Middle Schooler Provides Classmates In Need With Clothes And School Supplies

A middle schooler from Louisiana is paying it forward by ensuring that his classmates have basic necessities to start the school year. To help students in need, 13-year-old Chase Neyland-Square created a closet at his school to provide them with free clothes and school supplies, CBS News reported. 13-year-old creates school closet to give clothes and supplies to classmates in need https://t.co/UCP3CBbjmD pic.twitter.com/pAre3ssKCa — CBS News (@CBSNews) August 30, 2019 Neyland-Square—an eighth-grader at Port Allen Middle School—came up with the concept for the project while participating in the school’s SPARK (Student Program for Arts, Recreation, and Knowledge) program. He and other students were tasked with developing ideas for social good initiatives that would benefit the school and the local community. Aware of the struggles faced by some of his peers, Neyland-Square decided to transform one of the closets at his school into PAM’s Pantry; a space that houses donated clothes, shoes, personal care and hygiene products and school supplies for students and their families. “I know that everybody doesn’t have things and I’m fortunate to have things that other people don’t have, and I look at it as sometimes, how would I feel in that situation?” he said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “I’m going to come back and continue working on PAM’s Pantry. I’m hoping one day I can turn it into a non-profit organization.” Initiatives like the one being led by Neyland-Square are needed. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty , 15 million children throughout the country live in extreme poverty and are unable to afford school supplies. Several youngsters are leading their own philanthropic efforts to help people in need. In celebration of their birthday, Alabama-based 12-year-olds Breanna and Brooke Bennett launched an initiative designed to provide care packages that include hygiene products for girls their age. In North Carolina, a 3-year-old entrepreneur donated the sales from her lemonade stand to help homeless mothers and children. Kevin Barnett, Comedian and Rel Co-Creator, Dies at 32

Kevin Barnett, a highly successful stand-up comedian who recently helped create the sitcom Rel, was found dead during a vacation last week in Mexico. He was 32 years old. The cause of Barnett’s death remains unknown at this time, but the tragic piece of news was confirmed via a Tweet from the official account of the Last Podcast Network, on which Barnett co-hosted the weekly series Roundtable of Gentlemen. “Dear Last Podcast family,” opens this sad message, which expounds with the awful details as follows: It’s with a heavy heart we inform you of the passing of Kevin Barnett. The joy he brought to our lives is the greatest gift we have ever received. Remind your friends you love them because you never know when you’ll see them again. We love you KB. We’ll share more details about what happened as they come in. Over the weekend, however, Barnett shared his last-ever social media post: a photo of himself on a sidewalk in Mexico, along with a caption that read: “In mexico. Bought myself a sweater. Been accused of appropriation several times. In my head I just gave a lady some money so I ain’t cold. Either way. Swag heavy. Mixtape comin.” Barnett wrote and contributed to a multitute of television shows and films, including Broad City, The Carmichael Show and The Heartbreak Kid. The sitcom Rel, which he co-created, premiered just a few months ago in September; it stars Get Out actor and comedian Lil Rel Howery and Sinbad. Barnett also had a few movies in the works as well, including one called The Wrong Missy with David Spade. “Our hearts are broken, as are those of everyone at Rel, at the news of Kevin Barnett’s passing. He was an incredibly funny, wildly talented man who had so much more to do and so many more stories to tell,” a rep for Twentieth Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement. It concluded: “We send our thoughts and prayers to his friends and family during this difficult time.” Comedy Central also paid tribute to Barnett after the awful news broke, writing: “Kevin Barnett was an incredible comedian and writer, contributing to Broad City, the stand-up community and beyond. He’ll be greatly missed.” Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Chelsea Peretti, meanwhile, Tweeted, “i am so sad.” And Crashing‘s Jamie A. Lee added on Instagram: “A shocking, horrible loss. Kevin Barnett was a brilliant comedian and a great guy. RIP @fatboybarnett. This is so awful.” “I’m at a loss for words hearing about Kevin Barnett… We went to college together and both moved out to LA to pursue the dream,” actor and comedian King Bach wrote on Twitter, concluding: “Rest in paradise brother.” Then there was The Simpsons and Parks and Recreation producer Mike Scully, who worked on The Carmichael Show and said of Barnett: “Kevin Barnett was a great standup, but I knew him as a smart, funny, talented TV writer and just a really sweet guy who made the insanity of the late nights more fun. “Condolences to his family and friends. Can’t believe I’m writing this.” We concur. This is what Pete Davidson wrote of the tragedy: “The world lost a great one today. One of our comedy family members Kevin Barnett has tragically passed. I love Kevin. I’ve known him for nearly 10 years and he’s always been the sweetest and funniest. “Always had a smile on his face. Was one of the few that treated me like a comic even when I was just 16 years old. He always made me feel part of the group.” May Kevin Barnett rest in peace. “Saving Our Daughters” Brought The Ron Clark Academy Cinderellas Students to the Set of FOX’s Hit Series STAR During Women’s Month

