DistribPix’s Steven Morowitz: The Mr. Skin Interview [PICS]

Steven Morowitz was born for SKINema. He’s the second-generation owner of DistribPix , the legendary distributor that’s been credited with creating the adult industry “one pubic hair at a time”. DistribPix was created in 1965 and thrived by providing the grindhouses of Times Square with sexploitation fare like Michael and Roberta Findlay ‘s Satan’s Bed (1965) and Joe Sarno ‘s The Bed and How to Make It! (1966). Bit by bit, these films pushed the limits of what could be shown on screen until adult films as we know them first came into being in the late 60’s. It was then that DistribPix blossomed into a production company that produced many of the classics of the “Golden Age” of porn from directors like Bill Lustig , Chuck Vincent , Carter Stevens , Shaun Costello , Danny Stone , and The Amero Brothers . And when VHS came along, DistribPix was once again at the forefront of this SKINematic revolution, distributing films from their massive catalog for the home video market. But the decline of the VHS market also caused a decline in DistribPix’s business, and by the early 2000s the company had essentially gone dormant. That’s when Steven stepped in and made it his mission to restore and re-release these historically important films in deluxe special editions that put them in their “proper historical context” (i.e.,come packed with cool commentary and illuminating extras). DistribPix is the company behind the restoration of Naked Came the Stranger (1975) released earlier this year ( see HD pics and clips here at Mr. Skin ), as well as the HD restoration of The Opening of Misty Beethoven we told you about earlier this week on the Mr. Skin blog. We talked to Steven at home in New York City, where he told us about growing up in Times Square, some of the gems of the DistribPix catalog, and their Kickstarter campaign to bring Misty to Blu-ray. Joe Rubin: The Mr. Skin Skinterview [PICS]

We interview a lot of interesting people here on the Mr. Skin blog, but few of them can say their work is as important as Joe Rubin ‘s. Joe basically came out of the womb an exploitation fanatic and has been amassing an impressive private collection of vintage exploitation and erotic cinema since he was a teenager. Now he’s also launched a digital restoration company, Process Blue , that specializes in rescuing exploitation and X-rated films from obscurity and giving these long-neglected artifacts the respect that they deserve. Joe says that often when he contacts directors about restoring their films, they are shocked and touched to realize (often for the first time) that their work is remembered and appreciated as art. That’s something that Process Blue is trying to change. Process Blue is getting off to an auspicious start by participating in the excellent restorations of Radley Metzger’ s “Henry Paris” films in partnership with DistribPix and with the very, very exciting project they’re working on now: a Kickstarter campaign to restore three previously “lost” films by exploitation legend Herschell Gordon Lewis . We talked to Joe at his home base just around the corner from the Mr. Skin offices, where he told us about his massive collection, his work with Process Blue, and the unmatchable elegance of Kelly Nichols. Sucker Punch: DVD Roundup 6-28-11

This week’s mainstream DVD releases are a real Sucker Punch to the cajones , with the breast nudity coming from a 15-second topless scene with Sandra Lavoie in the drama Barney’s Version . And the barely-legal-babes-with-samurai-swords extravaganza Sucker Punch ? Forget it. Not a single nip slip, not even in the extra 18 minutes included on the extended version. Fans of classic 80’s slasher flicks fare much better this week, with MTV’s “uptown” Julie Brown dancing topless while a young Peeping Tom watches in Bloody Birthday (1981) and redhead Robin Groves feeling up her own bare pair in The Nesting (1981), both nude on Blu-Ray. In other nudes, the Radley Metzger re-release train keeps on rollin’ this week with a deluxe edition of the extended cut of Camille 2000 (1969) hitting DVD and Blu-Ray. More after the jump!
