‘Spider-Man’ Director Marc Webb Plays With ‘Amazing’ Canon

‘We wanted to do our own thing,’ filmmaker tells MTV News about his approach to the upcoming Spider-Man reboot for Sony. By Josh Wigler Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Sony Pictures Stop us if you’ve heard this one: Boy genius gets bit by a radioactive spider, gains superpowers, acts like a jerk for a while until his beloved uncle dies as a result, thereby inspiring him to start using his powers for good. A familiar tale, right? Those details — most of them at least — remain firmly in place for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” the upcoming cinematic reboot of the iconic Marvel superhero. But director Marc Webb wants you to know that there’s much more to this new tale than meets the eye. Some of the differences between the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” era and the upcoming new order are very clear right off the bat: new filmmaker, new leading man in Andrew Garfield. But there are other, more subtle differences too: a tone that’s a bit more grounded in reality, a new parent-centric backstory and a little filmmaking trick you might have heard of called 3-D. All of these things and more work together to bring moviegoers a Spider-Man they’re familiar with, but one who’s more than willing to spin a few curveballs along the way. As Summer Movie Preview week continues, MTV News presents our conversation with Webb about all things “Amazing” — from his “Spider-Man” fandom and the cues he took from the Raimi/Maguire films to why Garfield was the perfect choice to play Peter Parker, and much more. MTV : Aside from having a last name in common with his weapons of choice, can you give us a sense of your Spider-Man fandom? How long have you been a fan of this character? Marc Webb : I knew it obviously from when I was a little kid. I was between comic book series, but there was the animated series that I saw, that sort of thing. But I don’t know what it is: Kids have an intuitive attraction to Spider-Man, something that exists beyond the comic books and all the different media that’s out there. There’s something so simple, symmetrical and iconic about that design that kids are just drawn to it. So I can’t say when I started becoming a fan, but I’ve always been curious. It wasn’t until I got a call from Sony that I started thinking about the character in a more intellectual way. At first, I thought it was an absurd idea, but what stayed with me and haunted me was the idea that this character is so intensely relatable: He’s a superhero who’s just a kid. He’s not a billionaire, not an alien. His normal identity is so ordinary in so many ways, and so relatable, and that’s something about Marvel that I always liked. They made the teenagers the superheroes: the X-Men and Spider-Man, whereas [teens] were just the sidekicks in DC Comics. I think it was at a time in your life when you’re starting to access these stories and mythologies that make the wish-fulfillment component much more intense. I know I have a 17-year-old boy trapped inside of me forever, and that’s something with an instant appeal. MTV : It wasn’t so long ago that there was a trilogy of popular “Spider-Man” films … Webb : What ? No ! What the f—? MTV : It’s true! [Laughs.] It’s certainly a tough act to follow. Was there anything from the Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire era that you looked to when approaching your version of “Spider-Man,” or did you want to stay away from those films and start completely fresh? Webb : We wanted to do our own thing. We wanted a different villain and a different tone. There wasn’t anything I wanted to recapture from those movies, beyond their respect for the character. I thought that was a really wonderful thing. We’re doing something different and new and risky, and I understand that. But it’s something that I’ve found very appealing. I couldn’t let the opportunity go. I have deep and abiding respect for Sam and Tobey and all those movies that were made, but we are trying to achieve something different. It’s a unique set of circumstances when you talk about Spider-Man, because he’s been around for 50 years. People talk about rebooting characters. It’s different than, say, Harry Potter, who has just a handful of books for his entire canon. There’s so much material in Spider-Man that there are so many stories to tell and so many characters. It’s more like James Bond or something like that. MTV : Judging from trailers and the few scenes that have been released online, the takeaway for me is that this is a grittier “Spider-Man” movie, a bit more dangerous than some of the more cartoony takes we’ve seen previously. But the prankster side is still in place too. There’s a clip online of Peter really toying with a guy as he’s webbing him up, so the comedy is definitely there. How did you find the right mix of comedy and darkness in this movie? Webb : I wouldn’t say we were ever after pursuing darkness. We just wanted to keep things real. I think it comes down to everything having to emerge from a real place. The reason why Spider-Man is being so playful in that moment is that as a character, he’s feeling drunk on his power. He’s having a really good time. He’s becoming a bit of a bully there. He’s not being deeply altruistic, and that’s something you’ll learn more about when you see the movie. It’s a reflection of his attitude: He puts that mask on and the shy kid is gone. He’s now this really empowered superhero. That means having fun, sometimes at other people’s expense. MTV : Andrew had that great quote the other week, of Spider-Man acting like an Internet troll in the movie. Webb : It’s totally true. You get to see and do whatever you want without any personal consequences. There’s a danger to that … but there’s a thrill to it too. MTV : I was very happy with the casting of Andrew pretty much immediately. Looking at his work in “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” he struck me as a guy who could nail the comedy and the drama of the role . When you saw Andrew audition, what was it about him that stuck out to you? What made you see Peter Parker in this guy? Webb : He was both funny and earnest and he had a physical ability that I knew I could rely on. I wanted the movie to be funny, but I also wanted the movie to have real emotional depth and an emotional range. He can do that, and that’s incredibly rare: to find somebody who can be light and witty but can also communicate the real tragedy of the character vis-

