Sid Ceasar Dies; TV Great Was 91

In sad news from the world of television today, Sid Caesar, one of the groundbreaking sketch-comedy artists in the history of the medium, has died at age 91. His friend Larry King revealed Caesar’s passing on Twitter a little while ago. King writes, “Sorry to learn about the passing of Sid Caesar – a dear friend, a comic genius & an American classic – there will never be another one like him.” A New York-born nightclub performer, he helped to usher in the TV revolution with a 90-minute Saturday night variety program, Your Show of Shows . That was 1950 if you can believe that. The live TV broadcast became a hit that lasted four years and later morphed into Caesar’s Hour , from 1954-1957. His writing staff included Woody Allen, Neil Simon, Mel Brooks, and Larry Gelbart, but the real star of the show was Sid himself, and he worked at it. Caesar was prolific but had no interest in small talk. He once said the hardest part of the show was being himself and wishing the audience good evening.
