Nas Wants ‘Nasty’ To Bring ‘Realness’ Back To The Game

‘That’s why ‘Nasty’ is out there, it’s an M-80,’ Nas says of first single off upcoming album. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Gil Kaufman Nas Photo: C Flanigan/ Getty Images Few would argue that Nas lit a spark with “Nasty,” the first single off of his upcoming 10th solo album, but let the Queensbridge MC tell it and the old-school inspired hip-hop track actually packs a bigger boom. “You know ‘Nasty’ is what I would like the game to be right now in a lot of ways; back to the realness,” Nasir told MTV News before performing with Damian Marley at Austin City Limits last weekend. “That’s why ‘Nasty’ is out there, it’s an M-80. I lit an M-80.” The song’s video was shot in Nas’ native Queensbridge housing projects back in August, but its release has been delayed. Not to worry, says God’s Son, it is on its way soon. “Yeah, the ‘Nasty’ video is coming. I can’t wait ’til it hits, it’s perfect timing,” he said of the clip, which is directed by Decon. “It got pushed back ’cause — I mean, I guess I got busy, but we shot it, so it’s coming out for the people.” Though Esco wouldn’t give out any details surrounding his upcoming album, he did insist that it was coming out this year. Back in June, in an interview with DJ Envy on MTV2’s Sucker Free, the Illmatic One said that the album would be called Life Is Good, but later backtracked. “A lot of people around me didn’t understand where I was coming from. They kinda thought I was saying, ‘Let’s pop bottles, we’re rich, everything’s good.’ That’s not where I was coming from,” Nas cleared up in a June interview with MTV News. “So, there’s another title that came, that kind of fits a little better, and you might hear about that. There might be a change coming real soon.” Regardless of the name, Nas has a good feeling about “Nasty” and the trend that it will set in hip-hop. “So ‘Nasty’ is one of the songs to come and bring the sh– back to the real sh–,” he said. Nas Reveals He Considered Giving Up Solo Projects

MC tells MTV News he got deep into Distant Relatives collabo, ‘but it’s that time’ for a Nas album. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Nas Photo: MTV News He went from Nasty Nas to Nas Escobar, blossoming into a mature voice that could collaborate with the likes of dancehall star Damian Marley for a full-length album. But As Nas’ street-edged material has continued to leak online, the question is which Nas will show up on his next effort, due later this year: Nasty or an entirely new persona? Neither, according to the Queensbridge MC. “Sometimes, you can approach a record and can think, I got to take care of this person and I got to take care of that person, but you really got to take care of you,” Nas recently told MTV News. “I look at Michael Jackson, and before he passed away, I can only imagine the pressure he had to live up to for the next moonwalk,” he continued. “And the reality is physically, he wasn’t able to live up to that. I would have loved to see him come up with the next level, without even dancing, just using his creativity. It’s all about evolving and that’s what I want to do, evolve.” Nas spent last year touring in support of Distant Relatives, his joint project with Marley. The rapper said he was so comfortable working alongside Bob Marley’s offspring that he momentarily considered putting his solo career on the back burner. “I been so caught up into me and [Damian’s] thing that I started to get used to it,” Nas recalled. “Like, I didn’t want to do the solo thing for a while. Me and D have just been doing our thing, reaching millions of people, but it’s that time.” For his next album, Nas said he expects to bundle the material with the latest volume of his Lost Tapes series . He still isn’t sure, however, whether his current label will release the album. “It’s not safe to say that it’s gonna be on Def Jam,” he told MTV News. “You know, news at 11,” he laughed. “We coming with the information on that soon.” Are you looking to the next Nas album? According to TMZ , a Los Angeles superior court judge ordered Nas to immediately pay more than $47,249 in back child support and $40,454 in back spousal support. That hefty amount was in addition to an order to pay Kelis $10,000 a month in spousal support until Nas pays off the $299,015 he already owes Kelis in support payments. Nas, who is preparing to drop his collabo album with Damian Marley, Distant Relatives , on May 18, was also ordered to pay Kelis’ legal fees in the divorce case, which top $155,000, as well as more than $48,000 in Kelis’ accounting expenses. Ever since the couple split just months before the birth of their first child together, Knight Jones , last summer, they have been battling it out in court over support payments. In December, a Los Angeles superior court judge ordered the rapper (born Nasir Jones) to bump up his monthly child and spousal support payments from $40,000 to $51,000, for a total of more than $600,000 a year. Kelis released an EP called Acapella — The Remixes last week, and her album Flesh Tone is due out on July 6. Related Artists Nas Kelis