Madonna’s MDNA: Behind The ‘Eclectic’ #1 Album

Producer Martin Solveig opens up to MTV News about working with the Queen of Pop on her latest chart-topping opus. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna released her latest chart-topping album, MDNA, last week, and whatever special magic she cast in the studio seemed to work. The dance-heavy album sits pretty at #1 this week, selling a whopping 359,000 units, proving that Madonna still is the Queen of Pop. The album is full of dirty and chugging production, with Madge lamenting about her broken heart on some songs and seeking vengeance against a former lover on others. The album gets production assists from William Orbit , Benny Benassi and Martin Solveig , among others, but it’s the contributions from those three that stand as the highlights. Both Solveig and Benassi had a hand in the album’s first two singles, “Girl Gone Wild” (Benassi) and “Give Me All Your Luvin” (Solveig), while Orbit brings some emotional gravitas to the record, recalling their work on Ray of Light. Solveig recently stopped by MTV News and opened up about creating the chart-topping album with Madonna. “We were working with no limits. I think the only thing that she said when we started was ‘I just want people to be able to dance to my music and connect easily with my music,’ and also probably to take some risks at some point,” he explained. “Other than this, it was open to any kind of experimentation.” What Solveig wanted to focus on when it came to experimenting with her was rhythm. “This is why I explored mainly the BPM thing,” he said, referring to the beats per minute of his tracks. “You have slow BPM, very fast BMP songs, twisty and more four to the floor, and I thought it was interesting to explore this, because she hasn’t done that a lot on the past albums. And actually, William did a little of the same. It’s very eclectic. Every song has a little story. It’s a collection of songs that are very different, but you are excited to listen from beginning to end.” With a hit record on her hands, Madonna will have a moment to breathe before she kicks off her world tour later this year. The trek will begin May 29 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Madge will land Stateside August 28 in Philadelphia. Did you pick up Madonna’s latest album this week? Share your reviews in the comments! Madonna Set To Score Eighth #1 Album

MDNA will likely sell up to 350,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna probably doesn’t need to stop by any of Piers Morgan’s talk shows to sell albums. The Material Girl is poised to have the #1 album on the Billboard albums chart next week. MDNA is estimated to sell between 300,000 and 350,000 copies by the end of the tracking week (Sunday), according to Billboard . The album, which dropped on March 26, marks Madonna’s fifth consecutive studio album to land in the top spot. She’s had a total of eight #1 albums in her career. 2008’s Hard Candy, her last studio album, debuted with 280,000 units sold, meaning that Madonna will once again even top herself with MDNA if the numbers shake out as expected. For the album, Madonna reunited with her Ray of Light producer William Orbit, as well as other electronic-music producers like Martin Solveig and Benny Benassi, creating an album that ranges from hard-hitting dance tracks to lighthearted pop affairs. Madge’s record sales were reinforced thanks to a joint album/ concert-ticket sale venture through which fans were offered the chance to purchase the release along with tickets to her highly anticipated world tour. But Madonna isn’t the only 1980s superstar expected to sit high atop the Billboard 200 next week. Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee should place at #2 with 125,000 to 150,000 albums sold. The album features re-workings of some of Richie’s biggest tunes with the assistance of country stars like Shania Twain and Blake Shelton. Billboard points out the last time Madge and Richie were in the top five together was in October 1986 when Richie was at #1 with Dancing on the Ceiling while the Queen of Pop’s onetime #1 True Blue was settled at #5. Justin Bieber’s own big release, his new single “Boyfriend,” which also dropped Monday, is also expected to have a big week on the charts. According to early estimates, the lead Believe single could sell more than 400,000 downloads in its first week, giving it a big push on next week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart. This would give the singer his best sales week for a song to date. Related Artists Madonna

