Taylor Swift Tops Billboard 2012 Top Money Makers

Lady Gaga, Adele and Lil Wayne make top 10 By Gil Kaufman Taylor Swift Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga , Katy Perry and Adele had huge years in 2011, with major tours, strings of hit singles, Grammy wins and #1-hogging chart-topping albums. But when Billboard magazine compiled its 2012 list of “Music’s Top 40 Money Makers” it was Taylor Swift who ruled them all. In fact, the 22-year-old country pop darling out-earned all of her fellow ladies combined. According to the magazine’s calculations, Swift earned her #1 spot on the earner’s list thanks to reported earnings of $35.7 million in the 2011 calendar year. Those earnings came from a combination of revenue from quadruple-platinum-plus the sales of Speak Now and its accompanying tour, which grossed $88.5 million in the U.S. alone. But because Swift writes her own songs, she also rolled up a big chunk of change in songwriting royalties as well. Right behind Swift was iconic rock band U2, who earned a reported $32.1 million thanks to their record-setting 360 tour — which grossed a whopping $736 million total over two years — including $50 million in merchandise sales and 1.4 million in digital track sales. Country singer Kenny Chesney was #3 with $29.8 million, followed by previous tally topper Gaga at #4 with $25.3 million. She stayed in the top 5 thanks to sales of Born This Way and its accompanying Monster Ball tour, which grossed more than $51 million. She also moved 12.7 million digital tracks. Lil Wayne rounded out the top 5 with $23.1 million, made up of 12.3 million in digital track sales, $44.7 million in tour grosses and cash from his gig as founder of Young Money Entertainment. The rest of the top 10: Sade (#6, $16.3 million), Bon Jovi (#7, $15.8), Celine Dion (#8, $14.2 million) and Jason Aldean (#9, $13.4 million). Adele rounded out the top list at #10 with $13 million, mostly from the unstoppable streak of her 21 album’s chart run,
which included sales of 6.7 million copies last year alone. The “Glee” cast were just outside the top 10 at #11 ($12.5 million), Katy Perry hit #14 (11.9 million), Britney Spears was at #16 ($10 million) and like her sisters in pop, Rihanna made it to #22 ($7.6 million) through a combination of album and single sales and touring revenue. Other notable entries: Enrique Iglesias (#23, $7.4 million), Usher (#30, $6.2 million), Foo Fighters (#31, $6 million), Justin Bieber (#35, $5.5 million), Kanye West (#39, $5.3 million) and Linkin Park (#40, $5.1 million). Billboard calculated the figures based on proprietary data from its Boxscore archives for concert grosses, Nielsen SoundScan for sales of physical and digital albums, singles and ringtone sales, and Nielsen BDS for terrestrial radio play and streaming service information. Yes, for the 18th time, the British belter’s 21 claims the top spot, selling nearly 116,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album has now tied Garth Brooks’ Ropin’ the Wind for 18 non-consecutive weeks at #1; she needs just three more weeks atop the chart to move past the “Bodyguard” soundtrack and Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii, both of which notched 20 weeks at #1. As is usually the case, Adele makes it look easy. Her closest chart competition comes in the form of Tim McGraw ‘s Emotional Traffic, which scores the week’s biggest debut, opening at #2 with sales of nearly 68,000 copies. Lamb of God ‘s Resolution bows at #3, selling almost 53,000 copies. The 2012 Grammy Nominees compilation (more than 52,000 copies sold) and Ingrid Michaelson ‘s Human Again (nearly 40,000 copies sold) round out the top five. Adele’s 21 Ties Titanic Soundtrack With 16th Week At #1

British belter’s smash album catches up to 1997 blockbuster album with its 16th non-consecutive week atop the Billboard chart. By James Montgomery Adele Move over James Cameron (and Celine Dion): Adele just landed her Sweet 16th. Yes, once again the British belter’s 21 album tops the Billboard 200 chart, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, the 16th (non-consecutive) week it sits at #1. The mark ties it with the soundtrack to the 1997 blockbuster “Titanic,” which was buoyed by Dion’s massive “My Heart Will Go On.” Up next for Adele? Well, first, it’s Billy Ray Cyrus’ Some Gave All, which topped the Billboard charts for 17 weeks in 1992, followed by Garth Brooks’ Ropin’ the Wind, which was #1 for 18 weeks. Then, it’s the 1992 soundtrack to “The Bodyguard,” which, powered by Whitney Houston’s takes on “I’m Every Woman” and “I Will Always Love You,” spent 20 weeks atop the Billboard albums chart. Oh, and Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii, which also spent 20 weeks at #1. Rarefied air, indeed. 21 sold more than 104,000 copies to take the top spot, easily outpacing the week’s biggest debut, the David Crowder Band ‘s Give Us Rest, which sold nearly 51,000 copies to open at #2. The Black Keys ‘ El Camino holds strong at #3 for a second week, selling more than 36,000 copies and moving past the 500,000 mark in total sales in the process. Drake ‘s Take Care (nearly 32,000 copies sold) and Snow Patrol ‘s new Fallen Empires (nearly 31,000 copies) round out the top five. Young Jeezy ‘s TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition is in at #6, with sales of nearly 24,000 copies, followed by Rihanna ‘s Talk That Talk at #7 (nearly 22,000 copies), Coldplay ‘s Mylo Xyloto at #8 (nearly 20,000 copies), Nickelback ‘s Here and Now at #9 (19,000-plus copies) and the 40th installment of the ubiquitous Now compilation, which comes in at #10 with sales of more than 17,000 copies. Where Does Kanye West’s Fantasy Rank Among Biggest 2010 Debuts?