Source: Saving Our Daughters / Radio One Atlanta On Wednesday March 14th, the girls of the Ron Clark Academy had an amazing, life changing experience as they walked onto the incredible set of the Fox television show STAR, co-created by Lee Daniels. The 5th-7th graders that participated in the special field trip are a part of the “Saving Our Daughter’s Cinderella” program, which was co-founded by actress and singer, Keke Palmer back in 2014. Ms. Palmer is also a guest star on the STAR TV series. The visit was coordinated by the producer’s assistant, Erica Young. In addition to setting up a tour of the stages and sets, she arranged for a Q&A with some of the women that play a part in the development of the show. Karen Gist (Show Runner), Jen Klein (Co-Producer/Writer), Toni Barton (Production Designer) and Aamina Gant (Music Coordinator) spoke to the RCA Cinderellas about what it is like to work on a television series, their professions and the life choices they made that led them to STAR. The Q&A was so informative and inspiring for the girls. “To see women working together, growing together and using their gifts and passions to create, build and maintain a hit show was amazing.” – Saving Our Daughters’ Co-Founder, Debbie Benjamin The girls had the pleasure of touring the entire set, meeting everyone from wardrobe, production design, construction and set decoration. They also got to watch the filming of a scene and learn about how food stylists prepare food for actors with allergies and restrictions. To end the trip with a bang, Queen Latifah came out to encourage the girls, take photos and gave hugs to each girl. “The Saving Our Daughters organization would like to thank Ms. Erica Young for such a life changing experience for our RCA Cinderellas and we are looking forward to catching the return of season 2 of STAR, on March 28 th .” – Saving Our Daughters Chief Executive Officer, Curtis Benjamin   What some of the RCA Cinderellas had to say on their STAR Visit;   Anita 7 th Grade I just really wanted to thank you guys for giving me this opportunity to experience a different perspective of show biz. I never knew how many teams that worked behind the scenes. There is literally a place where they make fake shrimp and fried chicken! I saw how people that worked in some of those departments had to be quick on their feet and how they worked with such a short period of time especially when something has to change after all the time that was spent on a certain part of the project. There were so many different working parts. There are more than 200 staff members that work daily. It just shows how everyone plays a part in the production. I also found it really cool how we got to see little behind the scene secrets like moving walls. It was so cool. I am just so grateful that I got the opportunity to visit. Thank you!   Iva 5 th Grade Thank you so much for the behind the scenes experience at the set of Star! Just from the sets to the costumes to meeting Queen Latifah was absolutely astonishing! I loved how everyone had their part in putting together the amazing production. I even got chills telling my mother about all the fun and interesting things that happened! Thank you so much!   Zoe 5 th Grade While we witnessed how and where Star is filmed, I learned so many new things. First off, I discovered so many jobs other than acting or directing. I will never watch T.V. in the same way because I know that there is so much work that goes into every part.   Joy 5 th Grade Thank you so much for inviting me to tour the set of Star. Not many people get to experience this at such a young age and the fact that I was chosen for such a special opportunity makes feel me incredibly thankful. It was so amazing to see the detail that is poured into the show. From a life-size picture of the street to homemade tofu beignets. It was absolutely mind blowing. When we saw the recreation of the Tabernacle, I thought it was awesome how they could see something and bring it to life. It looked so realistic! But the best part of all… I was able to meet Queen Latifah herself!