Madonna Drops New Single ‘Girl Gone Wild’

Pop icon’s inner dance-floor vixen comes out on second MDNA single. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s “Girl Gone Wild” Photo: Interscope Madonna kicked the party off with “Give Me All Your Luvin’, ” and she’s keeping it going with her second MDNA single, “Girl Gone Wild.” The thumping song, released Monday (February 27), proves that this era of Madonna will certainly be focused on pumping out dance-floor anthems. ” Girl Gone Wild ” is all about the heat of letting loose and dancing, certainly themes that Madge fans will find familiar. Produced by Benny Benassi, the track, though fun and funky, is a bit darker than her first single, which seemed to pay homage to the ’80s version of the pop icon in its bright nature. “I got that burnin’ hot desire/ And no one can put out my fire/ It’s coming right down through the wire/ Here it comes/ When I hear them 808 drums/ It’s got me singing,” she proclaims on the catchy, sing-along chorus. “Hey, ey, ey, ey/ Like a girl gone wild/ A good girl gone wild/ I’m like, hey, ey, ey, ey/ Like a girl gone wild/ A good girl gone wild.” The song chugs along thanks to more dance-floor confessions from the singer, which include, “The room is spinning/ It must be the Tanqueray/ I’m about to go astray/ My inhibition’s gone away/ I feel like sinning/ You got me in the zone/ DJ play my favorite song/ Turn me on.” The video was shot earlier this month and was directed by fashion photographers Mert and Marcus, who also shot the colorful artwork for the album . It had been rumored that Britney Spears would be featured on the track, but that rumor was shot down by Madonna herself. MDNA will drop on March 26. It features production from collaborators like Martin Solveig and William Orbit, Demolition Crew, Alessandro “Alle” Benassi, Hardy “Indiigo” Muanza and Michael Malih. Las Vegas Set To Launch EDM Into High Gear In 2012

Marquee Nightclub’s one-year anniversary rings in new year with performances by Avicii, Kaskade. By Sam Hendrick Kaskade celebrates New Year’s Eve at Marquee Nightclub in Las Vegas Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Two years ago, we probably wouldn’t be writing this story. In fact, nobody would be. But dance music has taken Sin City by storm so rapidly that it’s simply impossible to ignore. Last year drew America’s largest EDM festival to Las Vegas. And with it came a core of A-list international acts passing through town and calling many of the city’s hottest venues home, turning America’s Playground into what some called America’s Ibiza . As the American palate skews ever toward dance, Las Vegas club life is healthier than ever. MTV News ventured back to the desert to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Marquee Nightclub and further prove that this EDM mecca is not only thriving but poised to smash 2012. “I think it’s only fitting that we ended the year with two amazing artists [Kaskade and Avicii],” said Jason Strauss, owner and co-founder of Strategic Group, the entity behind Marquee, Tao and LAVO. “To have an explosive partner artist like Tim [Avicii] to be with us is going to be historic for us and really tie in this whole year the way it should be”. Marquee certainly has reason to celebrate. In just one year, it’s been able to obtain a power lineup of residencies from the likes of Above & Beyond, ATB, Benny Benassi, Chuckie, Dirty South, Erick Morillo, Kaskade, Markus Schulz and Redfoo. Add Hardwell and a half dozen new DJs to the 2012 lineup, along with cutting-edge sight and sound, and it’s clear that Marquee has planted a flag in the upper echelon of the Vegas EDM scene. “I really like the club feeling of Marquee,” Avicii (born Tim Bergling) said prior to his set. “The production is amazing and that kind of creates a really unique vibe from the DJ perspective.” This past weekend, the mega venue started off in high gear with a staggering 12-hour set from Kaskade , followed by an anniversary show from Avicii, who just a couple of years ago, couldn’t even buy a lady a drink. “I had my first gig at Wet Republic about two years ago and they wouldn’t even let me into the club,” he recalled. “They had two guards escort me to the DJ booth and then straight off because of alcohol and everything.” Avicii and a slew of other influential players have partnered with some of the world’s premier venues to bring EDM into the heart of American cool culture. “It’s been big all throughout America, but I think this is where you can really see it because you get the biggest DJs in the world playing here every week,” Avicii said. “I don’t know any other place that has the same lineups that Vegas does.” “Everyone goes there. People from all kinds, all sorts, they like all kinds of music,” Fedde le Grand recently told MTV News. “It’s very important that dance music is in Vegas because people from all around come. Especially with dance music, you have to experience it to really get it.” EDM’s influence in Vegas has become so prominent that the city has declared an official holiday honoring one of the genre’s biggest names. Mayor Carolyn Goodman has issued a proclamation officially declaring January 2, 2012, “deadmau5 Day” in the City of Las Vegas, marking the date deadmau5 launched his exclusive partnership with Wynn Las Vegas. Skrillex Is MTV’s EDM Artist Of 2011!

