‘Killer Joe’ Promises To Be A Bloody Good Time

Matthew McConaughey opens up about his hit man character for MTV News’ Summer Movie Preview Week. By Kara Warner Thomas Haden Church and Matthew McConaughey in “Killer Joe” Photo: LD Distribution “Killer Joe” is the type of genre film you only need to know a few key details about to be intrigued. First, Matthew McConaughey plays a crazy contract killer. Second, the plot revolves around a desperate young man (Emile Hirsch) who plots to kill his mother with help from his family (Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon), who are asked to offer up their teenage daughter (Juno Temple) as a retainer to hire the hit man. Third, the film landed an NC-17 rating for all its gratuitous violence. Bonus highbrow fact: The seemingly crazy story is based on Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts’ award-winning play. See what we mean about intriguing? When MTV News caught up with McConaughey recently, we asked him to set aside the film’s outrageous factors for a moment in order to name a few of his character’s redeemable qualities, aside from the killer-for-hire part. “He keeps to himself until he has to go do his business. He’s a very structured guy,” McConaughey said. “Everyone understands, on the up-and-up, what his plan is and how he’ll go through with it. It’s a very clean business, and he doesn’t want anyone else to know anything they shouldn’t know that could implicate them. He’s very, very clean and he’s a very good businessman. He just happens to have a job that’s kinda heinous and absurd.” The “Lincoln Lawyer” and “Magic Mike” said the fun of the film is in not knowing when to laugh or gasp — or both. “It’s a comedy, but everyone played it straight,” McConaughey explained. “It wasn’t a comedy where you played the joke. The situations are absurd. It’s a bit of a hyper-reality, like in some good Tarantino films — very violent, at the same time it’s very funny. It’s the kind of late laugh that you go, ‘I’m not supposed to be laughing, but I just found myself laughing, and is it OK for me to laugh at that? ‘Cause I just did.’ I like it.” It’s Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies . Justin Bieber Reveals Believe Release Date On ‘The Voice’

Plus: Ashley De La Rosa and RaeLynn are voted off the competition. By James Dinh Justin Bieber on “The Voice” Photo: NBC If you tuned into Tuesday night’s (April 17) episode of “The Voice,” then you caught a roller-coaster episode, with Justin Bieber teasing his “Boyfriend” video and announcing that his new album, Believe, will hit stores June 19 and two more competitors biting the dust. Rocking a simple jacket, jeans and gold pendent, a charismatic Bieber was welcomed to the “Voice” stage with overwhelming applause. “I’m really happy to be here, and I think you guys are going to really love the video,” he told host Carson Daly of the “Boyfriend” sneak peek. In the clip, Bieber is seen whispering the slick tune to a girl as shots of an icy realm flash. With a guitar in hand, the singer strikes a pose before a gleaming white sphere. Beliebers will see the first live performance of the track when he hits the “Voice” stage during the season finale. Bieber also took time to jokingly chat with judge Adam Levine about a “supergroup” the two were planning, telling Daly, “Basically, we were going to do this supergroup, but he released his single, I released my single,” to which Adam replied, “I’m sorry I quit, man.” Beyond the Biebs’ announcement, the NBC series also had some unfortunate news to share, revealing the two contestants who were given the boot from the singing competition. Following the previous night’s “instant eliminations,” Daly explained that the highest vote-getters would advance to the semifinals, with the remaining set of duos battling it out for their judge’s save. And it was nothing but a relief for Chris Mann (Team Christina) and Jermaine Paul (Team Blake) when they were revealed as the highest voted of the week. Shortly after the commercial break, Team Christina’s Ashley De La Rosa and Lindsey Pavao went head-to-head, causing Miss Aguilera to shed some tears. While De La Rosa took on Lady Gaga’s “Yo