70 Black Youth Arrested In Georgia Shines Spotlight On Broken Criminal Justice System

T he Bartow County and Georgia NAACP branches launched a civil rights investigation on Wednesday into alleged police violations in the arrest of 70 people at a house party in Cartersville, Georgia. The teens and young adults now have arrest records on the charge of allegedly possessing less than 1 ounce of marijuana. SEE ALSO: DC Councilman Denounces Arrest Of Black Teens Selling Water “It is our hope the case will not drastically impact the lives of these young people and that justice will be done,” said attorney Gerald A. Griggs , chair of the Georgia NAACP Criminal Justice Committee. Police said they found less than an ounce of marijuana at a house party Saturday night & since no one claimed it, they arrested 70ppl for it. Some just got out today. Story at 5pm on Ch2 pic.twitter.com/OA2xQFdGX3 — Tyisha Fernandes (@TyishaWSB) January 2, 2018 The mass arrest began with Cartersville police officers responding to a 911 call about a possible gunshot around 2 a.m. on Sunday, WSBTV reported. Cops entered the home without a warrant after smelling marijuana in the front yard, a witness told the news outlet. When no one admitted to ownership of the small amount of the drug they discovered, the police arrested everyone. The police later found two stolen guns and other drugs after obtaining a warrant, the police department stated. The NAACP suspects that the police may have conducted an unlawful search of individuals and the property, which was rented for the party. All of those arrested could not have possessed the same small amount of marijuana, the organization stated. Considering the “changing cultural sentiment” about weed, a simple citation and release would have been more appropriate than arrests. “This is classic police harassment and intimidation,”  tweeted Kristen Clarke , president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Many of the partygoers complained about mistreatment from the police, including getting tied up with zip ties and threatened with tasers. Many of them also spent multiple days in jail. A GoFundMe campaign to help with bail and legal fees seeks to raise $15,000. They’ve been dubbed the “Cartersville 70,” which connects them to the long list of Black bodies unjustly arrested, such as the Central Park 5. The campaign noted that a majority of those arrest were college students, military members home for the holidays and hardworking people who could lose their job. Who Is Nikuyah Walker? Charlottesville Elects First Black Female Mayor

Original post:

A historic election in Charlottesville has ended with the victory of an African-American woman. The Virginia city named native  Nikuyah Walker as its new leader Tuesday night months after  white nationalist rallies plunged the area into deadly chaos, The Associated Press  reported. Charlottesville City Council members approved Walker’s appointment by a  4-1 vote. Walker, an outspoken critic of local leaders’ response to the “Unite the Right” rally who was sworn into office as a council member on December 29, has a positive outlook on the new position, largely a part-time job presiding over council meetings. The mom of three, who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Virginia Commonwealth University, is ready for the new role. “I never looked at it as, I’m above anyone else … there are just a few additional duties and whatever they are I will figure them out,” Walker, the first independent candidate elected to the council since 1948, said. She also took to Twitter after her win: “We made history last night and then we got to work. # MayorNikuyahWalker # Charlottesville.”  We made history last night and then we got to work. #MayorNikuyahWalker #Charlottesville pic.twitter.com/CJIpoPKFMz — Mayor Nikuyah Walker (@NikuyahWalkerCC) January 3, 2018 Walker, who replaced mayor Mike Signer  after calling for his resignation, was one of two new council members elected in November.  Heather Hill  was selected for vice mayor Tuesday night, according to NBC 29 . The newly elected mayor, who works for Charlottesville Parks and Recreation as well as is a social and racial justice advocate with nonprofit experience, wants to change how City Council meetings are run. Walker spoke about changing the amount of time people are allowed to speak and ensuring everyone is heard during those meetings. She was also candid about the job of mayor being a challenge. She learned a lot from running a campaign, she said, and vowed to keep going and put people first, C-Ville reported. Dozens of Black folks,  including prominent activists and public figures, are supporting  Walker all over social media. Nikuyah Walker becomes first Black woman mayor of #Charlottesville , VA.
