Spice Girls ‘Viva Forever!’ Musical: Five Must-Hear Tracks

MTV News picks the pop ballads we most want to hear when the Spice Girls musical hits the stage. By Jocelyn Vena Spice Girls Photo: The Spice Girls — all five of them — appeared in London on Tuesday to announce “Viva Forever!,” a musical based on their career and music, named after their 1997 single. The girls gathered on the stairs of the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, 16 years after they shot their star-making “Wannabe” video there. With “Mamma Mia!” producer Judy Craymer and “Absolutely Fabulous” star Jennifer Saunders collaborating on the project, this jukebox musical, according to the ladies, will “embrace all generations.” This is hardly the first time that the ladies have used their rise to fame as the basis for a piece of semi-fiction. They spoofed their pop superstardom in the 1997 comedy “Spice World.” And, while it was a landmark event to see all five of the Spice Girls in one place on Tuesday, they also reunited for a massive world tour in 2007 . In an interview with the BBC at the event, the Spice Girls themselves seemed excited to have their music, which focused quite frequently on themes of female empowerment, hitting the stage for a new crop of young people to hear. Posh Spice herself, Victoria Beckham, added, “We’re going to be introducing a whole new generation to Girl Power.” So, when it comes to a musical based on the music of the peace sign-making, platform shoe-wearing, brassy fivesome, there’s an endless number of tracks that can be plucked from their catalog to include in the show. So, MTV News is pitching our five favorite (and in our opinion definitive) tracks that we hope make the final cut of the show. “Wannabe” This is the track that introduced the world to the Spice Girls. Off their 1996 debut, Spice, the cheeky song reminded any potential love interests that “If you wannabe my lover, you got to get with my friends.” Not only did it launch the ladies to pop fame, it also made the term “zigazig-ha” a perplexing, must sing-along-to lyric. “Say You’ll Be There” Also off Spice, this track, which spawned our favorite SG video of all time thanks to its overt references to “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!,” picked up where “Wannabe” left off, reminding girls everywhere that just because a guy really likes you doesn’t mean you have to commit to him. Girl power, indeed. “Spice Up Your Life” One year after dropping their debut, the ladies were still riding high off instant mega-fame and released 1997’s Spice World. “Spice Up Your Life” was all about throwing caution to the wind no matter your race or gender, with the ladies proudly proclaiming, “Colors of the world/ Spice up your life/ Every boy and every girl/ Spice up your life.” With congos and Latin music influencing the sound of the track (and everything that year), “Spice” was an anthem that proved their music can just make you dance, or merengue. “Stop” “Stop right now/Thank you very much/I need somebody with a human touch.” While we’re still not exactly sure what that means — unless, of course the ladies had been romanced by robots 8212; we get where the girls are coming from on this 1998 single about guys who just can’t quit playing games with their hearts. “Too Much” The girl group slowed it down in ’98 for this awesome ballad where the five ladies have some choice words for any guy who thinks it’s going to be easy to woo the Spice Girls. Reminder, they want a man, not a boy who thinks he can. Um, tell us about it, girls. Which is your favorite Spice Girls song? Tell us in the comments below! Related Artists Spice Girls

Justin Bieber Nabs Year’s Biggest Chart Debut With Believe

Bieber’s latest sold more than 374,000 copies in its first week, edging Madonna’s MDNA to claim the title of year’s biggest bow. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber’s Believe Photo: Most predicted it , and now it’s official: Justin Bieber ‘s Believe scored the year’s biggest chart debut, selling more than 374,000 copies and blasting the competition on the Billboard Top 200. Believe — Bieber’s fourth album to debut at #1 — slightly edged Madonna’s MDNA, which sold 359,000 copies when it was released in late March, to claim the title of year’s biggest bow, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It’s also the best first-week number any album has posted since Adele’s 21 rode a post-Grammy surge to sales of more than 729,000 copies in February. Bieber’s album also sold nearly twice the copies as its closest competition, Kenny Chesney ‘s Welcome to the Fishbowl, which opens at #2 on the chart with an impressive 193,000 copies in its first week of release. Usually that number is more than enough to take #1, but not this week. Fiona Apple ‘s first album in seven years, The Idler Wheel, debuts at #3, selling nearly 72,000 copies, followed by another returning alt icon, the Smashing Pumpkins , who sold more than 53,000 copies of their Oceania to take #4. The “Rock of Ages” soundtrack rounds out the top five, selling nearly 49,000 copies. Usher, last week’s chart champ (and Bieber’s mentor), is in at #6 with his Looking 4 Myself album, which sold 48,000 copies in its second week. Adele ‘s aforementioned 21 lands at #7 (more than 47,000 copies sold), followed by One Direction ‘s Up All Night (more than 41,000 sold) and Luke Bryan ‘s Tailgates & Tanlines (nearly 28,000 sold). Rush ‘s Clockwork Angels closes out the top 10, selling nearly 27,000 copies. Other debuts on the chart include the Dirty Heads ‘ Cabin by the Sea, which opens at #18 with sales of nearly 18,000 copies, “Once” star Glen Hansard ‘s Rhythm and Repose (#21, more than 16,000 copies sold) and the soundtrack to Pixar’s “Brave,” which bows at #33, with sales of nearly 12,000 copies. And while the story of this week’s Billboard chart is unquestionably Bieber, next week could be a different story. He’ll face challenges from both Linkin Park ‘s LIVING THINGS and Maroon 5 ‘s Overexposed, both of which could make his reign a short-lived one. Can Bieber make it two weeks in a row atop the charts? We’ll just have to wait and see. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Justin Bieber Related Artists Justin Bieber

Where Does Kanye West’s Fantasy Rank Among Biggest 2010 Debuts?

Taylor Swift’s Speak Now leads the pack with more than a million sold in its first week. By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage By now, you’re probably aware that Kanye West is once again king of the Billboard albums chart , as his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sold nearly 496,000 copies to grab the top spot. Fantasy is West’s fourth straight album to debut at #1, and its first-week numbers are most definitely eye-popping — but they’re not the biggest of 2010. That honor actually goes to someone with whom West is well-acquainted, Taylor Swift, whose Speak Now scored the year’s biggest debut, selling an incredible 1,046,718 copies in its first week back in late October. Eminem’s massive Recovery — which is the best-selling album of 2010, with more than 3 million copies moved — is next, as it sold more than 741,000 copies when it was released in June. Soldier of Love, Sade’s first album in nearly a decade, posted the year’s third-highest debut, selling nearly 502,000 copies in February. West’s Dark Twisted Fantasy is up next at #4, followed by Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now, which sold nearly 481,000 copies in its first week. Rounding out the top 10 are Drake’s Thank Me Later (#6, nearly 447,000 copies), Nicki Minaj’s just-released Pink Friday (#7, 375,000 copies), Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond (#8, 329,000 copies), Susan Boyle’s The Gift (#9, nearly 318,000) and Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 (#10, nearly 283,000 copies sold). Falling just outside the top 10 are the year’s two biggest rock debuts: Jack Johnson, whose To the Sea sold nearly 243,000 copies when it was released in June, and Linkin Park, who sold more than 241,000 copies of their A Thousand Suns album in September.
