According to the National Science Foundation, African Americans make up just 5 percent of the science and engineering workforce. Morgan State University President Dr.  David Wilson issued this statement: “We are honored that Morgan State University was selected for this competitive grant, and confident that it will further advance our efforts to increase diversity in the STEM talent pipeline, while also turning out workforce-ready talent in high-demand industries like aerospace. Today, the nonprofit Base 11 announced that Morgan State U is the winner of a three-year, $1.6 million Aerospace Workforce and Leadership Development Grant, which will fund a state-of-the-art rocketry lab & launch a student rocketry team. #MorganOnSocial https://t.co/RgvLLd9h8B pic.twitter.com/MyTUYdz5Zk — Morgan State University (@MorganStateU) February 11, 2019 Several years have passed since the tech industry came under fire for its lack of diversity. Little has changed despite its efforts. Facebook Global Director of Diversity  Maxine Williams   admitted in 2017 that the pace of change for her company had been slow. Women represented 35 percent of Facebook’s workforce—a 2 percent increase from the previous year. And the company added just 1 percent of Hispanic and African-American employees year-over-year. As poor as that sounds, the tech industry overall had a decline in the number of Black and Hispanic employees. Apple’s diversity report  stated that the company worldwide was 68 percent male. Here in the United States, the tech giant was 56 percent White, 19 percent Asian, 12 percent Hispanic and 9 percent Black. “We want to ensure that the next generation of space innovators is just as diverse as America,” said African-American former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin  who was on hand to present the check. “I am excited to see this generation of students getting critical hands-on experience in rocket technology, and I encourage Morgan State’s students to seize this incredible opportunity to reach for the stars.” The grant will fund the build-out of a liquid-fuel rocketry lab at Morgan State, as well as the recruitment and hiring of an aerospace faculty leader to create a world-class liquid fuel rocketry program. Morgan State aims to bring together these elements to successfully build and launch a liquid fuel rocket that reaches 150,000 feet by 2022. “At Morgan we encourage our students to be bold and to aim for the stars, and with the launch of this program, we can provide them with the resources to take on that challenge literally,” Wilson added. Tess Holliday Claps Back After Piers Morgan Body-Shames Her Cosmo Cover

Piers Morgan can be such a mixed bag. It’s nice ot see him berate that vulture Samantha Grant . It’s gross to see him ask Caitlin Jenner creepy questions about her body . This time, he’s making gross comments about another woman’s body — plus size model and trailblazer Tess Holliday. Tess graced the cover of Cosmopolitan , and Piers was apparently unable to resist commenting on her body and accusing her of being some sort of public health hazard. Before Piers decided to insert his opinion into the narrative, Tess was delighted with her cover. “Phew,” Tess writes on Instagram. “I’m literally a COSMO GIRL!!” “Can’t believe I’m saying that!” she continues. “Thank you @CosmopolitanUK for this incredible opportunity ” Tess discusses the impact that body positivity can have, writing: “If I saw a body like mine on this magazine when I was a young girl, it would have changed my life ” Tess advises her fans: “Issue hits stands 8/31!” Unfortunately, Piers Morgan is one of those dudes who worries about other people loving themselves on their terms instead of on his. “As Britain battles an ever-worsening obesity crisis,” Piers laments. “This is the new cover of Cosmo.” “Apparently,” Piers continues. “We’re supposed to view it as a ‘huge step forward for body positivity.’” “What a load of old baloney,” Piers declares. ” This cover,” Piers continues. “Is just as dangerous & misguided as celebrating size zero models.” Tess took to Twitter and hit back. “To everyone saying I’m a burden to the British health care system,” Tess begins. “I’m american,” Texx explains. “So you don’t have to worry about my fat ass.” She is such a delight and doesn’t hesitate to use humor when speaking truth to power. Good for her. (Naturally, we shouldn’t conflate body size with health, and no one should be seen as a “burden” because of their health) Tess says that the people who are uncomfortable with the size of her body, which literally does not impact them at all, should have more important things on their minds. “Worry about what horrible people you are,” Tess suggests to her detractors. That’s harsh — but considering that Piers just accused her of being the next Typhoid Mary and he was far from the worst person to comment, it’s fair. She says that they have demonstrated that they’re horrible “by whining about how me being on the cover of a glossy magazine impacts your small minded life.” It’s difficult to understand why so many people feel like they have the right to tell other people what to do with their own bodies. Tess’ body does not impact the rest of us. It just doesn’t.  But a photo of her on the cover of a magazine could have a very real and powerful effect on little girls (or others, but girls especially) who are struggling to love themselves. When people like Piers say that body positive images of Tess and women like her will somehow make the “obesity epidemic” worse, it is clear what they really mean. They mean that people who have learned to love themselves won’t go on dangerous starvation diets that ultimately don’t work in a desperate attempt to get their bodies looking how Piers wants them to. If you think that one body type is more attractive than another, that’s fine — we all have preferences. But women are allowed to just exist without you wanting to bang them.

Morgan Freeman Sets The Record Straight On The Sexual Misconduct Claims Against Him – “I Did Not Assault Women”

Morgan Freeman Releases Statement On Sexual Harassment Claims As you probably know by now, Morgan Freeman has been accused of sexual harassment by 16 different women . The actor has been accused of everything from trying to lift a set assistant’s skirt and inquiring about her underwear, to making sexually charged comments about staff members’ breasts and buttocks. Granted, sexual misconduct includes a spectrum of inappropriate and intimidating behavior toward women and can include everything from harassment to outright rape. None of it is justified or okay for any reason. But Freeman wants it to be perfectly clear that while he is a flawed individual who may not always make the best decisions around women…he is definitely nobody’s Cosby or Weinstein with it . In a statement given through his publicist Stan Rosenfield, Morgan let it be known in clear terms that his allegations are NOT inclusive of him physically forcing himself on or sexually coercing any woman in any way: “I am devastated that 80 years of my life is at risk of being undermined, in the blink of an eye, by Thursday’s media reports. All victims of assault and harassment deserve to be heard. And we need to listen to them. But it is not right to equate horrific incidents of sexual assault with misplaced compliments or humor. I admit that I am someone who feels a need to try to make women—and men—feel appreciated and at ease around me. As a part of that, I would often try to joke with and compliment women, in what I thought was a light-hearted and humorous way. Clearly I was not always coming across the way I intended. And that is why I apologized Thursday and will continue to apologize to anyone I might have upset, however unintentionally. But I also want to be clear: I did not create unsafe work environments. I did not assault women. I did not offer employment or advancement in exchange for sex. Any suggestion that I did so is completely false.” Thus far, no accusation of unwanted sexual contact with Freeman has been reported. He’s only been accused of making comments and jokes that made women very uncomfortable. A CNN Entertainment reporter compiled a few examples of Morgan’s “inappropriate” behavior around entertainment reporters, including an instance in which she says that he looked her pregnant body up and down suggestively and said “boy do I wish I was there.” Check out this account of Morgan’s “misconduct” during promotional junkets: Now…is it just us, or was he not referring to her or her body in that second clip whatsoever?
