Tom Cruise Having ‘A Blast’ With ‘Mission: Impossible’ Series

‘Ghost Protocol’ star tells MTV News he’ll continue the series, ‘If I can make ’em at a level I want to make ’em.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz MTV News’ Josh Horowitz and Tom Cruise Photo: MTV News The last time we wanted to talk to Tom Cruise , we had to get on a plane, fly 12 hours across the Atlantic, and practically scale the 2,716-foot Burj Khalifa in Dubai . It was easier this time, as the New York City premiere for Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” took place at the Ziegfeld Theatre, just a few blocks away from MTV News’ Times Square headquarters. The Big Apple opening brought out an array of Hollywood talent in addition to Cruise: wife Katie Holmes, co-stars Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg, plus Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Queen Latifah, Robin Thicke, Jerry Ferrara and Adam Shankman. Oh, and a couple thousand fans screaming so loud for Cruise you’d have thought they were hanging by a shoelace from the top of the Burj Khalifa. In defense of these fans, it was freaking Tom Cruise they were cheering for, and it’s been more than five years since the last “Mission” film. And if he keeps delivering franchise installments the way he wants, these premieres might happen many more times in the future. “If I can make ’em at a level I want to make ’em,” Cruise told MTV News of continuing the series. “Thing is, I’ve never wanted to compromise. If we can figure that out, I love making them. As a producer, they’re a lot of fun. As an actor, they’re really a blast and challenging.” What it comes down to for Cruise is a deep love of the source material: the ’60s-era TV series starring Peter Graves, Martin Landau and others. “I just remember watching it at home on television. I loved the music and the whole thing with the gadgets and the team and the places they would go to. It was kind of a family event for us. When I went to Paramount the first time to produce it, they weren’t really turning TV series into movies, but I was pretty excited about it. To be today at number four is pretty cool.” Are you excited for the latest “Mission” movie? Tell us in the comments! Tom Cruise Talks ‘Top Gun 2’: ‘We’re Working On It’

‘I hope we can figure this out to go do it again,’ Cruise tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Cruise Photo: MTV News “We’re working on it.” That’s the official word on “Top Gun 2,” straight from the star himself, Tom Cruise , who spoke with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz during an event in Dubai for In the fourth “M:I” movie, Cruise returns as castoff secret agent Ethan Hunt — the only character he has ever revisited during his decades-long career. The question remains: Will he ever don the Navy jumpsuit again and hop into a cockpit as Maverick? A little more than a year ago, the Internet went abuzz with rumors about Cruise, director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer reuniting for a potential “Top Gun” sequel. Scott confirmed he would be directing , but Cruise’s involvement remained a mystery. When Christopher McQuarrie, the writer of “The Usual Suspects” and the man hired to pen the script for “Top Gun 2,” said Maverick would be the lead for the follow-up, all engines seemed go. But then things went quiet. As the major players moved on to other projects — including “One Shot,” directed by McQuarrie and starring Cruise — sequel talk died down. When Horowitz sat down with Cruise in Dubai, the actor updated the project’s status and shed new light on the script. “I don’t think Chris [McQuarrie] is going to write it,” Cruise said. “Chris is directing ‘One Shot’ right now, which I’m acting. We’ve got to go back in January and finish it.” With McQuarrie out, that leaves Cruise, Scott and Bruckheimer as the only major players left with the project, but Cruise insists he could still do a sequel. “I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven’t made a film since ‘Days of Thunder,’ ” Cruise said. “Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, ‘Wow, that would be … what we could do now.’ ” For Cruise, the two key elements to a sequel would be a worthy script and the freedom to make the movie as they did in 1986. “I hope we can figure this out to go do it again,” he said. “If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot ‘Top Gun.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Burlesque’ Director Reveals Musical’s On-Set Challenges

