Somehow, by the time I met him at the altar, it had miraculously disappeared and we ended up dancing almost all night. Twenty five years later, we’re still having fun, while also doing the hard work to build our partnership and support each other as individuals. Meghan Markle can’t catch a break when it comes to the British press. Time and time again they choose to knock down the Duchess of Sussex, but they should be celebrating her! Especially today… because she just announced something extremely monumental. Maybe to some its no biggie, but trust us — it is! Meghan just made history by not only being the first member of the Royal family to ever guest-edit fashion bible British Vogu e but for being the first person to ever help edit the September issue. The September issue is known for being the most significant due to its fall/winter fashion previews. However, Meghan stayed true to her character and utilized the issue for more than just its fashion-forward conversations and took the chance to discuss something a bit more meaningful, titling the issue “Forces for Change”. And instead of taking the once in a lifetime opportunity to cover the magazine herself, she gave up the spot to 15 “brilliant female changemakers.” She insisted that she didn’t want to be the center of attention, she wanted the spotlight to be on “the women she admires,” explained British Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful. Her only strict request was that photographer Peter Lindbergh not edit out the freckles in the photos, because one of Meghan’s biggest pet peeves is when photographers cover up her freckles. Enninful completely agreed, saying it would allow us to see “beauty in real people, in real situations.” In the issue, the former actress interviewed former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, who shared her motherly advice over chicken tacos, while Prince Harry spoke with chimpanzee and wildlife expert Dr. Jane Goodall. The Duchess spent seven whole months working in secret, as explained on the Duke and Duchess’ official joint Instagram account, to “create an issue of inclusivity and inspiration, focusing on what connects us rather than what divides us.” The collaged cover features 15 women: Women’s rights advocate Salma Hayek Pinault, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, LGBTQIA+ advocate Laverne Cox, youth voting activist Yara Shahidi, and climate activist Greta Thunberg among others. But one spot on the cover was left blank, which was done so that readers could use it as a mirror and reflect their faces onto the cover. How cute is that?! Well, a lot of grumpy people weren’t here for it. One Twitter user wrote, “Why isn’t HM The Queen included on the cover of September’s Vogue, @RoyalFamily?” “Her Majesty is the perfect role model: like many of us she had no choice but to do the job she was given.” Another upset user chimed in with a similar opinion, calling the cover “pathetic.” Others wondered why Meghan didn’t include a doctor, nurse, teacher, lawyer, etc. But the major problem to critics was that she skipped out on meeting with President Donald Trump during his recent visit due to her maternity leave but was willing to devote her time to the magazine and interviews with the former First Lady. Well, yeah. Piers Morgan, of course, had something to say about the Duchess, claiming she is “being about as political as any royal has ever been” and “being a royal means you stay out of politics.” He also took issue with Meghan’s choice of “radical, liberal” Vogue cover stars and how she excluded “the planet’s entire male population.” But despite all of her ( obviously bored) haters, Meghan is her own person and was politically active long before marrying a prince , and if her Vogue collaboration hasn’t proved to you where her personal interests lie — then off with your head! (Just Kidding!) “These last seven months have been a rewarding process… to take the year’s most-read fashion issue and steer its focus to the values, causes, and people making an impact in the world today,” Meghan said in a statement released by the Royal family. “Through this lens, I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of women chosen for the cover as well as the team of support I called upon with the issue to help bring this to light.” “I hope readers feel as inspired as I do, by the forces for change they’ll find within these pages,” she said. Source: Kim Rogerson / Getty Trans Woman Wins In Court After Brooklyn Landlord Humiliates Her After being humiliated during the apartment hunting process, Giana Desir is finally getting a tiny bit of justice. According to reports, Desir is a trans woman who began transitioning back in 2013. Two years later, her landlord all but kicked her out when he refused to renew her lease in October 2015. Another Brooklyn landlord, then told Desir he could maybe find a BASEMENT apartment somewhere …because, according to him, she shouldn’t be around “people and children.” From The NYDailyNews : At the same time, Desir’s friend “Jazz,” who lived in a different building, told her apartments were available. Yet when she finally spoke in person to Walter, the landlord there, he balked, [law judge John] Spooner wrote. Showing up at his office, he seemed “shocked and surprised” and asked, “‘Why didn’t you tell me you were transgender? Thank God, I had you come here at night. What would people have thought if they had seen you,’” he said, Spooner wrote of the humiliating exchange. Walter then said he couldn’t possibly rent Desir an apartment “around people and children,” but could find her a place “in a basement somewhere with its own entrance” and not “around too many people.” He also worried he’d be thought of as allowing a sexual encounter with Desir if he were to rent to her, and even suggested she stop the transitioning until she landed an apartment, telling her that she “’would look really crazy,’” Spooner wrote. Desir ultimately found an apartment through welfare benefits, but said her sense of independence was shattered and that Walter’s comments were “devastating.” Walter wasn’t the only one to treat her that way — at least 5 landlords refused her housing. In a moment of victory, however, she’s been awarded $25,000. Spooner recommended a compensatory fine of $15,000 and a civil penalty of $10,000, and ”that respondents be ordered to undergo anti-discrimination training” in his decision. “Based on the trial trial evidence, I find that respondents violated … (the City Human Rights Law) by discriminating against the complainant by denying her rental apartments because she is transgender,” Spooner wrote. Desir says folks like to put trans people under a “huge umbrella of negativity,” adding that it “felt good” to do something. “I didn’t realize how difficult it would be … emotions fade, memories fade, and it’s unfair the process and the length of the process you have to go through,” she said, according to the site. L ast month marked a year since the portraits of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama was introduced to the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the two vibrant illustrations of the couple have been a major draw for visitors. According to the Washington Post , the portraits of the Obamas were instrumental in helping the Smithsonian museum break a visitor record. “Where are the Obamas?”: Paintings of Barack and Michelle brought a million more people to Portrait Gallery https://t.co/kVcuLhVxFt — The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) February 26, 2019 The portraits—which were created by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald —has taken the visitorship at the gallery to new levels. The Smithsonian American Art Museum ended 2018 with a total of 2.3 million visitors; an increase of a million more visitors than they had the previous year. Those who work at the National Gallery’s information desk say that they’ve never witnessed new paintings draw in so many people prior to the addition of the Obama portraits. Gallery volunteer Mary Francis Koerner says that visitors would typically ask to be directed to the portraits of the presidents but that question has changed over time. “Now it’s ‘Where are the Obamas?” she told the news outlet. “They have brought in so many people. After 4:30 there’s an uptick of the younger generation, and that’s who they come to see.” While the Obama portraits are visually captivating, they hold deeper meaning beyond the surface. The couple selected two African-American artists to create the artwork; making them the first Black artists to receive presidential commissions. “Big museums like this are dedicated to what we as a society hold most dear,” Wiley said in a statement, according to the Denver Post . “Growing up as a kid in South Central Los Angeles, there weren’t too many people who looked like me on those walls. The ability to be the first African-American painter to paint the first African-American president of the United States — it doesn’t get any better than that.” The National Portrait Gallery was created in 1962 and the tradition of adding portraits of outgoing presidents began in 1994.