DJ/producer cements his breakthrough year with five Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. By Akshay Bhansali Skrillex Photo: Getty Images Back in late 2010, EDM superstar DJ/producer deadmau5 told MTV News a star was on the rise. He said his friend and former post-hardcore/emo rocker Sonny Moore — producing and performing under the name Skrillex — was going to be a force to be reckoned with. “He’s taking over — I think he’s going to outdo me,” deadmau5 told MTV News at the time. “I think he’s going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don’t think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I’ll be so proud of him, the little goblin!” Now, the ever-prophetic ‘mau5 has more to be proud of. A lot more. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV’s roundtable has named Skrillex the #1 EDM Artist of 2011, underscored by his most recent series of accolades: He scored a whopping five Grammy nominations, including being the first DJ to land a Best New Artist nod. Indeed, Moore’s musical background — both on his own and as a member of his former group, From First to Last — has carried over into Skrillex’s brand of fiery electronica. Skrillex has garnered an audience the world over that includes ravers, house heads and rockers alike. In today’s laptop generation of music, Skrillex is the new “rock.” From his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go’s “Cinema” to the recent Avicii pop song “Le7els” (not officially released yet), Skrillex dropped massive re-workings in ’11, in addition to his More Monsters and Sprites EP. He scored video games, produced records for Korn, launched his own OWSLA label and hit almost every major festival in the States, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. An exceptional catalog of releases coupled with an incessant touring schedule has made Skrillex the biggest EDM star of the year. In 2012, he plans to tour 322 of the 365 days. While he didn’t expect to become recognized as this year’s biggest success story, Skrillex’s peers say the swell of critical and fan support is fitting. “He definitely deserves it,” former OWSLA tourmate, DJ/producer Porter Robinson, told MTV News. “I’ve been saying it all year: He’s the most influential musician of this year, in any genre. Incredible sound designer. Incredible songwriter. Amazing performer.” “He’s been in bands before,” EDM artist and collaborator Sofi told us. “He’s an excellent songwriter. He can sing. He’s just so versatile that I think that comes through in his music. He kind of brought this ‘rock,’ ‘raw’ element into electronic music. He’s the punk rock of the new generation.” Even industry veteran David Guetta, who lands at #2 on our list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011, agreed with all the praise heaped on Skrillex. “He’s extremely talented, and I’m very happy for him,” Guetta said of Skrill’s Grammy noms. “It’s a statement: I think it’s really good that an artist from our community is nominated just as ‘an artist.’ Not as a ‘dance’ artist, you know? I think that it’s good that [our] music is now getting the attention and the respect that all the other styles of music, like hip-hop, are getting.” MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Kaskade Talks ‘Sweet’ Skrillex Collabo, ‘Lick It’