Steven Antin tells MTV News he had to overcome technical issues while shooting dazzling Cher/ Christina Aguilera vehicle. By Kara Warner Directior Steven Antin and Christina Aguilera on the set of “Burlesque” Photo: Steven Vaughn Moviegoers who experienced the dazzling, sensual world of Cher and Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque” over the holiday weekend know that it’s a film with enough showstopping song-and-dance numbers to make heads spin. And while the characters make things appear flawless onscreen, a lot of blood, sweat and tears were shed to make that magic happen. MTV News recently caught up with “Burlesque” director Steven Antin, and we asked him which number posed the biggest challenge during filming. “Each of them had their own set of issues,” Antin admitted. “Christina’s ballad, ‘Bound to You,’ in its absolute and total simplicity was extremely complicated in terms of lighting and colors and texture. Executing that with the amount of smoke we had in the room and the backlighting, and they way that I wanted her hands and her body to cast shadows over the audience … it’s seemingly staggeringly beautiful, but technically it was really, really difficult to execute and very time-consuming,” he said. Perhaps not surprisingly, another taxing sequence to shoot was the big finale, “Show Me How You Burlesque,” a song Aguilera wrote for the movie. Antin said the sheer scale of the performance — from the number of dancers to the too-slippery dance floor to the lighting — added plenty of heat, both literally and figuratively, to the production. “We were shooting for a long time so that was extremely challenging and difficult to execute, especially in two days,” he said. We also asked Antin about his approach when it comes to actors singing onscreen: To lip-synch or not to lip-synch? “I always ask singers to sing every take; you have to,” the first-time director said. “For me, I have to because you create a completely different image when you’re lip-synching,” he explained. “Your whole entire body moves differently, so I would always ask the singers to sing during their takes. “What was extraordinary about this, was Cher was doing her solo , ‘You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me,’ “Antin recalled. “I could hear her over the playback, perfect pitch. She still has that powerful of a voice and I was just blown away because the playback is so loud. Same with Christina, I could hear her singing over the playback and I was just completely moved and everybody was blown away by it.” Have you seen “Burlesque”? ‘Burlesque’ Is About The ‘Tease,’ Cher Says

Plus: We badger co-star Stanley Tucci about why he doesn’t get a song-and-dance number in the film. By Kara Warner Cher Photo: MTV News After weeks of seeing those titillating “Burlesque” billboards and TV spots, the movie is finally here! For those looking for something fun to see this holiday weekend — specifically a musical with a little sugar and spice, plus Cher, Christina Aguilera and a lot of eye candy — then this is the movie for you. And despite the stars’ admissions to a few unsexy moments during production, it’s safe to say that the majority of the film is sexy, sassy fun. But don’t take our word for it; take Cher’s. When we caught up with the legendary star recently and sly, quick-witted co-star Stanley Tucci, they gave us a rundown on what sexy is all about: chest hair. To better set up this scenario, it should be noted that when MTV News walked into the interview room, Cher and Tucci were involved in a playful exchange about whether Tucci should button more buttons on his shirt. “I can see the little ‘I think I’m sexy,’ because you’ve got the button happening,” Cher told Tucci about his chest hair peeking out of his shirt. “Oh, the button, yeah. Oh, I can’t [button it up]. That would be sad,” he quipped. “Also, the hair is pushing the shirt away, so you’ve got to let it out,” Cher shot back. “That’s right,” Tucci said, opening his collar wider. “That’s right, baby.” “It’s gotta be free, it’s gotta run wild,” Cher added. With a break in the friendly banter, we told Tucci that with all the song-and-dance action in the film, we were disappointed that his character doesn’t have his own number. “No, believe me, you’re not,” he said, which made Cher laugh out loud. “Everybody keeps asking that question!” she exclaimed. “If there had been, there would have been real disappointment,” Tucci insisted. Surely with all the downtime on set, he picked up a few things, like some dance moves. “I did, but I got shots for those,” he joked. “No, I’m not a singer, I’m not a singer.” Very well. We then turned the conversation back to the subject at hand — “Burlesque” — and Cher’s take on what makes the film’s style of dance sexy without being all about sex. “Burlesque itself is more about tease,” Cher said. “It’s more about what you think is going to happen, not necessarily what’s happening. It’s kind of fun.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Burlesque.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . By James Kuo Nicki Minaj arrives at the MAC cosmetics store in Times Square on Tuesday Photo: Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images NEW YORK — Nicki Minaj took New York City by storm Tuesday (November 23) while promoting her debut album, Pink Friday. Her first stop was the Times Square MAC Cosmetics store, where she talked about her special edition Pink Friday MAC lipstick. Her fans — known as Barbiez — eagerly awaited her appearance. Jasmine Taylor, 23, was “super excited” to see Nicki. “She is my idol. I live for her. I’m, like, shaking right now,” said Jasmine, who sported a Nicki Minaj haircut and a glittering “Barbie” necklace. “She keeps it real and is so personable. The guys give her respect because of her lyrics.” Kelly Baker, a student at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, wasn’t dressed like Nicki, but she was just as big a fan. What draws Kelly to Nicki is how she is not like any other artist. “She is really different and the only person who I can think of that is like her is — I don’t know. I think she is so different and inventive.” Eric Cruz, 23, loves her so much that he wanted her to sign his neck so he could get it tattooed on him permanently. All her fans came armed with the new Pink Friday album, hoping to get their copy signed. Tishae Lauren from the Bronx had to go to three different stores until she finally found a few lingering copies at Walmart — which she promptly bought up. All the Barbiez in the crowd thought Nicki would outsell Kanye West and My Chemical Romance, who also dropped new albums Monday. “I think Pink Friday will do good because everybody loves Nicki. She’s the sh–,” Anthony Pecheco insisted. Her fans are also excited about her upcoming documentary, “My Time Now,” which premieres Sunday, November 28, on MTV. “I’m excited because we always see her as a cartoon character,” Tishae said. “Finally, we get to see her more serious side.” Nicki also drew one fan all the way from Rome. Mario Petroccione came to New York just to see his favorite female MC. “She’s huge, and I love her,” he said. “She never comes to Italy, so that’s why I come to New York to see her.” When asked what it was about Nicki that got him to fly all the way from Rome, Mario replied, “She’s just lovely.” Did you rush out to the store to get Pink Friday ? Christina Aguilera And Cam Gigandet Talk Sexy ‘Burlesque’ Wardrobe

