L ess than a week after the 2018 midterm elections, a Black man who was paralyzed in a 2012 police shooting wants to campaign for office in 2019. The 25-year-old candidate, who was surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, vowed to amplify the voices of Black people and the youth in his community if elected. “I think that from the response alone, you see people excited in a way they’ve never really been excited for a city council race in a very long time, from elders to the youth,” said Ford. In 2019, gubernatorial races will headline down-ballot elections in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Several state, local legislatures, and mayoral races are also on tap. Ford entered the spotlight in Pittsburgh in a disturbing case of alleged police excessive force . Pittsburgh Police Officer David Derbish shot him five times during a November 2012 traffic stop and a second officer was accused of assaulting him. A lengthy federal trial in 2017 ended with a jury in deadlocked on Derbish’s liability. After a second trial was scheduled to get underway, Pittsburgh settled the case for $5.5 million in January 2018. “We are very happy for Leon and his family to have closure so he can move forward and be the great and successful man he is destined to be,” a statement from Ford’s lawyer said following the settlement. Ford is indeed moving forward with his life. He’s competing as a Democrat, and he has the May 21 primary circled on his calendar. She is running for governor of Georgia on a campaign to expand Medicaid, enact sensible gun laws, protect public schools from privatization and much more. Her opponent, Brian Kemp  — Georgia’s secretary of state who oversees elections — wants to make healthcare less accessible, repress the right to vote and give people even more access to guns, including the AR-15 automatic weapon used in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre. In addition, Kemp has been accused countless times of voter suppression and even former President Jimmy Carter called on Kemp to resign as secretary of state . But now, because Abrams was slightly ahead in the polls, Trump was directing his nonstop lies at her. Abrams co-founded NOW Account, which is a financial services firm that helps small businesses grow, helping to create jobs in Georgia. In addition, according to her campaign page , “Stacey became the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly and the first African American to lead in the House of Representatives.” Abrams is not only qualified to be Governor, she is also even more qualified to be president than our current divider in chief. This act of terror follows a week of nationwide panic as 14 pipe bombs were mailed to Democratic detractors of Donald Trump. City councilwoman Erika Strassburger has confirmed that the shooter or shooters are still active inside the building where several are reported dead and three police officers are down. The singer posted a short video of the Pittsburgh rapper on Instagram along with a personal message in his tribute.  “i adored you from the day i met you when i was nineteen and i always will. i can’t believe you aren’t here anymore,” begins her caption to the clip. She added, “i can’t believe you aren’t here anymore. i really can’t wrap my head around it. we talked about this. so many times. i’m so mad, i’m so sad i don’t know what to do. you were my dearest friend. for so long. above anything else. i’m so sorry i couldn’t fix or take your pain away. i really wanted to. the kindest, sweetest soul with demons he never deserved. i hope you’re okay now. rest.” Unfortunately, her comments are still closed because trolls will be trolls . He was strong about it—always kept a smile on his face because he wanted you to smile, too.
