Metallica Movie Heads To Theaters Via Resurrected Picturehouse Founder Bob Berney

The headline for moviegoers here is that the new feature Metallica Through the Never is headed to theaters. What is more significant is how it will get there. Longtime distribution figure Bob Berney is resurrecting a label he once headed, Picturehouse, to serve as CEO, while a veteran in the filmmaking scene in her own right, Jeanne Berney, will serve as president of the label, which will be based in New York. Metallica Through the Never stars members of the band as well as Dane DeHaan ( The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ) who plays a young band crew member. He is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a live set in front of a sold-out crown and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down. The re-fashioned Picturehouse will open the film August 9th. “Metallica’s way of doing things is to jump into unexplored creative endeavors with no safety net whatsoever,” said Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. “Putting this movie together for the last couple of years has been a pretty wild ride, and we’ve definitely done our share of flying without a net!  Bringing Bob and Jeanne and the new Picturehouse team in at this point provides us with a much needed level of security for the distribution of the film. Their spirit of independence and desire to work outside the box is something we can relate to in every way, and this makes them both a welcome addition and a natural fit in the Metallica family.” The new Picturehouse plans to acquire, market and theatrically release independent films from the U.S. and around the world, beginning with two to three films this year and increasing its output to four to five features in 2014 and six or seven in subsequent years it said Tuesday. Bob Berney helped launch the original Picturehouse in April 2005 as a joint venture between Time Warner’s HBO and New Line Cinema divisions. During that tenure, the company released Guilermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth which won three Oscars; Olivier Dahan’s La Vie en Rose (winner of two Academy Awards, including best actress for Marion Cotillard); Sergei Bodrov’s Mongol ; Patricia Rozema’s Kit Kittredge: An American Girl ; Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home Companion ; and Seth Gordon’s documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters . Time Warner later folded Picturehouse and New Line into the general Warner Bros. operations and the brand continued to live in the home entertainment and television releases of its films. Most recently Berney co-founded and served as president of theatrical distribution of FilmDistrict, overseeing the roll outs of Insidious, Soul Surfer, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark and Drive . Prior to Picturehouse he worked at IFC Films, where he acquired and oversaw the release of films including the $240-million surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Y Tu Mamá También . Later he served as president and partner of Newmarket Films, releasing features including Mel Gibson’s $370 million-grossing The Passion of the Christ as well as Monster , which earned Charlize Theron the Best Actress Academy Award; and Whale Rider , a little-known Toronto International Film Festival find that also received a Best Actress nomination. Newmarket sold its distribution operation to Time Warner as part of the formation of Picturehouse. Entertainment marketing veteran Jeanne Berney most recently served as Executive Vice President of Marketing at FilmDistrict. Before that, she was Executive Vice President of Marketing and Administration for Apparition. Jeanne Berney also served as Director of Public Relations and Marketing at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, where she was responsible for the campaigns for all of the Society’s year-round programs.

WATCH: Jagger, Richards & Bono Talk About The Magic Of ‘Muscle Shoals’

The analog days of rock and soul music in the 1960s and ’70s are going to be well-represented at the Sundance Film Festival . In addition to the premiere of Sound City , Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl’s documentary about the legendary Van Nuys, CA recording studio where Nirvana’s Nevermind and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours were recorded, filmmaker Greg “Freddy” Camalier will be debuting Muscle Shoals , the story of the Alabama city and its FAME studios, which also holds an esteemed place in the annals of popular music. Camalier tells the story of FAME Studios founder Rick Hall and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section — dubbed the Swampers by singer/songwriter Leon Russell — who were the architects of the Muscle Shoals sound epitomized, according to Rolling Stone writer David Fricke by the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There.” The Swampers, who were also immortalized in Lynyrd Skynyrd’s rock classic “Sweet Home Alabama,” ended up leaving FAME to start their own studio, which is covered in Camalier’s film, as well as all of the enduring music that was created in Muscle Shoals, including the Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar,” Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman,” Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome,” Jimmy Cliff’s “Sitting in Limbo” and Skynyrd’s air-guitar staple, “Freebird.” Check out the trailer below, which includes appearances by Steve Winwood, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards , Cliff and U2’s Bono: RELATED: WATCH: ‘Sound City’ Trailer Offers Glimpse Of Dave Grohl’s Love Letter To Rock ‘N’ Roll’s Pre-Digital Era Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Is Mac Miller’s Performance MTV’s Best Of 2011?

‘Knock Knock’ is up for best MTV live performance of the year — cast your vote! By Rya Backer Mac Miller performs in Chicago in October Photo: MTV Mac Miller ‘s live performance of “Knock Knock” in Chicago is a fairly good reflection of what you’re in for at one of his concerts: very little gravity, a lot of movement and fans who could easily understudy for the rapper because they know every word to every track. It’s his pumped-up, feel-good presence that puts him on the list of contenders for the Best MTV Live Performance of 2011 . And we totally understand why he made the list. Just last week, when we checked out Mac’s set at New York’s Best Buy Theater, it wasn’t so much a concert as it was a gigantic school’s-out-forever party. He proved to be a very capable MC in both the literal and hip-hop definitions, ordering the audience to have fun and delivering tracks from his EPs and LP alike with the backing of a DJ, a handful of friends and a hype man. There were many times during the nearly hour-and-a-half-long set, however, when Miller didn’t even need to perform: So dedicated is his following that there was literally not a line that wasn’t also uttered by the audience. Miller took advantage of their skills especially during “Party on Fifth Ave.,” as they traded lines during the chorus. The loyal crowd seldom stayed still, dancing and fist-pumping their way through such tracks as a guitar-heavy “Smile Back” and standouts “Donald Trump” and “Frick Park Market.” Only adding to the concert’s festive feel was the sing-along Mac performed in the middle of his set. Armed with only a Rickenbacker, Miller blazed through the choruses of such pop standards as Lynyrd Skynyrd ‘s “Sweet Home Alabama” and Biz Markie ‘s “Just a Friend.” By night’s end, the lights went up and friends high-fived, still ecstatic that they’d just seen their hero, their heavily tattooed peer who understands their obsessions and obstacles and assures them that, despite it all, everyone’s due to have a “Best Day Ever.” That performance and many others have landed Mac a spot on this year’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll . Crystal Bowersox’s Friends Says She’s Earned ‘American Idol’ Finale Spot