Taylor Swift’s Speak Now leads the pack with more than a million sold in its first week. By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage By now, you’re probably aware that Kanye West is once again king of the Billboard albums chart , as his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sold nearly 496,000 copies to grab the top spot. Fantasy is West’s fourth straight album to debut at #1, and its first-week numbers are most definitely eye-popping — but they’re not the biggest of 2010. That honor actually goes to someone with whom West is well-acquainted, Taylor Swift, whose Speak Now scored the year’s biggest debut, selling an incredible 1,046,718 copies in its first week back in late October. Eminem’s massive Recovery — which is the best-selling album of 2010, with more than 3 million copies moved — is next, as it sold more than 741,000 copies when it was released in June. Soldier of Love, Sade’s first album in nearly a decade, posted the year’s third-highest debut, selling nearly 502,000 copies in February. West’s Dark Twisted Fantasy is up next at #4, followed by Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now, which sold nearly 481,000 copies in its first week. Rounding out the top 10 are Drake’s Thank Me Later (#6, nearly 447,000 copies), Nicki Minaj’s just-released Pink Friday (#7, 375,000 copies), Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond (#8, 329,000 copies), Susan Boyle’s The Gift (#9, nearly 318,000) and Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 (#10, nearly 283,000 copies sold). Falling just outside the top 10 are the year’s two biggest rock debuts: Jack Johnson, whose To the Sea sold nearly 243,000 copies when it was released in June, and Linkin Park, who sold more than 241,000 copies of their A Thousand Suns album in September. Lady Antebellum Take Back Top Billboard Spot From Sade

‘American Idol’ finalist Danny Gokey debuts at #4. By Gil Kaufman Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now Photo: Liberty After a three-week run at the top, Sade ‘s Soldier of Love will be replaced at #1 on the Billboard albums chart by the very album she vanquished last month, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now. The country trio’s second CD will retake the top spot thanks to sales of 126,000, while Sade will drop down a spot after moving 79,000 more units for sales of nearly 900,000 in four weeks, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Though he sold a bit less than Kris Allen did in his first week, last season’s #4 finisher on “American Idol,” Danny Gokey , had a solid debut at #4 (65,000) with My Best Days a week after appearing on the show; Allen’s self-titled album debuted at #11 on sales of 70,000 in November. Also breaking into the top five was country star Blake Shelton , whose Hillbilly Bone landed at #3 (71,000). The soundtrack to Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” re-imagining, Almost Alice — featuring songs from Avril Lavigne, the All-American Rejects, Owl City, Tokio Hotel and All Time Low — sold 58,000 copies to debut at #5, followed by the latest from rockers Lifehouse , Smoke & Mirrors (#6, 54,000). The third album from R&B singer Raheem DeVaughn , The Love & War MasterPeace, debuted at #9 (45,000), just ahead of country newbie Easton Corbin ‘s self-titled debut (#10, 43,000). The only holdovers in the top 10 were Lady Gaga ‘s unstoppable The Fame (#7, 49,000), which is zeroing in on 3 million in sales, and the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#8, 46,000). Just outside the top 10, Jason Derulo ‘s self-titled debut hit #11 on sales of 42,000. As he begins his one-year prison sentence , Lil Wayne ‘s Rebirth will fall six spots to #12 (32,000), just ahead of Ke$ha ‘s Animal, which drops six to #13 (30,000) as sales approach half a million. Also falling out of the top 10 is Justin Bieber ‘s My World (27,000), which slid five spots to #15. Among the other debuts this week: DJ Khaled ‘s Victory (#14, 28,000), Peter Gabriel ‘s covers album, Scratch My Back (#26, 20,000) and a live album from long-running shamrock punks Flogging Molly , Live at the Greek Theatre (#40, 13,000). Meanwhile, showing the power of another amazing viral video, OK Go ‘s Of the Blue Colour of the Sky moved back onto the lower reaches of the charts to #179 after six weeks out of the top 200 thanks to the massive coverage of their Rube Goldberg-ian clip for “This Too Shall Pass.” Look for a shakeup at the top next week as new albums from Gorillaz , Ludacris and country singer Gary Allan crash the charts.
