Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN Well, Fresh Prince fans, looks like Will Smith is doing more than bringing Bel-Air Academy clothing to your lives – he’s reportedly developing a spin-off to the popular NBC sitcom. The Hollywood Reporter shared info that Smith is overseeing the development of a new Fresh Prince of Bel-Air spinoff series. Even better? Westbrook – the new company overseen by Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith – will be handling production. The original show aired from 1990 to 1996, co-created by Quincy Jones and saw Smith rise as a magnetic personality on TV. Back then, Smith portrayed a fictionalized version of himself alongside the late James Avery (first things first, rest in peace Uncle Phil), Janet Hubert, Alfonso Ribeiro, Tatyana Ali, Karyn Parsons and more. Source: Courtesy / @BlackGirlBeachDay A little positivity! ‘Black Girl Beach Day’ Returns To Historically Black Atlantic City Beach Attention: Black women and girls needing a safe space to lay down your towels and boogie-board in the Tri-State area. After successfully hosting over 300 people of color last summer, #BlackGirlBeachDay is BACK. The event was born from the brilliant minds of Christina Bright and Snap Lancaster . After the friends curated a small beach gathering two years ago Black Women from all over attended the next year, expanding their attendance nearly tenfold. Unfortunately, the ladies ran into some struggles including cops harassing them over ‘loud music’. Now they’re legitimizing the meetup. This year’s event will include security, lifeguards, a carpool and a plethora of activities. Even more impressive, they’re taking their talents to Atlantic City’s historically Black Chicken Bone Beach . This landmark was a HOT SPOT for Black folks in the area which was segregated up until the 1960s… View this post on Instagram After @normablonde_ commented under one of our pics a few months back that we should consider #CHICKENBONEBEACH for our next location …we did our googles and our JAWS DROPPED! As two women who were born and raised in Jersey why didn’t we know that such a rich history was right on the #JerseyShore ?!?? . A QUICK HISTORY LESSON: In the mid 20th century, there was a rising black middle class that wanted to participate in all the recreational activities the city offered. Chicken Bone Beach was a rare haven for families seeking some oceanside relief from the heat and quickly became a HOT SPOT! . . . When Chicken Bone Beach was segregated , many of the nearby restaurants refused to serve black customers. As such, families would have to pack their own picnic lunches. Their leftovers would litter the beach, scattered by animals and the elements. The name Chicken Bone Beach arose from the large amounts of leftover bones found in the sand. With the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, all Atlantic City beaches were open to everyone and this all-black beach disappeared. By the 1970s Casinos further changed the culture of the beach by making Atlantic City into a world class resort which in turn limited access to all working class families. To protect this endangered African American heritage site, the Atlantic City Council passed an ordinance in 1997, declaring Chicken Bone Beach (also known as the Missouri Avenue Beach) into an historical landmark. . . Fast forward , in 2019 @blackgirlbeachday wants to share the rich history and heritage of #CHICKENBONEBEACH with the masses by hosting our 3rd and BIGGEST #blackgirlbeachday here! Tag a friend , share, and let’s continue to remind the world of the legacies our ancestors built !!!! A post shared by Black Girl Beach Day (@blackgirlbeachday) on Jul 26, 2019 at 11:56am PDT Even our boy MLK was on this historic beach! Seems like a dope place to get your beach day on. Source: Apega/WENN.com / WENN Stan Lee Is Getting A Bronx Street Named After Him There’s no question when it comes to the fact that Stan Lee’s legacy will live on forever, but now, there’s even more reason for the legend’s name to stay fresh in all of our minds. The man responsible for the creation of almost all of the comic book characters we know and love is being honored with a street named after him in The Bronx. According to reports from The New York Post , City Council voted on Tuesday to co-name University Avenue between Brandt Place and West 176th Street “Stan Lee Way.” The Marvel icon lived in the area and was also an alum at DeWitt Clinton High School. All there is to do now is to get mayoral sign-off on the proposal for the honor to become official. Stan Lee died in November at the age of 95 and has been highly honored by both fans and actors alike since his passing. At this month’s San Diego Comic-Con, tributes to Lee were all over the place, including a commemorative Stan Lee plush doll that appeared in a bunch of fan photos from the festivities. To honor Stan Lee’s legacy & his history with #SDCC , a one of a kind adorable Little Stan Lee plush will be making appearances at Stan’s old Comic Con stomping grounds. If you see the Little Stan Lee plush at #SDCC , stop & ask for a picture – it might just pop up online! pic.twitter.com/6Wz0m0PL2Y — stan lee (@TheRealStanLee) July 19, 2019 Excelsior!

