Kelis Says Recording Flesh Tone Was ‘Freeing’

‘I recorded it at home … literally laying on my couch,’ the singer laughs to MTV News of new album. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kelis Photo: MTV News The last couple of years have been a whirlwind for Kelis . She dealt with the demise of her marriage to Nas, celebrated the subsequent birth of her son, Knight, with the rapper and on Tuesday (July 6), the release of Flesh Tone, her first studio album in four years. We recently caught up with the singer, who said making the electro-infused album was liberating, noting that she hadn’t been hampered by the demands of her record label or any other outside influence. “Recording this album was a really freeing experience for me,” Kelis told MTV News. “There was no, like, label or opinion — there was no business involved. It’s great to be able to make music and to do this for a living. But the reality is when you can take [the] business out of the creation of music, is when it’s at its best,” Kelis said, adding, “It was just me.” The eclectic singer also divulged that the studio process was not only cathartic but cozy. “I recorded it at home and I recorded it, like, literally laying on my couch. It’s just the most comfortable way to possibly record an album with, like, snacks next to me,” Kelis laughed. “It was awesome.” According to Kelis, Flesh Tone, which includes the thumping electro-house track “4th of July (Fireworks)” and the chart-topping dance hit “Acapella,” touches on a few themes, from getting in tune with one’s spirituality to appreciating the little things in life. “The first thing is, just, like, God, and really being really blessed,” Kelis said. “I was pregnant, so I was made aware of a lot of things that I think we take for granted.” She revealed that even though it had been years since her last album, she hadn’t expected to be back on the scene for a while. “I didn’t plan on doing another record this soon. I know it’s been four years but for me it’s been really soon.” Feeling free is another topic that runs through Flesh Tone, and she addresses it most specifically on songs like “4th of July (Fireworks).” “That record, like most of the records on the album, is about, there’s a freedom in surrender and just … love, and life and baby,” said Kelis, whose son was born in July 2009. “Fireworks is … to me a great way to explain something, like, magnificent.” What do you think of Kelis’ new album? Amount includes $10,000 a month to pay off spousal support already owed by the rapper totaling $299,015. By Gil Kaufman Nas and Kelis Photo: Steve Granitz / Getty Images It was a rough day in court on Monday for rapper Nas , who was ordered by a judge to pay more than $350,000 in back support to his ex, singer Kelis , plus her legal and accounting fees. According to TMZ , a Los Angeles superior court judge ordered Nas to immediately pay more than $47,249 in back child support and $40,454 in back spousal support. That hefty amount was in addition to an order to pay Kelis $10,000 a month in spousal support until Nas pays off the $299,015 he already owes Kelis in support payments. Nas, who is preparing to drop his collabo album with Damian Marley, Distant Relatives , on May 18, was also ordered to pay Kelis’ legal fees in the divorce case, which top $155,000, as well as more than $48,000 in Kelis’ accounting expenses. Ever since the couple split just months before the birth of their first child together, Knight Jones , last summer, they have been battling it out in court over support payments. In December, a Los Angeles superior court judge ordered the rapper (born Nasir Jones) to bump up his monthly child and spousal support payments from $40,000 to $51,000, for a total of more than $600,000 a year. Kelis released an EP called Acapella — The Remixes last week, and her album Flesh Tone is due out on July 6. Related Artists Nas Kelis

Kelis Works With ‘Amazing’ Benny Benassi, David Guetta On Remix EP

‘Acapella,’ the first single from Flesh Tone, gets the dance-music treatment. By Akshay Bhansali Kelis Photo: Denise Truscello/WireImage Acapella — The Remixes, an EP of electronic variations of the first single off Kelis ‘ forthcoming Flesh Tone album is available digitally Tuesday (April 6), featuring production from a handful of Kelis’ apparent favorites from the dance/electronic music world. The original version of “Acapella” was produced by current dance-music crossover star David Guetta , so it’s not surprising he maintains an extended mix on the EP. Notably, Kelis also teamed up with Grammy Award-winning Italian dance-music producer Benny Benassi recently, the results of which are a Benassi-helmed remix of “Acapella,” Benassi’s upcoming single “Spaceship” and another song on Flesh Tone. MTV News caught up with both Kelis and Benassi just before they took the stage to perform both “Acapella (Benny Benassi Remix)” and “Spaceship” at the recent Ultra Music Festival in Miami for a crowd of close to 100,000 people. The occasion marked the first time the duo performed the song together for a live audience. “He’s amazing,” Kelis said. “He’s been amazing. He did a remix for me … that’s ridiculous. I just think his take on stuff is very him. You recognize his sound, and that’s important for a producer. I love the fact that I can give him a record to remix and it literally sounds like a new song.” “This was a big opportunity for us,” Benassi said. “To work with her … it’s a beautiful experience because we get to put our bass line and our energy for dance music with a beautiful voice.” Other producers included on Acapella — The Remixes EP are L.A. house DJ/producer Dave Aud