While Xtina squeezed into ‘push-up bras, high heels and fishnet stockings,’ Gigandet wore …a cookie box? By Brianne Riviello, with reporting by Kara Warner Cam Gigandet Photo: MTV News Fresh off Christina Aguilera’s saucy song-and-dance number at the American Music Awards on Sunday, many are sweating out the release of her new film, “Burlesque,” which hits theaters Wednesday. “Burlesque” follows a small-town girl (Aguilera) who journeys to the city looking for her big break but instead finds herself in the sensual world of burlesque. Aguilera makes her feature debut alongside the legendary Cher and a beautiful and talented supporting cast that includes Cam Gigandet, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Hough and Eric Dane. We recently caught up with the stars of the film, who giggled as they recalled their unique wardrobe racks for the suggestive-yet-sweet musical. Gigandet joked that, unlike the women in the film who were clad in elaborate bustiers and stockings, his wardrobe included “cookie boxes and pajamas.” (In one very memorable scene, Gigandet parades around with nothing but a Famous Amos box covering his nether regions.) Aguilera lamented that he got off easy: “You didn’t have to do any push-up bras, any high heels, any fishnet stockings.” Aguilera did reveal a few makeup secrets, however, and reported that Gigandet donned eyeliner for his part as Jack, the love interest to Aguilera’s Ali. Gigandet took it all in stride. “It was fun to be something different,” he said. “Yes, it was. I gotta say, it made my job easier to kind of, you know, step into a different character, into a different world.” On a side note, Gigandet also commented on how the legion of fans from his stint in the “Twilight” series has followed him, as compared to other roles — particularly as martial-arts champion Ryan McCarthy in 2008’s “Never Back Down.” “It varies, where I am,” he said, regarding whether he’s still bombarded by Twilighters wherever he goes. “I mean, you know, when I was in New Orleans and Louisiana a few months ago, it was ‘Never Back Down’ that caught everyone’s attention. I know, I love it. But there’s ‘Twilight’ fans all over the world.” Aguilera noted that, once “Burlesque” hits theaters, it will be Gigandet’s character Jack who will get all the buzz from fans. “Of course,” Gigandet laughed. “Then I’ll be ‘Famous Amos cookies’ for the rest of my life.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Burlesque.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
