Not Just Ahmed: Black Teen Kiera Wilmot Was Arrested When Her Volcano Was Mistaken For A Bomb

Kiera Wilmot Was Arrested When Her Volcano Was Mistaken For A Bomb Before the infamous photo of high school student Ahmed Mohamed in handcuffs was viewed across the country, another teenager, Kiera Wilmot, was arrested for almost the same thing just 2 years ago! Via WTSP : Last week, officers arrested the 14-year-old at his Texas school after showing up with a homemade clock, mistaken as a fake bomb. “Before, I was really scared that no one was going to care about me because I’m Muslim and now everyone wants to interview me because of what happened,” Mohamed said. What followed was outrage and support, even an invitation to the White House. The charges were dropped once it was figured out the suspicious device is a clock. While it’s a unique case, look no further than our area and you’ll find it’s happened before. “I was thinking how could this happen again?” said Kiera Wilmot. Wilmot, now 19, was a 16-year-old student at Bartow High school in Polk County. Back in 2013, she was arrested after showing off her volcano science project, mistaken as a bomb. “No rights read to me, [I was] taken in a police car from school to a juvenile assessment center,” she said. But, just like Mohamed the community came out to her defense. “I think what they did was amazing. How he had all the support behind him and what took my charges to be dropped within a month, took him only a week.” The school district in Texas, however, stands by their decision. “It’s a little bit disappointing that there are so many comments on social media from people who I don’t think have the complete story and we have an obligation to protect all 2800 students here at MacArthur,” said Lesley Weaver, spokesperson for the Irving School District. Kiera is now a mechanical engineering major at Florida Polytechnic University and hopes to meet Mohamed one day!

Westboro Baptist Church to Protest NBA Playoff Games, Claims #GodH8sTheNBA

The Westboro Baptist Church, in response to Jason Collins coming out as gay this week, says it plans to protest a couple of NBA Playoff games. Because, apparently, God hates the NBA. Or #GodH8sTheNBA in Twitter parlance. The WBC concludes this, of course, because they really do not like homosexuality, and Collins just became the first openly gay player in major U.S. team sports. Therefore, they will picket Wednesday’s Game 5 between Oklahoma City and Houston, and tomorrow night’s Game 6 between Chicago and Brooklyn. Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant, for his part, said of Collins’ announcement: “If he’s happy, that’s cool with me. Seems like a great guy … I support him.” The Big Man Upstairs, according to the Westboro Baptist Church, takes a very different view and will make His presence known this evening at the game. Perhaps He, not Patrick Beverley, is responsible for Russell Westbrook’s injury . Think about that. Then please, for the love of all things good in this world, go discuss, Share, Tweet, and email this story to everyone you know. We just need to make sure Anonymous gets wind of it.

Florida Teen Charged with Weapon-Related Felonies Due to Science Project Mishap

Kiera Wilmot, a 16-year old at Bartow High School in Florida, was expelled from school this week and now faces two felony charges after her what classmates have labeled a “science project gone bad.” According to WTSP, Wilmot was mixing household chemicals in an eight-ounce water bottle Monday morning when the bottle’s top flew off and a mini explosion occurred. No one was hurt the blast. But the police soon arrived and charged the teenager with possession/discharge of a weapon on school grounds and discharging a destructive device. She was actually handcuffed and taken to a juvenile assessment center. Wilmot’s teacher says she never assigned her student this experiment, though principal Ron Pritchard is standing up for Wilmot. “She wanted to see what would happen [when the chemicals mixed] and was shocked by what it did,” he said, adding: “Honestly, I don’t think she meant to ever hurt anyone.” Still, the school district said it was forced to uphold its “code of conduct” and Kiera must now complete her diploma through an expulsion program.
