George Michael Pleads Guilty To Drug Charges

Troubled singer receives six-month suspension of driver’s license following July car crash. By Gil Kaufman George Michael appears at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court in London on Tuesday Photo: Danny Martindale/ WireImage George Michael pleaded guilty on Tuesday (August 24) to driving under the influence of drugs and possession of pot in a London courtroom, earning the former Wham! singer a six-month suspension of his driving privileges and a threat of prison time if he is caught behind the wheel while under the influence again. According to , the troubled former pop star (born Georgios Panayiotou), 47, admitted that he was driving while on drugs when his car crashed into a photo shop on July 4 as he was returning from a gay pride event. Police said they found Michael “spaced out” and sweating profusely with his pupils dilated after his car smashed into a Snappy Snaps shop in North London near his home in the early morning hours. The car’s engine was still running when officers arrived, but Michael had to be woken up. Later tests showed that he had taken a “therapeutic quantity” of the antidepressant gamma-hydroxybutyrate, a.k.a. “the date rape” drug GBH, which can leave people powerless and groggy. During his 15-minute court appearance, Michael entered a plea and Judge Robin McPhee banned the singer from driving for six months, saying he could be sent to prison if he is busted again. “It is a serious matter,” McPhee said. “Your driving was extremely poor and there was an accident.” The judge noted that Michael already had one conviction on his record for a similar incident three years ago in which he was found slumped over the wheel of his car while blocking an intersection while driving under the influence. Heidi Montag Insists There Is No Sex Tape

Ex-husband Spencer Pratt explains why he is in Costa Rica, where she is vacationing. By Jocelyn Vena Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt (file) Photo: Chris Weeks/ Getty Images It has been a tumultuous few months for the duo formerly known as Speidi. Heidi Montag moved forward with a divorce from “Hills” co-star Spencer Pratt and subsequently tweeted to Lauren Conrad that her friend was correct about Spencer’s ill intentions . And this week, the two were spotted away from their California homes. TMZ cameras caught the pair, who have been sparring on Twitter, together in Costa Rica. Heidi apparently had intentions to spend some time away from Malibu in the wake of the split; Spencer, who reportedly followed her down there, spoke to People.com about why they happened to be in the same country. “I had to bring the puppies down and help them move in,” Pratt said about why he was spotted down there with his estranged wife. “[Heidi] thought I was going to leave, but I’m not. I didn’t want to get divorced … I have nothing in Malibu, I’m homeless, I’m nothing without her.” While there is still talk of a sex tape starring Heidi, she says that it does not actually exist. “Everything was calm and going smoothly with the divorce,” she said. “We were really getting along and it was amazing he was being so thoughtful to help me move. Then things turned. There is no sex tape that exists and there never was. Spencer is trying to drum up press. This is exactly why I wanted to divorce him in the first place.” Spencer insists that the footage does exist, and that he plans to release it. For now, Heidi is just trying to look out for herself. “I’m going to leave the hotel and get a house because Spencer won’t leave me alone and won’t go back to Malibu right now,” the former reality star explained. “It’s just too hard. I still love him, but I can’t stand what he’s doing.” Related Photos A Speidi Web Of Love

M.I.A.’s New Album Is ‘A Turd,’ Diplo Tweets

But websites who take that comment seriously are ‘trippin’,’ producer says. By James Montgomery M.I.A. Photo: Chris Weeks/ WireImage When MTV News spoke to Diplo way back in March, he told us that M.I.A. ‘s new album was going to be “heavy” and “weird.” Turns out, he also thinks it’s also “a turd.” That’s according to Dip himself, who was asked by a fan via Twitter on Wednesday about why, at the end of the track “Tell Me Why” “does it sound like a toilet just flushed …?” “Cuz the rest of [the] album is a turd,” he tweeted back. Of course, his response quickly made the rounds on the Internet, ending up on seemingly disparate sites like Oh No They Didn’t and Pitchfork . Diplo then spent the rest of the day tweeting that the sites in question were “trippin’.” “I think when there are no Wavves vs. Crystal Castles 12″s or open [letters] from Conor Oberst and Gucci Mane, @pitchforkmedia has 2 reach a lil 4 news.” But whether or not he was just kidding around when he called M.I.A.’s ///Y/&#92 a “turd,” Diplo has had a rather interesting relationship with the album. Last month, he tweeted that his own “3 trax are slammin'” but that the rest of the record — which was produced mainly by Rusko, Blaqstarr and Switch — “sounds like Skinny Puppy and gives me nightmares.” He also added a pair of sad-face emoticons to further illustrate his point. And back in May, in the now-infamous New York Times Magazine feature on M.I.A. , he told reporter Lynn Hirschberg that “for me, making this record wasn’t easy. In the past, we were a team. But Maya wanted to show us how much she didn’t need us. In the end, Maya is postmodern; she can’t really make music or art that well, but she’s better than anyone at putting crazy ideas into motion. She knows how to manipulate, how to withhold, how to get what she wants.” An e-mail to a rep for Diplo was not responded to by press time. What do you think of M.I.A.’s album? M.I.A. Debuts New Song ‘Steppin’ Up’ On Blog

Rattling, dissonant track features tool sounds and a club-friendly beat. By James Montgomery M.I.A. Photo: Chris Weeks/ WireImage Though her album leaked over the weekend, M.I.A. is still promoting her upcoming ///Y/ album (officially due July 13) the old-fashioned way: one song at a time. Over the past few months — through both her official website and her blog over on NEET Recordings — she’s premiered “Born Free” (complete with gruesome, politically charged video), first single “XXXO” and the possible New York Times dis track “I’m a Singer,” which, while not actually on her album, is still a new song, so it counts in our books. And on Wednesday (June 16), she did it again, taking to Neet to debut “Steppin’ Up,” a rattling, dissonant track that would sound equally at home in the club or your neighborhood Jiffy Lube (dig those pneumatic tool samples!). “Stepping up in the club/ All tooled up like a thug,” she sings on the hook. “Rubba dub dub dub/ Aladdin no kiddin’, boy, I need a rub.” Along with the song, M.I.A. also revealed more of the eye-popping, seizure-inducing artwork that’s become a trademark of her new album promotion. When clicked on, the image takes visitors to iTunes, where they can purchase “Steppin’ Up,” along with remixes of “XXXO,” including the one featuring Jay-Z that debuted online last week. As of Wednesday, M.I.A.’s label, Interscope, had not announced whether or not they intend to move the release date of ///Y/ forward from July 13 in light of the leak. MTV News’ e-mail to a spokesperson for the label was not responded to by press time. Which of M.I.A.’s new songs is your favorite so far? Share your reviews in the comments. Related Artists M.I.A.
