20 TV Characters Who’d Make Better Movie Superheroes Than Sabrina the Teenage Witch

You may have heard the news that Sony plans a big-screen adaptation of Sabrina the Teenage Witch , the animated series that yielded the Melissa Joan Hart cult TV favorite from the ’90s. This time, though? She’s a superhero . “The live action film will be an origin story in the vein of Spider-Man , about a young girl coming to terms with her remarkable powers,” writes Mike Fleming at Deadline. Of course. I guess it’ll work, but I can think of at least 20 TV characters off the top of my head whom I’d sooner see grappling with hero issues: 20 . Omar Little 19 . Erica Kane 18 . Special Agent Dale Cooper 17 . The Fonz 16 . George Costanza 15 . Diane Chambers 14 . Brandon Walsh 13 . Columbo 12 . J.R. Ewing 11 . Kenny Powers ( obviously ) 10 . Butters 9 . Laura Ingalls Wilder 8 . Rudy Huxtable 7 . George Jefferson 6 . Sam the Butcher 5 . Lou Grant 4 . & 3 . Sanford & Son 2 . Carmela Soprano 1 . Squiggy Who else? [ Deadline ]

One Life to Live and All My Children: Axed by ABC

The future of soap operas is officially bleaker than that of Lindsay Lohan’s movie career, following the decision by ABC yesterday to cancel One Life to Live and All My Children . The daytime dramas were on the air for 43 years and 40 years, respectively, and will be replaced by a pair of horrifically-named talk shows: The Chew , featuring Mario Batali; and The Revolution , starring Tim Gunn. ABC’s Daytime President, Brian Frons, justified the move by saying “we are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days.” The most famous star on either show, Susan Lucci, responded to the news thusly: “It’s been a fantastic journey. I loved playing Erica Kane and working with [show creator] Agnes Nixon and all the incredible people involved with All My Children . I’m looking forward to all kinds of new and exciting opportunities.” One Life to Live will go off the air in January, three months after All My Children ‘s final episode in September.

End Of An Era: ABC Cancels All My Children And One Life To Live

It’s a wrap for Pine Valley, NY and Llanview, PA. ABC announced Thursday that the sun will set permanently in the fictional towns of Pine Valley and Llanview as All My Children and One Life to Live wrap up for good. AMC’s last episode – which was rumored last month to be on the horizon – will be in September, while OLTL will end in January 2012. “To honor the core, passionate audience and their rich history with our soaps,” both shows will conclude “in a manner that respects their legacies and the longstanding hopes of many of their viewers,” reads a press release from ABC. ABC executives point out to viewers that times are changing and say they were “guided by extensive research into what today’s daytime viewers want,” and blame, in part, “the changing viewing patterns of the audience” for the shake-up. All My Children began as a half-hour soap opera in 1970. One Life to Live began in 1968. Susan Lucci, who’s played the one soap opera character everybody knows – Erica Kane – was the first to issue a statement. “It’s been a fantastic journey,” she said in a statement. I’ve loved playing Erica Kane and working with [series creator] Agnes Nixon and all the incredible people involved with All My Children. I’m looking forward to all kinds of new and exciting opportunities.” Acting careers launched by All My Children including Josh Duhamel, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kelly Ripa, Mischa Barton and Amanda Seyfried; notable alums of One Life to Live include Laurence Fishburne, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayden Panettiere, Phylicia Rashad, Nathan Fillion, Marcia Cross, Judith Light, Ryan Phillippe, Blair Underwood and Brandon Routh.
