Remembering Trayvon Martin On What Would’ve Been His 24th Birthday [Video]

Source: Allison Joyce/Getty Images / Getty February 5, 2019, Marks Trayvon Martin’s 24th Birthday Today would have been Trayvon Martin’s birthday. The 17-year-old Florida teen who was gunned down in 2012 would’ve been 24-years-old today if his life wasn’t tragically cut short. His mother Sybrina Fulton recently spoke at Oregon State University and spoke on the need for unity. Sybrina who helms the Trayvon Martin foundation told students “we need to learn how to all get along together.” “The time is always right to do the right thing,” said Sybrina. “My disappointment, my sadness, my hurt, my pain, I put all of that in my foundation.” Trayvon’s being remembered today by several celebrities including Ava Duvernay who’s using his passing as a teachable moment about white privilege. When people ask me what white privilege is…. Imagine if this was a white boy in a hoodie with a bag of skittles who was just trying to walk home. https://t.co/ty8ogrzDtC — Ava DuVernay (@ava) February 5, 2019 Others are also pointing out the timing of Liam Neeson admitting that he wanted to kill a random black man after his friend was raped on what would’ve been the teen’s birthday. We are discussing Liam Neeson’s comment about wanting to kill any Black person the same time of Trayvon Martin’s Birthday. — Preston Mitchum (@PrestonMitchum) February 5, 2019 Wow. R.I.P. Trayvon Martin, we will never forget. Wishing a Happy Birthday to our Brother Trayvon Martin who would’ve turned 24 today. RIP. pic.twitter.com/xsYbclHmSn — COMMON (@common) February 5, 2019 Today Trayvon Martin should be turning 24. This is one milestone on a long list of “should haves” Trayvon will never get to enjoy We honor him by continuing to fight for justice, the fight for Black boys & girls — with purpose & intentionality, w/ love & courage. Rest in power. pic.twitter.com/kKKFoPxfJc — CiCi Adams (@CiCiAdams_) February 5, 2019

Sandra Bland Museum Exhibit Is Latest To Use Art To Honor Police Deaths Of Unarmed Black People

Original post:

A new museum exhibit honoring Sandra Bland has gone on display in Texas just in time for Black History Month. The Houston Museum of African-American Culture’s exhibit, which opened Saturday, celebrates the life of the woman who was found dead in a Texas jail cell three days after a controversial police traffic stop in 2015. SEE ALSO: Sandra Bland’s Family Settles Wrongful Death Suit For $1.9 Million The exhibit, which tells Bland’s story partly through photographs, is like a walk through time for Geneva Reed-Veal , Bland’s mother, according to KTRK-TV . “You come out of this room and have a mix of happiness and sadness at the same time,” she said. “People seeing this exhibit should say to themselves hold on, I’m going to think a little differently about the way I do things — with my interactions with everyone but more so police officers.” Sandra Bland exhibit opens at Houston Museum of African American Culture https://t.co/h4NmVhLth5 pic.twitter.com/y3zSNIKWza — TheUrbanNewz (@TheUrbanNewz) February 4, 2018 A central piece of the exhibit is a makeshift car to watch the video of the traffic stop that escalated to an arrest. “We hope this exhibition will bring our multicultural audience to a better understanding of the fear African Americans have toward encounters with the police,” John Guess , the museum’s CEO who also curated the exhibit, told Houston Style Magazine . Art is an effective medium to express the pain, anger and resolve to end police violence against innocent Black lives. Here are some other examples of how art has been used for those purposes. SMFH: Trayvon Martin Killer George Zimmerman Says He Wants To Feed Jay Z To Alligators

Jacob Langston/Orlando Sentinel/TNS via Getty Images GTFOH…. George Zimmerman Threatens Jay Z The eternally wicked waste of space that is George Zimmerman is apparently none too pleased with Jay Z and he’s speaking up about it. The sociopathic, sick, scumbag that’s somehow still alive and well in Florida is BIG mad at Hov over a forthcoming Trayvon Martin doc. As previously reported Jay announced that he’s producing a documentary on the 2012 slaying of the unarmed teen. According to Zimmerman, however, the docuseries’ executive producer Michael Gasparro has been “harassing” his family and he wants to “beat Jay-Z” and feed him to “an alligator” because of it. SURE. The deplorbale demon spoke with TheBlast about the upcoming doc and told them that two weeks ago a production team made unannounced visits to his parents and uncle’s homes in Florida in an attempt to get them on camera. He also added that if the harassment doesn’t stop, he’s got plans for the production team. In a chilling reference to the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, Zimmerman grimly tells us “I know how to handle people who f*** with me, I have since February 2012.” XactpiX/Splash News HOW…IS…HE…STILL…SPEAKING??? The Blast adds that the detestable, petulant pile of debris seems especially upset over money he claims has been paid to his ex-wife over her alleged participation in the documentary. By contrast, the production crew has allegedly refused to pay his parents or family members. “Anyone who f***s with my parents will be fed to an alligator.” Sure George, whatever you say, George. Please continue to make criminal threats so you can hopefully get some jail time George. Joe Burbank/Orlando Sentinel via AP, Pool Where are you when we need you karma?

