Mac Miller Speaks His Mind On Macadelic

‘I’m not gonna act like I’m a superhero,’ Mac tells MTV News of his persona on upcoming mixtape. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sam Hendrick Mac Miller Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/Redferns Mac Miller sure knows how to have a good time. On his 2010 breakout mixtape K.I.D.S., the then-teenage MC promoted party and B.S., and has continued to do so on hyped-up follow-up singles like “Donald Trump” and “Party on Fifth Ave.” With his mixtape Macadelic, due Friday, the Woodie of the Year winner is looking to switch things up. “It’s a lot different from anything I’ve ever done,” he told MTV News of the mixtape backstage at the mtvU Woodies . “In my past projects, I always thought about them a lot, like, ‘Where are the party jams? Where are the jams that are fun?’ ” This time out, Mac took a different creative approach with Macadelic. “I was trying to make a complete project, but on this project, all I wanted to do is just say what was on my mind,” he said. “I just worried about saying what I wanted to say, and I felt like there were a lot of things that I wanted to get off my chest, and this mixtape was the way to do it.” One thing Miller wanted to address were the critics who painted him as a frat-boy rapper only concerned about partying, doing drugs and bedding women. “I didn’t have the best reviews on a lot of things, and I speak on that,” he said. “I talk about that. I’m not gonna act like I’m a superhero and sh– doesn’t bother me — of course it bothers me, so I spoke on it.” Cam’ron and Sir Michael Rocks appear on the tape, as well as a big-time feature Miller chose to keep secret for now. “I can’t say who it is,” he teased. “But it’s just wild, wild.” Who do you think is Mac’s surprise Macadelic feature? Mac Miller Shows His ‘Soul’ In New Video

After fun videos like ‘Frick Park Market’ and ‘Party on Fifth Ave.,’ Miller gets serious in ‘Of the Soul.’ By Rob Markman Mac Miller in his video for “Of the Soul” Photo: Rostrum Records After partying on Fifth Ave., Mac Miller decided to slow things down for the fourth video from his #1 debut, Blue Slide Park. With the Ian Wolfson-directed “Of the Soul” clip, Miller simplifies his visual, electing to shoot against a brick wall with BSP -themed art painted on it. In previous Blue Slide videos like “Frick Park Market,” “Smile Back” and “Party on Fifth Ave.,” the Pittsburgh rap breakout dressed up in costume, put his acting skills on display and danced, but in his latest, he just sort of stands there — and raps. It’s all fitting, of course, when you consider the mellowed-out sound bed that production team I.D. Labs laid on “Of the Soul.” It was early Thursday morning (January 5) when Mac tweeted the YouTube link for the video, which has clocked in more than 65,000 views in about 16 hours. “Don’t even know what’s in my head anymore, though,” the 19-year old MC starts off spitting, looking into the camera wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. There isn’t much to it — just Mac, a couple of outfit changes and three dancing beauties who blend a bit of ballet with hip-hop steps. The simplicity only enhances Miller’s bars, which ultimately deal with his growth from a regular kid to rap’s newest phenom. “Some expect me to be the greatest ever/ Hear me on the radio, sh– will change forever/ Now I’m just a pop sensation, f— ya expectations/ I’mma be the best, have some patience/ You thought that it was great then poof/ It was nothin’ but some d

Mac Miller Brings ‘Party’ To ‘NYE In NYC 2012’

During Saturday night’s live MTV special, MC re-creates ’80s -inspired ‘Party on Fifth Ave’ video. By James Dinh Mac Miller (file) Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — Underground-turned-chart topping MC Mac Miller was treated quite nicely by 2011, and he ended the year on a high note when he served up a performance of “Party on Fifth Ave” during MTV’s “NYE in NYC 2012” on Saturday night. To re-create the tune’s ’80s-inspired clip, Miller arrived on set with high energy and never ceased his interaction with the audience. Dressed in a vintage jacket, tuxedo shirt and backward cap, the Pittsburgh rapper bounced alongside his crew of appropriately dressed friends and dancers in front of the audience as he spit the DJ Mark the 45 King-sampling tune. “There’s a party on Fifth Ave., hit me if you try’n a go/ I can be there in like 20/ I’mma honk it and come runnin’, ’cause we gotta hit the road/ Make you sure you got a clean shirt, clean pants, new shoes/ Or just hitch a ride there, you choose,” he rapped in front of the jumping crowd. MTV News spoke with the MC backstage during the event, where he shared his thoughts on the big night. “It’s funny because, in the moment, it just feels like another day at work,” the MC told us. “This is what I do for a living. But then, in actuality, stepping back and thinking about it, performing live on MTV for the News Year’s Eve with millions of people watching is pretty crazy.” Asked why he chose to recreate the clip, Miller explained, “I just think it’s a funny video, and I wanted to do something more than just stand up there and rap or something. We wanted to do something funky, and I wanted to keep all my homeys involved — get their faces on national TV.” Mac wasn’t the only performer to rock out until 2012 as Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, J. Cole and Jason Der
