This is a sad story from all sides… Former Marching 100 Band Member Convicted Of Manslaughter In 2011 Hazing Case Via LA Times : A 26-year-old former member of Florida A&M’s vaunted marching band was convicted of manslaughter and hazing Friday, nearly three years after band member Robert Champion was beaten to death with drumsticks, mallets and other items during a hazing ritual. Dante Martin was convicted of manslaughter and three counts of college hazing causing injury or death, a representative for the 9th Circuit State’s Attorney’s Office in Orlando told the Los Angeles Times. A sentencing date has not been set, and no other information was immediately available, the representative said. More than 15 students were charged in Champion’s death. Champion, of Decatur, Ga., died of blunt-force trauma after fellow band members punched him and hit him with drumsticks in a ritual known as “crossing Bus C.” Seven students accepted plea deals that resulted in probation or community service, according to the Associated Press; one student, Jesse Baskin, was sentenced to a year in prison. Seven students accepted plea deals that resulted in probation or community service, according to the Associated Press; one student, Jesse Baskin, was sentenced to a year in prison. Champion’s death led to the resignation of the band leader and the university president and caused the school to shut down the band for nearly two years. The band was allowed to return to the field in September 2013 after the school instituted a slew of anti-hazing restrictions. A young man dies, several students jailed, and the band program is tarnished…all over nonsense. When will hazing as a rite of passage die out? SMH.

State Of Florida Charges 13 In Hazing Death Of FAMU Drum Major These “kids” could do up to six years behind bars for taking part in the hazing of Robert Champion . Florida prosecutors on Wednesday charged 13 individuals in connection with the hazing death of a Florida A&M University drum major last November, in a case that has heightened scrutiny of violent rituals on college campuses across the country. Lawson Lamar, the state attorney for Orange County, said at a news conference in Orlando that 11 of the people face felony hazing charges, which carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison. The remainder face misdemeanor hazing charges. Mr. Lawson said he would not release the names of those charged, since most of them have not yet been arrested. The death of the drum major, 26-year-old Robert Champion, was “nothing short of an American tragedy,” he said. “We know that Robert Champion died as a result of being beaten” and “his death is not linked to one sole strike but is attributed to multiple blows.” Mr. Champion collapsed aboard a bus in Orlando after a hazing incident following a football game against rival Bethune-Cookman University. The medical examiner’s office in Orlando ruled the death a homicide, caused by internal bleeding resulting from blunt-force trauma. Mr. Champion, who was previously healthy, died within an hour of the hazing incident, according to the medical examiner’s report. An autopsy found “extensive contusions of his chest, arms, shoulder and back,” the report said. In a statement released after the charges, Solomon Badger, chairman of the Florida A&M board of trustees, and university president James Ammons said, “We are vigorously working to eradicate hazing from FAMU and doing everything within our power to ensure an incident like this never happens again. Our hearts and our prayers are with the Champion family and the extended FAMU family as we all continue to deal with this tragedy.” What a terrible tragedy. These charges were vital in order for colleges to take these situations seriously. Robert Champion should not have died. May he rest in peace. Source More On Bossip! Southwest DeKalb High School graduate Robert Champion, 26, was found unresponsive in a parked bus in front of a hotel in Orlando, Florida. The tragedy occurred after FAMU’s (Florida A&M) football team lost to Bethune-Cookman (November 19), investigators suspect it is a result of hazing. In Florida, if any deaths are the result of hazing it is considered to be a third-degree felony. The investigation will continue and will not be able to confirm if hazing was the result for another 10-12 weeks explained by Sheri Blanton, a forensic coordinator for the medical examiner. In response the president of the University, James Ammons, suspended the marching band, Marching 100, from practice and performances until the cause of death is revealed.
