Jessa Duggar watched the Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball team defeat the Vanderbilt Commodores in Fayetteville, AR over the weekend. After the game, Jessa, her husband Ben Seewald, and a whole slew of siblings hit up Braum’s Ice Cream – a Southwest staple. A lover of social media, Jessa snapped a selfie, uploaded it to her Instagram, and was met with an unexpected question – who paid for the cones? Allow us to explain: Over the summer Seewald moved in with the Duggars . It was a surprising move, considering the family’s strict rules about pre-marital sex, but patriarch Jim Bob permitted the arrangement because he’d hired Ben to do some work on his land, and Jessa and Ben had agreed to sleep in separate rooms. Months went by, Jessa and Ben got married , and they moved into their own home. The only thing that hasn’t changed in their lives is Ben’s employment status. After 10 weeks of marriage, he’s still working for his father-in-law. Some fans seem to feel that there can’t really be that much work to do around casa de Duggar, and the time has probably come for Ben to find a real job with a real paycheck. Perhaps not surprisingly, some have taken to sharing this view on Jessa’s Instagram page: “Hey Jessa, has Ben gotten a job yet?” wrote one follower. When another user pointed out that “Ben works for the Duggars,” the fan shot back, “Let me rephrase. Jessa, does Ben have a real job yet, outside of doing chores on the Duggar compound?” “Compound” is a good word for it, as “home” seems insufficient to describe a unit that once housed 21 people, but while there are lots of Duggars and lots of land to tend to, the fact that able-bodied Ben seems to be making a career out of serving as Jim Bob’s gofer is a bit strange. There’s little that goes on in the Duggar’s lives that escapes the notice of their millions of fans, and we suspect the Ben’s employment situation will continue to gain attention for as long as he remains Jim Bob’s employee.