Two versions of song appear on Kaskade’s double album Fire and Ice. By Nick Philippou Kaskade Photo: MTV News Kaskade is making EDM fans’ dreams come true on his highly anticipated double album Fire and Ice, available exclusively on Monday (October 24). He teams up with budding dubstep icon Skrillex for “Lick It,” a track so tasty that you might try to do just that. We’ve secured a preview for your electro-fix, and it’s everything you would imagine from a combination of Kaskade’s progressive house vibe and Skrillex’s sound-crunching bass riffs. Kaskade predicted to MTV News that “Lick It” will definitely surprise people, in a good way. “I think most people went, ‘Wait, Kaskade and Skrillex — that’s two different things.’ But I think that’s what makes it interesting, you know?” Kaskade said. “Don’t take somebody who’s doing the exact same thing I’m doing, let’s find people that I really enjoy, but are doing something different than I’m doing.” Kaskade enticed an impressive group of collaborators from across genres for Fire and Ice, including Skylar Gray and alt rockers Neon Trees, but when pairing up with Skrillex, Kaskade knew he was enlisting one of EDM’s rising stars. “It’s crazy — Skrillex has had a massive year,” Kaskade said. “I think because not that many people knew about him last year, and then all of a sudden he’s just everywhere this year. It’s cool that he’s been able to do that. It’s been a massive impact on the underground.” Skrillex’s breakout stems from a rabid fanbase fueling tour demands after a steady stream of successes this year, like his remix of Benny Benassi’s “Cinema” and his recent single “First of the Year.” Those followed up his massive 2010 debut, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,” which opened at #1 on the Beatport Top 100. Kaskade told MTV News that he had so much fun doing a remix of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites for Skrillex that he immediately knew that he wanted to do an original song with the dubstep master of Generation Next. Now, thankful fans of both artists will get two new songs from the pair on Kaskade’s double LP Fire and Ice, with one offering a club-ready and revved-up Fire version of “Lick It” and the other a more down-tempo Ice rendition of the song. “I had already worked up a track and had something in mind, and I threw it to him and this is what we got,” Kaskade said. “Skrillex sent it back to me, and I was like, ‘Sweet, dude — we got that bass patch in there. Yeah!’ ” Who would you like to hear Kaskade, Skrillex or both team up with and do a song for? Maybe they’ll take your two cents if you leave a comment! Related Artists Kaskade Skrillex

Britney Spears Remix Album ‘Shines New Light’ On EDM

B in the Mix: The Remixes Vol. 2, out Tuesday, features Ti&#235sto’s ‘timeless’ take on ‘Piece of Me.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Damian Vaca Britney Spears Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images On Britney Spears ‘ latest release, B in the Mix: The Remixes Vol. 2 , which dropped Tuesday (October 11), a group of dance music’s biggest names have put their stamp on some of the singer’s most-popular tunes from the past few years. Chopped, screwed and broken down, the songs reach new extremes. “It’s cool that big mainstream pop artists let their music be remixed by people in the underground, like me,” Kaskade , who contributed his version of “Gimme More,” told MTV News. “It shines a new light on the EDM scene and how far it can reach. I give Britney props for taking chances and letting dance music be heard by the masses.” Kaskade is one of many EDM artists who appear on the album. He and other DJs who contributed say it’s been a gratifying experience. “She’s been a pop icon for so long. I appreciate a lot of the values she brings to music,” Cobra Starship ‘s Alex Suarez explained. “She sings really well. I appreciate her talents. I definitely respect what she does and why she’s successful. “I’m impressed people stick by her, and when I got the opportunity, I was like, ‘Wow.’ Britney Spears is huge. She’s a huge name worldwide.’ ” Suarez remixed “Till the World Ends” and said he didn’t want to go too far off course for his take on the Femme Fatale single. “I thought the original was really good to begin with,” he explained. “I thought I wanted to make this as special as I can. I tried to stick true to the structure of the song. “Sometimes, you get remixes and they chop it up and mix it around, which is cool. The thing with a Britney Spears remix is people like to sing along.” Kaskade explained that he was “excited at the chance to get to mess with” “Gimme More,” and he wanted to make sure his remix worked with his musical style. “I wanted to make sure that it would be something that would eventually fit into my live set,” he said. “That is the true test for me: Taking a huge pop vocal and making it work with my music can be a little tricky, but I find the challenge fun. I really dig what Brit does, and this song is awesome, so I was really excited.” The album is a blend of old and new remixes: EDM superstar Ti
