How Cringe-Worthy Was The First Harry Potter Movie?

Joined by series star Rupert Grint at the British Embassy’s Creative Content Summit, Harry Potter series producer David Heyman looked back on 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone , the first film in the lucrative J.K. Rowling boy wizard franchise, and revealed which parts now make him “want to cringe.” “The visual effects industry developed substantially over the 11 to 12 years of making the films. I look at some of the first film [made in 2001] and want to cringe,” he said, adding that later films in the series marked vast improvements on the screen and in the franchise’s behind the scenes technical infrastructure. Heyman also had issues with Warner Bros.’ merchandising campaign tied to the first film, reports Wired: He went on to say that for the first film there was so much merchandising that it was “shocking.” He said that he knew that Warner Bros. had gone “too far” when he saw Harry Potter toilet paper. However, since then, Warner Bros. has reined it in and produced a “really elevated, high-range program.” At least the studio didn’t go for Americanizing the very British tale — so British, Voldemort and Rowling made it into the Olympic Opening Ceremony — which Heyman says the suits wanted to do at one point: “Heyman was thankful that the movie franchise retained the Britishness of the books, after some movie execs initially considered moving the story to the United States with ‘cheerleaders and the likes’ but he said ‘that never rang true.'” [ Wired via Movie City News ]

‘Harry Potter’ Producer ‘Can’t Wait To Read’ J.K. Rowling’s Writing

‘She delivers when she’s ready and that’s it,’ David Heyman tells MTV News about the author’s next project. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe, J.K. Rowling, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage When it comes to singling out the one person most responsible for the “Harry Potter” films actually getting made, author J.K. Rowling has long credited producer David Heyman for convincing her that the big screen was the right way to go. Now, with the final movie, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” just a day from hitting theaters, Rowling can have her pick of projects. But while she has admitted to writing recently, she won’t say what specifically, and her Pottermore website is still a mystery. According to Heyman, it’s likely she’ll try to keep it things top-secret for as long as possible. “One of the gifts of ‘Harry Potter’ [success] for her, and I suppose for me in some ways, is it’s bought us time. I know that when she was writing the first few ‘Harry Potter,’ the pressure to deliver the fourth and fifth — but particularly the fourth — on a schedule, was difficult and traumatic in some ways, and it wasn’t pleasurable,” Heyman told MTV News. “Now, she doesn’t have that pressure. She finishes when she is ready to finish. She delivers when she’s ready and that’s it. She’s writing and I’m sure there’ll be something and I can’t wait to read it.” Though Heyman played coy on whether he already knows what Rowling’s next project will be, he said he would support her in whatever she ventures into. In fact, he seemed ready to follow wherever she might lead him. “For me, I really want to be involved in adapting Jo’s fiction,” Heyman said. “If she does write another ‘Potter’ book, I will be there to work on it. It’s been a fantastic thing to be a part of, a real privilege. But really, it all begins with Jo, so if it’s not Jo, there’s no point.” Would you like to see J.K. ‘Harry Potter’ Films Could All Get 3-D Theatrical Releases, Producers Hint

‘I suspect the studio is going to be reluctant to let it die,’ David Heyman tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. “Harry Potter” producers may have ditched plans to release “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” in 3-D last November, but they haven’t abandoned bringing three dimensions to the film. The flick is currently being converted to 3-D for a Blu-ray release . What’s more, we just might see the rest of the franchise get the 3-D treatment too. “We’re doing 3-D for the DVD of ‘7, Part 1,’ and there’s been no discussion of anything else yet,” producer David Heyman told MTV News recently. “But I suspect the studio is going to be reluctant to let it die, and if there’s an opportunity to maybe enrich … ” Heyman left it at that, but those hints jibe with what he told us as far back as March 2010 , when he said of converting the entire series, “I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.” For now, filmmakers are racing to finish “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” ahead of the July release and working on the conversion of the first part for the Blu-ray. “We’re very pleased with the way ‘Part 1’ is going — the 3-D for the Blu-ray,” producer David Barron said. “It’s really exciting, really involved.” “I was surprised at how wonderful it is,” Heyman added. “It is different in some ways [than the theatrical release], but it’s enriching.” Additionally, they’re continuing to work on theatrical 3-D effects for “Part 1,” a process that has not yet been finished. “We haven’t completed the first part in 3-D for film release, for theatrical,” Barron said. “The quality is quite different,” Heyman explained. “It’s much easier, in a way, to do 3-D for a smaller screen for a bigger screen.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
