National Trust For Historic Preservation Launches #TellTheFullHistory Campaign For Black History Month

T he National Trust for Historic Preservation has been at the forefront of trying to protect landmarks across the country that are embedded in the fabric of Black history and are integral parts of American history as a whole. In observance of Black History Month, the nonprofit organization has launched a powerful campaign with the help of actors to spread awareness about the influence and importance of Black landmarks. The campaign—dubbed #TellTheFullHistory—features actors Phylicia Rashad , Tia Mowry-Hardrict , Aldis Hodge , and Marcus Scribner . In a video created for the campaign, each celebrity shares a personal story about an impactful experience that they’ve had or a personal connection to a historic landmark in an effort to illustrate how these places shaped our country. Hodge talks about the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The hotel was later transformed into the National Civil Rights Museum. Rashad highlights the Brainerd Institute which was a South Carolina-based educational institution for freed Africans during the Reconstruction era. Mowry-Hardrict talks about her grandmother’s journey to America and Scribner discusses the influence of the West Angeles Church in California. “This month and every month, we at the National Trust for Historic Preservation seek to tell the full history. By saving African American places, we not only celebrate the tremendous impact that African Americans have made to the life of our nation, we transmit that impact to the present and into the future,” said Brent Leggs , Executive Director, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. “Having the voices of Phylicia Rashad, Tia Mowry-Hardrict and others join with us to advocate for preserving sites of Black history is powerful and a privilege. We all have places that tell our story and we hope by weaving together our narratives we can tell a fuller, truer, American story. We challenge you to tell us about a place that to matters to you.” The organization created a year-long campaign to preserve several places and has distributed $1.1 million in grants to different historic sites. Amongst the sites that received funding from the organization was Madam C.J. Walker ’s estate and the home where songstress Nina Simone grew up.  The grants were also used to expose youth to careers in preservation. Check out the #TellTheFullHistory video below. That Time Nancy Wilson Slayed On ‘The Cosby Show’

Read this article:

N ancy Wilson was a lot of things to many people: a daughter; a mother; a wife. But the legendary singer, who died Thursday at the age of 81, will surely go down in history as one of the greatest jazz performers of all time. However, there was another role that Wilson carved out during her lifetime: an actress. RIP Nancy Wilson, 12/13/2018. pic.twitter.com/aaltN7Pbfs — Channing Thomson (@CHANNINGPOSTERS) December 14, 2018 The woman with the inimitable golden voice starred or appeared in nearly two dozen TV shows over the course of more than four decades, according to IMDB . But it was one cameo appearance, in particular, that many on social media were remembering fondly Friday, when news of her death was officially announced. Wilson’s one-time role on “The Cosby Show” as Lorraine “NuNu” Kendall — the mother of Joseph Phillips’ character Martin, who was the husband of Lisa Bonet ‘s Denise Huxtable — was short, but oh-so-memorable for the way she broke into song mid-line to effortlessly display the vocals that made her such celebrated singer during a career that won her three Grammys spanning just about 60 years. My favorite Nancy Wilson memory will always be when she and Phylicia Rashad sang “Moody’s Mood For Love” together on the Cosby Show. Her voice was truly amazing. RIP. https://t.co/z5fcb4JhAd — Lauren Porter (@thelaurenline) December 14, 2018 The episode in question featured Martin parents visiting Lisa’s family home in Brooklyn and was called “Grampy and NuNu Visit the Huxtables.” It aired nearly 30 years ago on Nov. 30, 1989, and was about Lisa worrying about what her new in-laws would think of her and her family. The setting was the family home’s basement with Lisa’s father speaking with Martin’s father, who was played by legendary actor stage and TV actor Moses Gunn. The two were having a playful discussion about James Moody’s jazz standard, “I’m in the Mood for Love,” and begin signing it when Wilson, accompanied by Phylicia Rashad ‘s Clair Huxtable, strides onto the set, flashed her signature smile and belted out the rest of the song’s lyrics. That prompted Claire to join in as the two ladies walk down the stairs to join their husbands in song, bringing the studio audience to a resounding round of applause when she was finished. See the classic footage below. Rest in peace, Nancy Wilson. She will be missed. [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3840363″ overlay=”true”]

[ madamenoire ] From Marvin & Tammy To Big Sean & Jhene Aiko: 9 Modern Day Musical Duos There’s something to be said about the collaboration of two talented artists. And while many of the following dynamic duos might not achieve, legendary iconic status for their work together, they certainly had their moment or two. And for that, we have to give props. When I first heard that Big Sean and Jhene Aiko were coming together to work on an album, I was hesitant, to say the least. But after listening, I actually ended up buying a few of their songs. Something about the sound of their voices together just works. And they’re pretty adorable as a couple as well. People Aint Isht: Man Popped By One-Time For Having Forced Sex And Beating Elderly Nun Outside Church

This is disgusting. Man Beats And Has Forced Sex With Elderly Woman They need to throw him underneath the jail for attacking a woman who couldn’t defend herself. According to NY Daily News: A Pennsylvania teen was arrested Friday after he allegedly attacked and had forced sex with a 70-year-old nun in a church parking lot, authorities said. Andrew Bullock, 18, admitted to assaulting the elderly victim, police told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was arraigned Friday night and faces at least 10 charges including felony forced sex, aggravated assault and sexual assault. The nun was walking in the parking lot of St. Titus Church in Aliquippa, Pa., around 11:30 a.m. on Friday morning when a man came up to her from behind. He asked her if she needed help before exposing himself and the grabbing her neck and choking her on the ground. Police said the attacker also punched and sexually assaulted her. The nun’s injuries left her unable to speak when police arrived, so she wrote on a piece of paper that she had been assaulted, the Post-Gazette reported. The victim, who is a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden, suffered a broken jaw and was treated at Allegheny General Hospital, according to KDKA. She is reportedly in stable condition. Investigators said they were able to match the soles of Bullock’s shoes with a footprint found in the snow at the scene of the attack. SMH. Aliquippa Police
