For Discussion: Spelman College Considers Allowing Transwomen To Enroll

Spelman College May Allow Transgender Students Spelman College, a prestigious HBCU located in Atlanta, GA, is considering shaking up tradition in a major way in the near future. The all-womens’ institution has called together a task force to evaluate the pros, cons, and assess the need for allowing transgender women to enroll in the University. Naturally, we assume this would mean that the students would also be permitted to stay on campus in the all-womens’ dormitories, use the womens’ restroom facilities, locker rooms, etc. as well. Via AJC : Spelman College’s president is convening a task force to provide recommendations on whether the all-women’s, historically black college will admit transgender students. President Mary Schmidt Campbell included the information in a welcome back letter to the campus community on Thursday and posted on the private school’s website. Spelman is the latest prestigious women’s college to consider admitting transgender students. Other institutions, including Barnard College in New York City and the other members of The Seven Sisters association of historical woman’s institutions in the northeast have already enacted policies admitting those students. Of course…a lot of people have A LOT of thoughts about this one — just check social media. Spelman’s all-male “brother school” Morehouse College has already had it’s own controversy with setting dress codes for “cross-dressers” years ago, and it’s doubtful that transwomen would be admitted or at all well-received at that institution…so this seems like an attempt at a solution for students looking to study peacefully among the gender they identify with at the AUC. Congratulations to Rima! There are news reports on Monday however, that Rima is also a champion pole dancer. Photos of Rima competing in the “Stripper 101″ contest in 2007 have surfaced and there are reports that organizers are looking into the matter. Really? The Miss USA Pageant caused its own controversy when contestants posed in sexy photos before the start of the competition. Photos of the contestants were taken in fishnets, lacy lingerie, showed a lot of cleavage and bare skin, with most posing on a bed or couch for their photo ops.
