s ‘Back To December’ Video Director Explains Clip

‘I wanted [Taylor] to perform a very natural way, to make her look very European,’ says Yoann Lemoine. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift in “Back to December” Photo: Big Machine Records In her video for “Back to December,” Taylor Swift finds herself and her home covered in snow while she contemplates the best way to apologize to her former beau, played by model Guntars Asmanis , for breaking his heart. Director Yoann Lemoine tells MTV News that he had a certain aesthetic he wanted to capture for the chilly clip, which was shot partly in Nashville (for Swift’s scenes) and Upstate New York (for Asmanis’ scenes) in December. “I wanted the video to be very simple and metaphorical at the same time,” the Frenchman explained. “I wanted to work on the coldness of feelings in a very visual way, playing with the snow, the distance and sadness. [Taylor] really liked it. The winter theme was very interesting to me — the snow, the ice. I even wanted the guy to go swim in frozen lakes at some point. It was not possible, but I wanted to translate how you feel sometime when your heart is broken. The snow in the apartment is supposed to show how connected she is to him. He is outside, in the cold, but somehow she is connected to him.” Swift pretty much let Lemoine have control over the clip’s look and feel, although it was her idea to have her character leave the letter for her beloved. As for Swift’s look in the video, Lemoine says he was focused on making sure that it all felt real and that she came off as accessible. “I have been going through a lot of videos and pictures of her on the Internet trying to find the best angle and style for her. I wanted people to feel like they would get to know her very intimately, and really trust in what she was saying,” he explained. “I wanted her to perform a very natural way, to make her look very European. This was the main challenge to me. All of Taylor’s world is very far away from my culture, but I saw something in her that could be very rough and heartbreaking; far from the princess glittery outfits and glam that she often goes for.” As for Asmanis, the duo agreed that he was the perfect fit for the part. “I wanted a boy that was fragile and beautiful. I didn’t want to go for a hunk or a perfect cheesy boy that would have killed the sincerity of the video,” Lemoine said. “I just imagined a face that would enhance the fragility of the video. We did cast a couple of boys and both Taylor and I loved Guntars.” Related Artists Taylor Swift

‘Skins’ Stars’ Parents Are ‘Cool’ With Show’s Racy Material

‘She understands the heart of the show,’ Ron Mustafaa says of his mom’s reaction to the show. By Jocelyn Vena Skins” cast member Camille Cresencia-Mills Photo: MTV News Given all the sex and drugs on “Skins,” which premiered Monday night on MTV, one might think that its young stars would have a lot of explaining to do with their parents. While it all takes place in the fictional realm of the show, one of the show’s actors admits that it has lead to some awkward talks with his mom. “My mom is like really cool, but she’s, like, really Indian,” Ron Mustafaa, who plays Abbud, laughed to MTV News about the show’s racy subject matter. “She’s not really accustomed to a lot of the crazy stuff on American television. She’s really cool with it because she understands the heart of the show … growing up and finding out who you are, but at times I have some weird convos with my mom about filming certain sequences … [but] it’s all tastefully done.” Some “Skins” cast said they watched the U.K. version with their parents, so the show’s themes were nothing new. “For the most part, our parents are really just proud of us,” Sofia Black-D’Elia (Tea) said. “So, maybe we do some crazy things on the show, maybe they’re going to watch us take lots of fake drugs, but at the end of the day, they’re also seeing us work our butts off, and do everything that we really wanted to do with this career. So far, my parents are personally so proud of me.” After seeing British “Skins” stars like Dev Patel and Nicholas Hoult go on to bigger things after the show, is the new cast ready for fame and fortune? “I think it’s one of those things where they had success afterwards because of their talents and because of what they were able to do,” James Newman (Tony) said of the U.K. version’s stars. “I don’t think it has that much to do with us in that we’re trying to play our roles. Whatever happens after that has to do with us. We’re all so excited about this show we’re not really thinking about what’s coming afterwards.” “I was just gonna say were trying to just concentrate on sleeping and getting some rest,” D’Elia added. “I’m proud of all of us after everything we’ve accomplished, and I think the aftermath doesn’t worry us right now. … Right now, more than anything, we’re excited to see the show.” Watch “Skins” on Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