City Council President Herb Wesson (@HerbJWesson) May 5, 2019 Reports CNN : The City of Los Angeles has renamed a nearly 4-mile stretch of road from “Rodeo Road” to “Obama Boulevard,” in honor of the country’s first African-American president. The location is significant, the city said, because Obama held his first campaign rally in Los Angeles on February 20, 2007, at Rancho Cienega Park. The park sits on Rodeo Road, right across from W. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Rodeo Road goes through a historically Black neighborhood. The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to rename the 3.5 mile stretch of road. P rom season is in full swing, but for many students, the event that is often considered a pinnacle in the high school experience isn’t a reality due to financial setbacks. A Detroit-based boxing gym is paying it forward by providing underserved teenage girls with prom dresses so they won’t have to miss out on that special moment, the Detroit Free Press reported. Detroit boxing champ's gym gives away prom dresses for teenagers https://t.co/rXjTjddboS — Detroit Free Press (@freep) May 5, 2019 The SuperBad Fitness boxing gym—which is owned by professional boxer Tony Harrison —collected over 50 dresses to give away to students in need who are preparing for their upcoming proms and graduations. Those who operate the gym transformed one of the facility’s rooms into a mock boutique where teens have been coming in to choose from a collection of new and gently-used dresses that were donated locally and from individuals across the country. The teens were also able to choose items from a collection of jewelry, handbags, and shoes to complete their looks. Aware of how costly prom can be, Harrison and his team wanted to host the prom dress drive to ease the financial issues that many students in the local community are dealing with. “It lifts a financial burden. We want to help other girls. Prom can cost so much,” said DeArra Henderson , who is leading the community outreach for the initiative. Harrison, who took home the World Boxing Council’s super welterweight title last year, has continually used his gym as an avenue to give back to his community. The gym has a tutoring center that serves nearly 50 kids each day. “He’s like a parent to each and every one of these kids,” his girlfriend Jasmine Bradley , who oversees the gym’s tutoring center, said in a statement . “And that’s why they love him so much. They feel it. They want to be better than him. They want to be like him. He’s probably the most selfless person I know. “We are trying to reach out to the kids in the neighborhood, and try to show them something different than what is being shown on the regular.” SEE ALSO: Teen Becomes St. Thomas High School’s First-Ever Black Valedictorian Philando Castile’s Mother Pays Off Lunch Debt For High School Students In Minnesota [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3851904″ overlay=”true”]

Source: MediaNews Group/Boulder Daily Camera via Getty Images / Getty Protesters March On Boulder Police Dept. Over Detained Black Man Cleaning Yard We just wanna live our life, aye-aye, aye-aye, aye-aye… Last week we reported on an incident in Boulder, Colorado where police pulled their guns and detained Black Naropa University student Zayd Atkinson for…picking up trash off his lawn. Today, we get word via DailyCamera that the March for Boulder Police Oversight took place yesterday in which angry community made demands for more transparency in the department. Protesters posted up in front of the Boulder Police Department and made their voice heard. Nami Thompson, who does public policy for the Colorado Public Health Association and helped organize the march, asked attendees to email Boulder City Council and Police Chief Greg Testa with two requests: remove rifles from all police cars and allow people to submit anonymous complaints to the department. “When you’re young and you think of police, you think of justice,” Thompson said to the crowd in front of the police station. “But with Boulder police, it’s about justification.” Bars. Thompson also called to fix all the “broken” body cameras that never seen to be operating when controversial arrests or physical force is used. In addition to demanding that a civilian oversight committee be formed so that the community can police the police. Darren O’Conner, who is part of the Boulder Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or NAACP, said that police shouldn’t be policing themselves. “Internal affairs is too internal,” O’Conner said, referencing the police department that handles internal investigations into police conduct or complaints. “(…) These are friends overseeing friends.” At this point, police officers simply cannot be trusted to be honest and forthright without some serious Big Brothering.
