Career-spanning set features icons’ newest tracks and older fan favorites. By Mary J. DiMeglio Radiohead’s Thom Yorke performs during day two of the Coachella music festival Photo: Getty Images INDIO, California — Radiohead brought their huge sound and eye-candy backdrop to the Coachella festival’s polo fields Saturday night in a fairly mellow set, heavy with cuts from their latest offering, The King of Limbs . Amidst their newest tracks — including “Morning Mr Magpie,” “Lotus Flower” and “Give Up the Ghost” — the British rock icons sprinkled tunes spanning much of their catalog, from Kid A rave-up “Idioteque” to In Rainbows’ “Bodysnatchers” and “15 Step.” Of “Karma Police,” their first classic selection of the night, singer Thom Yorke said, “You know those people who are only talking to you because they want something from you? You need to take a cold shower afterwards.” Radiohead, who last graced the polo fields in 2004, are also headlining Bonnaroo in June. The fivesome answered calls for an encore with longtime fan favorite “Lucky,” “Reckoner” and the alternately soaring and intense “Paranoid Android.” Coachella’s second day also featured Bon Iver, David Guetta, the Shins and A$AP Rocky. In response to last year’s event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — the festival is experimenting with hosting the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22. The Black Keys, Swedish House Mafia and Pulp rocked Friday’s chilly opening day . Today’s (April 15) third and final day brings Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg (rumored to contain an appearance by the late Nate Dogg as a hologram ), Florence and the Machine, Justice, Calvin Harris and the reunited At the Drive-In. Singer Steven Tyler promises to bring ‘a little bit of 1975 back.’ By Gil Kaufman Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler Photo: Getty Images As if guitarist Joe Perry’s surprise “Happy Birthday” serenade to singer and judge Steven Tyler on “American Idol” last week weren’t proof enough that all is good in Aerosmith land, on Wednesday, the veteran rockers confirmed they’re releasing their long-awaited studio album this summer. They didn’t reveal the title of the album, their first featuring new material since 2001’s Just Push Play, but singer Tyler told Reuters that after a few years of turmoil and tension things are (relatively) back to normal. “The camaraderie’s there, there’s some songs that are new rock, and old rock and middle-of-the-road rock, and blues, piano,” he said. “Joe Perry singing a couple of songs, I’m playing the drums, Joey sings, just all kinds of stuff.” Tyler, 64, added that they have re-teamed with longtime producer Jack Douglas in order to bring “a little bit of 1975 back.” Rolling Stone reported that Tyler said the band is two songs from the finish line and some of the titles completed so far include “Legendary Child,” “Beautiful” and “Out Go the Lights.” The release date was not announced, but the band — who arrived at the press conference via motorcycle, a white Lamborghini, taxi and rickshaw — promised to have the disc ready around the time of the kickoff of their recently announced North American “Global Warming” tour, which begins June 16 in Minneapolis. “You’re going to get some new songs from the new album and some old songs from the old albums and you’re going to get new us and old us, and we’re just going to go out and rock your world,” Tyler said. The Boston-bred icons have been trying to get together to record their 15th studio album for several years, but their efforts were interrupted by a variety of ailments, stage accidents involving Tyler (as well as his rehab stint in 2009) and enmity that was stirred up by the singer’s decision to sign on as a judge for “Idol.” But despite the grumbling from Perry when Tyler announced his decision to take a seat next to Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson in 2010, the motor-mouthed vocalist said the exposure has helped the group reach a whole new audience. “The music that we write, fortunately it’s been seductive to all genres of people,” he said. “There’s going to be kids who are going to get introduced to Aerosmith all over again, and there’s a bunch of new music that we’re taking a risk and putting out. It’s kind of futuristic rock, all the way across the board, we’re just good for that.” Related Artists Aerosmith

Afrojack, Steve Aoki, Lil Jon, Benny Benassi join Guetta onstage on Miami fest’s final day. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta and Afrojack at Ultra Music Fest Photo: Getty Images MIAMI — Trance and electro house music reigned supreme at the final day of Ultra Music Festival, closing out the annual three-day dance music mega-fest that saw more than 200,000 people walk through the gates at Miami’s Bayfront Park. Sunday, Carl Cox handed over the Cocoon’s “mega-structure” stage to Dutch trance-music icon Armin van Buuren , who continued his globe-spanning celebration of the 550th episode of his “A State of Trance” radio show, streaming epic, dazzling sets of some of his larger-than-life trance-music friends. Gareth Emery, ATB, Ferry Corsten, Tritonal, and Sander van Doorn were but some of the big stars who had fans packing Cocoon right up to the stage’s back gates. Earlier in the day, 2012 MTV Woodies closing act Steve Aoki set the Ultra Main Stage ablaze with his driving electro-metal house show, and a few of his recent Wonderland album collaborators helped him celebrate the occasion. Lil Jon launched the set into overdrive early, joining Aoki for “Turbulence” and more, and singers Polina, and Alyssa Palmer all hit the stage to perform alongside Aoki. Before ending his set with an inflatable boat ride across a sea of tens of thousands of fans, as he traditionally does, Aoki caked two lucky fans in the front row of the audience — with dexterity, we’d like to add, right in the face from more than seemingly 15 feet away. Sunday night marked the UMF return of dance-music king , certainly the biggest crossover brand in EDM. While one might assume that after a throttling set by Knife Party followed by excellent performances by Kaskade and Fedde Le Grand, fans might have been a bit fatigued by then. If they were, they didn’t show it. “Can I hear my party people?” Guetta asked as he took the stage. The audience roared back as he launched into Alesso’s remix of Guetta’s “Titanium.” Notably, after the French superstar began a mix of little broski Afrojack’s “Can’t Stop Me Now,” Afrojack, Lil Jon, Aoki and Italian DJ/producer (and Madonna MDNA collaborator) Benny Benassi all joined their friend onstage, causing pandemonium. They posed for a group photo for the history books, and the set continued, only with the volume lower. “Every time I play a track at Ultra, it brings me luck!” Guetta told the audience. “And I’m going to start a new electronic label, and this is the first track on the label. “It’s with Nicky Romero , and it’s called ‘Metropolis,’ ” Guetta continued, before pumping the volume back up and letting the audience take in the electro-house banger that both he and Romero have been previewing in their sets recently. Throughout his set, Guetta maintained a bouncing tide of tens of thousands of screaming fans with his typical ease. There were a couple of new stadium house tracks in addition to known crowd-pleasers like Swedish House Mafia’s “Greyhound,” with the addition of Example’s “Changed the Way You Kissed Me” vocal, and Avicii’s “Le7els,” with Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” vocal. Before ending his set with a remix of “Turn Me On,” his single with Nicki Minaj , and finally “Without You,” his Usher hit, Guetta turned down the volume again and asked folks to take out their cell phones. As a sea of small lit-up screens formed around the UMF Main Stage, he made a remark that would underscore just how big the Ultra Music Festival and electronic dance music are in 2012. “Wow! Thousands and thousands and thousands of people partying together feeling like one,” Guetta remarked. “Do you realize what’s going on in America? How our music is taking over? “I never imagined that one day this would happen,” he added. “But this is only the beginning, right?” Share your Miami Music Week exploits with us in the comments section!