Crystal Bowersox’s Friends Says She’s Earned ‘Idol’ Finale Spot By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox visits her hometown of Toledo, Ohio Photo: Getty Images Though she didn’t appear to have the same kind of moment Lee DeWyze did on Tuesday, Crystal Bowersox’s did plenty to earn herself a slot in next week’s season-nine finale , according to her hometown friends. “Crystal left no doubt in my mind last night that she should win this,” said John Schafer, who has booked Bowersox at Maumee, Ohio’s Village Idiot bar dozens of times. “[Her] ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ was a chilling rendition of McCartney’s song that I’d bet he’d be proud of.” Perhaps he’s biased, but Schafer disagreed with the judges on their assessment of DeWyze’s take on Leonard Cohen’s oft-covered “Hallelujah,” calling it a “pale effort.” Even though he’s not a big Melissa Etheridge fan, Schafer thought Bowersox nailed her cover of “Come to My Window,” which he suspected would also make the original’s author proud. And while he thought Lee chose well with his cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” he again felt it didn’t do much with the song and wasn’t that impressive. “I guess I’m saying that Crystal’s version of both songs could be substituted for the originals, and Lee’s could not,” he said. Nate Woodward, a cook and bartender at the Village Idiot and a good friend of Bowersox’s, was in the audience for Tuesday night’s performance. It was his second trip out to Los Angeles to see her on the show, and he agreed that MamaSox should be onstage next week. But he also admitted that it felt like DeWyze did a better job than Crystal, though he said she was clearly superior to Casey James. “I’m pretty sure she’ll make it through to the top two,” Woodward said, still a bit groggy after getting an early wake-up call to discuss the show. “I thought both of Crystal’s songs were awesome,” he said, referring to the Etheridge tune and an Ellen DeGeneres-picked cover of McCartney’s solo hit. Woodward said the studio audience seemed clearly stacked with screaming teenage DeWyze fans, with a smaller contingent of Bowersox backers and a much less-vocal group of James supporters. He didn’t get a chance to talk to Crystal after the show, but Woodward said he spoke to her after Monday’s rehearsal, and she was feeling “super pumped” about both songs. “The reaction in the room as great,” he said about the studio audience’s feeling about Bowersox’s songs. “Everyone around us was talking about how well she did. I’m gonna be nervous as hell tonight. But hopefully she makes it through, and it will be exciting.” How do you think Crystal did on “Idol” Tuesday night? Share your reviews in the comments. Lee DeWyze Has Pre-‘Idol’ History With ‘Simple Man’

Brian Friedopfer recalls singing the Skynyrd tune with Lee at karaoke. By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze’s friend Brian Friedopfer Photo: MTV News ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Illinois — When Lee DeWyze sang Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” on Tuesday night’s “American Idol,” somewhere in the greater Chicago area, Brian Friedopfer was freaking out. That’s not surprising, because the “Idol” finalist’s low-key hometown pal has a deep history with DeWyze and the song, which Lee has been playing in his live shows for years. Along with his knockout take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” the Skynyrd ballad might just have given former paint-store clerk and high school hellion Lee a lock on a title shot in the finale. “We used to go to this karaoke bar, Potato Creek Johnny’s, and I started bringing [Lee] and a good buddy of his, Vince … and I used to sing ‘Simple Man,’ ” Friedopfer, 27, told MTV News last week during a viewing party at the Fox and Hound Smokehouse, where more than 100 of DeWyze’s friends and family had gathered to cheer him into the top three. “That used to be my song.” Then, one night, Lee chose the 1973 Southern-rock standard at Johnny’s, and when Friedopfer showed up, his pals told him that DeWyze had already grabbed “his” tune. “Well, after Lee sang it, the second I heard him sing one note I was like, ‘I can never sing the song again,’ because there is no way I will ever come near him, and ever since then we joke about it.” They’ve dueted on the ballad a few times since and Friedopfer has turned it into a running joke. “Whenever I think of Lee, I think of ‘Simple Man,’ ” he said. “I’ll never have that song back.” On Wednesday morning (May 19), Friedopfer said he was blown away by Lee’s performance of the song on the show. “I knew he was going to do it, and I’m so happy for him,” he said. “When I first found out he was going to sing it, I told him, ‘You mean I’m finally going to have an iTunes version of that song?’ I’ve been wanting a studio version for so long!” Before Tuesday night, Friedopfer said the only version of DeWyze singing “Simple Man” that existed was a YouTube video he uploaded of Lee singing it at Johnny’s. “He was born to sing that song.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
