Ariana Grande Tops Billboard 200 Chart With "Yours Truly"

While Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball dominates the Internet and Katy Perry “Roars” all over the radio, another young singer is dominating record sales. Ariana Grade debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with Yours Truly , a set of ’90s-inspired R&B tracks that many have compared to vintage Mariah Carey. Ariana Grande – The Way ft. Mac Miller Grande’s album sold 138,000 copies last week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, followed closely by Tamar Braxton’s Love & War , with sales of 114,000. The sky appears to be the limit for the talented 20-year-old. Ariana, who scored a summer hit with “The Way” (above) and is on the verge of another with “Baby I” is the first female to debut at No. 1 since Ke$ha in 2010. She’s also been the subject of celebrity gossip news, courtesy of alleged flirty texts from Justin Bieber . Madonna At #1 Again With MDNA

Madge’s 12th studio album sells 359,000 copies, giving singer her fifth straight #1. By Gil Kaufman Madonna Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Madonna will retain her claim to the pop throne next week when her 12th studio album, MDNA, debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. This will be the singer’s fifth straight #1 album, and its sales of 359,000 were more than enough to outpace the #2 debut from fellow veteran Lionel Richie . Richie marks a return to the upper reaches of the charts with his hook-up with country artists on Tuskegee, which sold 199,000 copies, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. With her latest chart-topper, Madonna, 53, joins Barbra Streisand as the only woman to top the Billboard albums chart at least eight times; Streisand holds the record with a total of nine #1 albums. Two seasoned rock bands also debut in the top 10, with Shinedown hitting #4 with Amaryllis (106,000) and the Used returning to the charts at #8 with Vulnerable (32,000). The rest of the top 10: Adele , 21 (#3, 121,000), “Hunger Games” soundtrack (#5, 64,000), One Direction , Up All Night (#6, 46,000), the deluxe version of Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream (#7, 33,000), Bruce Springsteen , Wrecking Ball (#9, 28,000) and NOW 41 (#10, 25,000). The week after they debuted at #3, the Shins drop 11 spots to #14 as business for Port of Morrow dipped by 71 percent to 22,000. Meanwhile, noisemeisters the Mars Volta land at #15 with their latest, Noctourniquet (21,000). All-American Rejects bop in at #18 with Kids in the Street (18,000), and last season’s “American Idol” winner, Scotty McCreery , got a big boost after appearing on the show last week, sending his debut, Clear as Day, up 46 spots to #21 as sales picked up by 172 percent to 16,000. Look for a new #1 next week as Nicki Minaj ‘s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded crashes the charts. Related Artists Madonna

Bruce Springsteen To End Adele’s Run At #1?

Early estimates predict the Boss’ Wrecking Ball will surpass 21 for top spot on week’s Billboard albums chart. By James Montgomery Bruce Springsteen Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images There’s been no other #1 album in 2012 besides Adele’s unstoppable 21 — and it hasn’t even been close — though all of that might change this week as Bruce Springsteen is poised to make a run at the top spot on the Billboard albums chart. According to industry site Hits Daily Double, Springsteen’s new Wrecking Ball disc is giving 21 its toughest competition to date in the battle for #1 on next week’s Top 200. With slightly more than half of retail data compiled, Adele has sold roughly 89,000 copies of her album, while Springsteen has sold nearly 82,000. Based on those early estimates, Hits is estimating Wrecking Ball will sell approximately 200,000 copies (Springsteen’s previous studio album, 2009’s Working on a Dream, bowed at #1 with sales of more than 223,000 copies), ending Adele’s run of 10 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard albums chart. The last record to sit at #1 besides 21 was Michael Bubl

