‘Nancy Drew’ actress joins Ashley Greene, Hayden Panettiere and Rory Culkin in horror sequel. By Ryan J. Downey Emma Roberts Photo: GABRIEL BOUYS/ AFP/ Getty Images New residents of Woodsboro keep piling up: Emma Roberts has been cast in “Scream 4.” “I’m so excited to be part of this groundbreaking franchise,” Roberts told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s the perfect opportunity for me to do something completely different than I’ve ever done before.” Director/producer Wes Craven had this to say about the “Nancy Drew” actress: “Emma’s talent, beauty and range will add immensely to the sophistication, intensity and fun of the ‘Scream’ franchise as it returns to the screen once more.” It’s unclear who Roberts will be playing, although it’s widely assumed she’ll be Jill Prescott, cousin to Neve Campbell’s protagonist, Sidney. ( EW has reported that sources tell them this, as well.) Julia Roberts’ niece joins Ashley Greene (“Twilight”), Hayden Panettiere (TV’s “Heroes”) and Rory Culkin, who will take over the franchise from series regulars Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, all also set to appear. Roberts and Culkin previously worked together in 2008’s “Lymelife.” Writer Kevin Williamson has kept plot points under wraps. Speculation is running rampant as to who will survive the latest installment of the pop-culture-referencing horror series that famously killed off the first film’s biggest star, Drew Barrymore, in the opening sequence. “Scream” (1996), “Scream 2” (1997) and “Scream 3” (2000) were all directed by horror master Craven (“A Nightmare on Elm Street”) based on characters created by Williamson, who wrote the first two films. Williamson created TV’s “Dawson’s Creek” and heads up the CW’s “Vampire Diaries.” The “Scream” movies take place in the fictitious town of Woodsboro, where teens are stalked by killers with various motivations related to Sidney’s family — all while wearing the ghost-faced mask based on Edvard Munch’s famous painting “The Scream.” Filled with meta references to classic horror flicks, the movies deftly blended humor and angst with genuine frights.
