Rattling, dissonant track features tool sounds and a club-friendly beat. By James Montgomery M.I.A. Photo: Chris Weeks/ WireImage Though her album leaked over the weekend, M.I.A. is still promoting her upcoming ///Y/ album (officially due July 13) the old-fashioned way: one song at a time. Over the past few months — through both her official website and her blog over on NEET Recordings — she’s premiered “Born Free” (complete with gruesome, politically charged video), first single “XXXO” and the possible New York Times dis track “I’m a Singer,” which, while not actually on her album, is still a new song, so it counts in our books. And on Wednesday (June 16), she did it again, taking to Neet to debut “Steppin’ Up,” a rattling, dissonant track that would sound equally at home in the club or your neighborhood Jiffy Lube (dig those pneumatic tool samples!). “Stepping up in the club/ All tooled up like a thug,” she sings on the hook. “Rubba dub dub dub/ Aladdin no kiddin’, boy, I need a rub.” Along with the song, M.I.A. also revealed more of the eye-popping, seizure-inducing artwork that’s become a trademark of her new album promotion. When clicked on, the image takes visitors to iTunes, where they can purchase “Steppin’ Up,” along with remixes of “XXXO,” including the one featuring Jay-Z that debuted online last week. As of Wednesday, M.I.A.’s label, Interscope, had not announced whether or not they intend to move the release date of ///Y/ forward from July 13 in light of the leak. MTV News’ e-mail to a spokesperson for the label was not responded to by press time. Which of M.I.A.’s new songs is your favorite so far? Share your reviews in the comments. Related Artists M.I.A.