Adele’s 21 Tops Albums Chart For 18th Time

Tim McGraw, Lamb of God also make appearances in top 10. By James Montgomery Adele’s 21 Photo: Columbia Records Hey, guess what? Adele is #1 on the Billboard albums chart again. Yes, for the 18th time, the British belter’s 21 claims the top spot, selling nearly 116,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album has now tied Garth Brooks’ Ropin’ the Wind for 18 non-consecutive weeks at #1; she needs just three more weeks atop the chart to move past the “Bodyguard” soundtrack and Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii, both of which notched 20 weeks at #1. As is usually the case, Adele makes it look easy. Her closest chart competition comes in the form of Tim McGraw ‘s Emotional Traffic, which scores the week’s biggest debut, opening at #2 with sales of nearly 68,000 copies. Lamb of God ‘s Resolution bows at #3, selling almost 53,000 copies. The 2012 Grammy Nominees compilation (more than 52,000 copies sold) and Ingrid Michaelson ‘s Human Again (nearly 40,000 copies sold) round out the top five. The 21st installment of the ubiquitous Kidz Bop series is next at #6, with sales of more than 33,000 copies, followed by former “American Idol” firecracker Kellie Pickler ‘s 100 Proof (more than 27,000 copies) at #7, Seal ‘s Soul 2 (slightly more than 27,000 copies) at #8, Drake ‘s Take Care (more than 26,000 copies) at #9 and Kari Jobe ‘s Where I Find You (nearly 25,000 copies) at #10. Outside the top 10, there are debuts from the expansive four-disc Bob Dylan tribute Chimes of Freedom, which bows at #11 with sales of more than 22,000 copies (the two-disc version opens at #39), and Lacuna Coil , whose Dark Adrenaline opens at #15 with sales of nearly 20,000 copies. On next week’s chart, Adele faces new challenges from the likes of Leonard Cohen ‘s Old Ideas and Lana Del Rey ‘s Born to Die . Related Videos MTV Unplugged: Adele Related Artists Adele

Adele Helps Push Music Biz To First Sales Jump Since 2004

Music sales posted a 3 percent sales increase last year, thanks in no small part to 21 . By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic Call it the Adele Effect: Music sales actually rose in 2011, the first time the industry has posted a gain in seven years. According to Nielsen SoundScan, overall sales were up a modest 3 percent last year, as consumers purchased some 458 million albums — digital downloads of albums rose 20 percent, to 103 million, while sales of compact discs sank nearly 6 percent, to 225 million — and downloaded more than 1.2 billion singles, a 9 percent increase from the previous year. It’s all a welcome change of pace for the music industry, which in recent years has been battered by double-digit declines in sales. And, while there are certainly mitigating factors that contributed to the sales gains — the RIAA’s ongoing antipiracy efforts, an increase of consumers with mobile devices, the rise of services like Spotify and Google Music — it certainly didn’t hurt that Adele released one of the biggest-selling albums in recent memory last year, not to mention a pair of much-downloaded singles. Her 21 album sold more than 5.8 million copies in 2011 — the most of any album since Usher’s Confessions in 2004 (which, incidentally, marks the last year the industry saw increases in total sales) — and her massive “Rolling in the Deep” has also sold some 5.8 million copies. She sold nearly 900,000 copies of her debut album, 19, last year, too. Big sellers like Lady Gaga ‘s Born This Way and Michael Bubl

Adele Starts 2012 Topping Billboard Albums Chart Once Again

Her 21 , which debuted nearly a year ago, sold more than 144,000 copies. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Getty Images New year, same story: Adele ‘s unstoppable 21 sold more than 144,000 copies to claim the top spot on the first Billboard albums chart of 2012, easily outpacing Drake ‘s Take Care, which landed at #2 with sales of nearly 72,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As it approaches the one-year anniversary of its release, 21 — which was 2011’s biggest seller by a huge margin — shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, with this week’s numbers, it has now sold some 5.8 million copies in the U.S., making it the best-selling album since Usher’s massive Confessions, which moved 7.9 million copies in 2004. Young Jeezy ‘s TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition holds strong at #3 on this week’s chart, selling more than 67,000 copies in its second week. Lady Antebellum ‘s Own the Night is up next at #4 with sales of nearly 54,000 copies. And buoyed by the chart-topping success of single “Sexy and I Know It,” LMFAO ‘s Sorry for Party Rocking leaps from #16 all the way up to #5. Florence and the Machine ‘s Ceremonials (sales of more than 47,000 copies), the Black Keys ‘ El Camino (more than 45,000), Coldplay ‘s Mylo Xyloto (more than 44,000), Rihanna ‘s Talk That Talk (more than 42,000) and the 40th installment of the ubiquitous Now collection (more than 41,000) round out the top 10. The week’s biggest debut belongs to Skrillex , whose new Bangarang EP opens at #19, with sales of nearly 24,000 copies. The Trent Reznor / Atticus Ross “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” soundtrack makes its chart debut at #44, selling more than 14,000 copies. And, in a true sign that the holidays are officially over, Canadian crooner Michael Bubl
