Skrillex Is MTV’s EDM Artist Of 2011!

DJ/producer cements his breakthrough year with five Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. By Akshay Bhansali Skrillex Photo: Getty Images Back in late 2010, EDM superstar DJ/producer deadmau5 told MTV News a star was on the rise. He said his friend and former post-hardcore/emo rocker Sonny Moore — producing and performing under the name Skrillex — was going to be a force to be reckoned with. “He’s taking over — I think he’s going to outdo me,” deadmau5 told MTV News at the time. “I think he’s going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don’t think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I’ll be so proud of him, the little goblin!” Now, the ever-prophetic ‘mau5 has more to be proud of. A lot more. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV’s roundtable has named Skrillex the #1 EDM Artist of 2011, underscored by his most recent series of accolades: He scored a whopping five Grammy nominations, including being the first DJ to land a Best New Artist nod. Indeed, Moore’s musical background — both on his own and as a member of his former group, From First to Last — has carried over into Skrillex’s brand of fiery electronica. Skrillex has garnered an audience the world over that includes ravers, house heads and rockers alike. In today’s laptop generation of music, Skrillex is the new “rock.” From his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go’s “Cinema” to the recent Avicii pop song “Le7els” (not officially released yet), Skrillex dropped massive re-workings in ’11, in addition to his More Monsters and Sprites EP. He scored video games, produced records for Korn, launched his own OWSLA label and hit almost every major festival in the States, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. An exceptional catalog of releases coupled with an incessant touring schedule has made Skrillex the biggest EDM star of the year. In 2012, he plans to tour 322 of the 365 days. While he didn’t expect to become recognized as this year’s biggest success story, Skrillex’s peers say the swell of critical and fan support is fitting. “He definitely deserves it,” former OWSLA tourmate, DJ/producer Porter Robinson, told MTV News. “I’ve been saying it all year: He’s the most influential musician of this year, in any genre. Incredible sound designer. Incredible songwriter. Amazing performer.” “He’s been in bands before,” EDM artist and collaborator Sofi told us. “He’s an excellent songwriter. He can sing. He’s just so versatile that I think that comes through in his music. He kind of brought this ‘rock,’ ‘raw’ element into electronic music. He’s the punk rock of the new generation.” Even industry veteran David Guetta, who lands at #2 on our list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011, agreed with all the praise heaped on Skrillex. “He’s extremely talented, and I’m very happy for him,” Guetta said of Skrill’s Grammy noms. “It’s a statement: I think it’s really good that an artist from our community is nominated just as ‘an artist.’ Not as a ‘dance’ artist, you know? I think that it’s good that [our] music is now getting the attention and the respect that all the other styles of music, like hip-hop, are getting.” MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Is Mac Miller’s Performance MTV’s Best Of 2011?

‘Knock Knock’ is up for best MTV live performance of the year — cast your vote! By Rya Backer Mac Miller performs in Chicago in October Photo: MTV Mac Miller ‘s live performance of “Knock Knock” in Chicago is a fairly good reflection of what you’re in for at one of his concerts: very little gravity, a lot of movement and fans who could easily understudy for the rapper because they know every word to every track. It’s his pumped-up, feel-good presence that puts him on the list of contenders for the Best MTV Live Performance of 2011 . And we totally understand why he made the list. Just last week, when we checked out Mac’s set at New York’s Best Buy Theater, it wasn’t so much a concert as it was a gigantic school’s-out-forever party. He proved to be a very capable MC in both the literal and hip-hop definitions, ordering the audience to have fun and delivering tracks from his EPs and LP alike with the backing of a DJ, a handful of friends and a hype man. There were many times during the nearly hour-and-a-half-long set, however, when Miller didn’t even need to perform: So dedicated is his following that there was literally not a line that wasn’t also uttered by the audience. Miller took advantage of their skills especially during “Party on Fifth Ave.,” as they traded lines during the chorus. The loyal crowd seldom stayed still, dancing and fist-pumping their way through such tracks as a guitar-heavy “Smile Back” and standouts “Donald Trump” and “Frick Park Market.” Only adding to the concert’s festive feel was the sing-along Mac performed in the middle of his set. Armed with only a Rickenbacker, Miller blazed through the choruses of such pop standards as Lynyrd Skynyrd ‘s “Sweet Home Alabama” and Biz Markie ‘s “Just a Friend.” By night’s end, the lights went up and friends high-fived, still ecstatic that they’d just seen their hero, their heavily tattooed peer who understands their obsessions and obstacles and assures them that, despite it all, everyone’s due to have a “Best Day Ever.” That performance and many others have landed Mac a spot on this year’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll . Patricia Clarkson Talks Tammy One’s Scary ‘Parks And Rec’ Arrival

Ron Swanson’s cold-hearted ex-wife is #29 on MTV News’ Top 50 TV characters. By Jocelyn Vena Patricia Clarkson as Tammy One on “Parks and Recreation” Photo: NBC Before Patricia Clarkson ‘s arrival on “Parks and Recreation,” fans could only imagine what Ron Swanson’s chilling, manipulative ex-wife was like. The mere thought of Tammy One returning sends Ron running for cover. But over a two-episode arc, Clarkson perfectly embodied the role of Tammy One, giving a cold-hearted face to the show’s most-feared character. Tammy One’s arrival in Pawnee, Indiana, was bone-chilling and left fans crossing their fingers that Swanson would get out alive. That memorable introduction also helped her to place a solid #29 on MTV News’ list of Top 2011 TV Characters . We got on the phone with Clarkson on Tuesday, and she opened up about getting the chance to play the scariest woman in the “Parks and Rec” universe. MTV : What was your reaction when you first read this character? She’s the only person that seems to really get under Ron Swanson’s skin. It takes a lot to get under his skin. Jimmy Fallon, one Pretty Little Liar and more also make our TV Top 50! Patricia Clarkson : Oh, yes it does! Well when I first read it I thought, “Oh my.” You know I’m friends with Nick [Offerman] and Megan [Mullally] and they came to me urging me. And I thought, “Why do you think I’m this [character]? … First of all, let’s deal with that.” You know, I’m quite goofy, but I like doing characters that are a little bit of a stretch for me, and I do have a frightening aspect, and I think we all do as people. I think we can all summon the devils and the demons when we want. I am so thrilled I did this. MTV : We had heard a lot about Ron Swanson’s various Tammys, and you sort of embodied everything “Parks and Rec” fans had wanted to see for so long. Clarkson : The lore that this character carries, the backstory — that was also intimidating, very intimidating to walk into that situation. That also was what made me hesitant, but then I said, “What the hell?” It was beautifully written and funny and perfectly etched. And I do really believe that this is one of the greatest shows ever. I do think it’s an indelible cast of characters. It’s just a superb show. MTV : Are we going to see, maybe, the Tammys teaming up at all? Clarkson : We’re in the dark. Will Megan and I square off? … Will we all come back and have a weenie roast? I don’t know. First of all, the ceiling would have to be quite high, literally and figuratively. MTV : Have you heard if you’ll be back at all? Clarkson : I don’t know. I think they want the element of surprise, whether she does or doesn’t. It’s up to the writers and what they have in store for this season. We’ll see; it would be a blast. MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale: My Favorite 2011 Album

Spears reinforced her bad-girl persona with an ode to nightclubs and hot boys. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Photo: Jive To say that 2011 was an outstanding year for pop is a bit of an understatement.