Failed Ex-Howard University Medical Student Suspected In Shooting Scare

Read the original post:

A former student who flunked out of Howard Medical School is suspected of sparking a scare about an active shooter on campus earlier this week at the HBCU in Northwest Washington, D.C.,  according to  ABC 7-WJLA . RELATED:  ‘Active Shooter’ Reported On Howard University Campus Details are still sparse about the incident that sparked calls to the police about 12:04 p.m. Tuesday, but Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham told the television news station that they were not a hoax. “It seems like the initial caller called because they received information from a third party so they called in good faith,” he said.     Stephen Whetstone of Howard’s Health Sciences section told the news station that school officials were aware of an angry former medical student, whose name has not been released to the public. The man had flunked out and had made numerous threats. “He had made threats to come back and shoot up the testing center at Stokes Library,” Whetstone told the news station, “so he had made that kind of threat and I think he was pretty much targeting his former classmates.” The man, whose ex-girlfriend is a student on campus, reportedly had taken out a restraining order. He allegedly warned that if she alerted authorities about the threats that her sister and grandmother would be targeted, the report said. More than two hours after news of an active shooter was on campus, Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick said the school was “all clear.” Some students complained they had hoped for more crisis updates from school officials at the time of the incident, which raised concern after a man was arrested recently for making death threats against Howard students . It also raised concern because festivities for the school’s homecoming, which draws a large crowd, begins Oct. 20. Editorial: When They Only See Us As Ni**ers

Getty Let’s get this out of the way first: LeBron James, regardless of his actual skill on a basketball court, deserves more adoration and respect than Michael Jordan for being someone willing to speak about racism in America. Michael Jordan strayed away from politics, opting to infamously insist that Republicans buy sneakers too. Jordan was silent during the L.A. Riots. Dismissive while black bodies lay slain in the streets, boys in socks killed over a pair of Jordans. We need to be able to face and confront the fact that Jordan failed black people, and repeat that fact with the same fervor that we use to defend his status as the greatest basketball player of all time. LeBron James has spoken out about Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown and now, with the biggest NBA Finals of all time looming, he’s had to speak about racism that’s quite literally greeted him at his own doorstep. Some time in the last few days, LeBron James had to Facetime his kids from his Bay Area hotel as he prepares for the NBA Finals. He had to explain to them why someone spray-painted NI**ER on their Los Angeles front gate. Of course LeBron James is familiar with being the target of racism. He remembers the overseer-like letter of disappointment Cavs owner Dan Gilbert sent when James made his decision to go to Miami. He still grits his teeth when Phil Jackson calling his team of businessmen a “posse” is brought up. He knows what it’s like to hear slurs when he’s on the court, raining down from fans who ironically paid an exorbitant amount of money to see him. And he lives in an era where videos of police killing unarmed black people has become as constant as knowing the White House is currently overrun by white supremacists and racists. The Akron-native was born into an environment in which the country would be happy to label him a ni**er. He was poor. He didn’t know his father. And if he were gunned down at the age of 12 by cops who saw him as a threatening adult the country would simply justify his death and move on. If LeBron James never played basketball and instead waited tables, he would be that ni**er who got an order wrong. If he held up a gas station he would have been a ni**er who deserved to go to jail. But he’s not. Things should be different, right? LeBron James is the type of black man that we’re told doesn’t face racism anymore. Respectability politics say that LeBron James is above prejudice. He pulled himself up by his bootstraps and became a multimillionaire. A businessman. A one-man conglomerate. And in his 14 years in the NBA his biggest scandal was choosing to go play for a different team in 2010 — a televised event whose proceeds went to charity. He’s the black man who’s held up to a standard of exception. If we were all like LeBron James we would escape being killed by cops, going to jail and certainly being called ni**ers. Except. That’s all bullsh*t. Racism doesn’t care about circumstance. Racism is a meritless killer, seeing only color and violence. Even as I write this, I find out that someone left a noose at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. The type of place black kids have been told to pull their pants up and attend more often. There’s no escape. There never has been, especially in this iteration of America. They will call us ni**ers no matter what we do, and contrary to what we have been told, they will call us ni**ers louder the more successful we become. Denying this fact is lying to ourselves about the country we live in. In a few short hours, LeBron James will embark on a campaign to win the NBA Finals and maybe become the greatest basketball player of all time. And no matter how great he is, he will still be considered a ni**er by a wide swath of people in this country. Yet and still, he’ll stand tall and call himself King James. Because black greatness isn’t for them. It’s for us and their words can’t do a damn thing about it.
