Eminem Panics Crowd with Gunshot Sound Effects, Isn’t Sorry

Last year, viewers  slammed Eminem's performance . They called him a hack and a has been. Hey, everone's a critic, right? Now, however, he's being criticized for something much more serious — for setting off gunshot noises at his concert. The crowd visibly ducked in fear. And he's getting dragged for making thousands of people think that they were about to die in a hail of bullets. The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, most often known as Bonnaroo, isa  four-day music festival that takes place each summer in Manchester, Tennessee. If you live in Tennessee or any of the surrounding states, this is the festival that your friends who are willing to brave musicals attend each year. Unfortunately, some concert-goers received a serious fright. During his song, “Kill You,” pyrotechnics produced a chillingly realistic gunshot noise. So much so that, as you can see in the video that we included, the crowd was ducking in fear. The video quickly circulated on Twitter, inciting outrage. “Less than a year after Vegas and  @ Eminem  thinks it’s a good idea to blast gun shot sfx onstage at a music festival? Bad call on this headliner  @ bonnaroo . What happened to Radiate Positivity?” The  Las Vegas shooting  that claimed dozens of lives and wounded hundreds took place at the beginning of last October. Many of the victims had attended a Jason Aldean concert. For concert-goers to hear very realistic gunshot noises … it seems very natural for so many of them to instinctively fear for their lives. That doesn't sound like a good time. Eminem is no stranger to controversy. His team responded that these were not actual “gunshot” noises, but pyrotechnic concussion effects featuring a sonic boom. That seems like splitting hairs, but whatever. As always, his diehard fans were eager to jump to his defense. One person took to Twitter to refer to a previous performance of “Kill You.” “You can hear the same sound at the end you idiots. Watch some Eminem performance before going to one.” That's a little harsh. “So you grew up listening to Eminem but you didn’t expect gun shot sounds on his set.” Well, some would argue that it's a different experience when mass shootings are so common. “The gunshot actually makes the performance 10 times better.” We'll take that person's word for it. Some have argued that legislation should curtail this sort of element within a performance. There would be legal precedent. A famous First Amendment exception to free speech is using that speech to do harm, such as shouting “fire” in a crowded theater. Many would say that Eminem setting off such realistic sounding gunshots is the equivalent, and could provoke the crowd to trample each other in fear. After all, actual mass shootings occur multiple times per week, thanks to the widespread and virtually unchecked availability of tools designed for killing. Gunshots in music online or in other media (such as films) is different, as it comes with a visual context and is not usually consumed in massive, dense crowds of people who are standing shoulder-to-shoulder. Are gunshot effects in concerts a threat to concert-goers? Were Eminem's diehard defenders right to criticize fans for freaking out at the sounds of gunshots, since they were expected by many as part of the show? Or were concert-goers right to react instinctively — better safe than sorry — and were critics right to condemn the use of the sounds? Maybe the problem has nothing to do with the audience, the critics, or even Eminem. Maybe living every single day with the knowledge that we could die in a hail of bullets while going to a theater or using mass transit or attending school or a house of worship is the culprit. Perhaps fixing our nation's gun culture and gun epidemic will help to repair some of the other fractures and conflicts in our society. And people won't have any reason to fear attending a concert.

Ted Dwane, Mumford & Sons Bassist, Hospitalized for Blood Clot

Ted Dwane was rushed to the emergency room yesterday after suffering blood clot on his brain, with Mumford & Sons releasing a statement that updates fans on the condition of its bassist: “Our friend and bandmate Ted has been feeling unwell for a few days, and yesterday he was taken to a hospital to receive emergency treatment,” the band says, adding: “The scans revealed a blood clot on the surface of his brain that requires an operation. Ted is receiving excellent care and we are being assured that he will recover quickly from surgery.” As a result of this incident, Mumford & Sons – on tour in support of its second album – announced that it has postponed shows in Dallas, Woodlands and New Orleans. “We have no plans to cancel or postpone any other appearances along this current tour,” added the group. “We’re all wishing Ted a speedy recovery.” The quartet’s next concert is scheduled for June 15 at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN. Ludacris Reaches New ‘Heights’ With Ludaversal

‘This album Ludaversal, it’s all about progression,’ Ludacris tells MTV News By Rob Markman, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Ludacris Photo: Hard to imagine that Ludacris can get any bigger, but with more than a dozen years in the rap game, Luda is looking to take things to another level on his next album. “This album Ludaversal, it’s all about progression. We’re taking it to heights that you never, ever seen before,” the Atlanta MC told MTV News earlier this month at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee. It’s been two years since Luda dropped Battle of the Sexes, and the rapper/actor aims to catch his fans up on all of his goings-on. “I’ve had seven albums, so right now it’s about trying to go places that I haven’t been. I’ve traveled over the world for the past year and I brought a lot of experiences back with me and put ’em in the music,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of personal experiences, so you’re going to get to know the real me and things that have been going on over the past three or four years.” When it comes to MCing, you’d be hard-pressed to find a rapper more skilled than Luda. Still, as an artist, he has been able to grow and venture into the world of pop thanks to key collaborations with Justin Bieber , Enrique Iglesias and David Guetta . With Ludaversal, Cris said he will continue to grow and branch out musically while still keeping things deeply rooted in hip-hop. The album’s first single, “Jingalin,” is an LL Cool J-inspired dance record, but Luda will keep things interesting with records with Usher and David Guetta as well. While Ludaversal doesn’t have an official release date, Cris said he hopes to drop it on his birthday, September 11. What is your favorite Ludacris album? Let us know in the comments.

Mac Miller, Pharrell Making A ‘Political Statement’ On Pink Slime?

‘That sounds tight. What the f— is ‘pink slime’?,’ Miller said when Pharrell suggested the name for his EP. By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rya Backer Mac Miller Photo: MTV News During Mac Miller ‘s recent visit to “RapFix Live,” he dropped some hints about his upcoming EP Pink Slime. But now the cat’s out of the bag as it’s been revealed that Pharrell will co-pilot the project. MTV News caught up with Miller at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee, where he chatted about recording with Skateboard P and dreaming up the EP’s title. The Pittsburgh rapper released the first Pink Slime single, “Onaroll,” on June 5 and performed it for the first time at Bonnaroo just a few days later. Before hitting the stage, he opened up about the collaborative project, admitting that he was nervous to record with Pharrell at first. “Pharrell is a very creative person with everything he does,” Mac said, detailing one of their recording sessions. “We did this one record called ‘Dreams,’ and he was like, ‘I’ma rap on this.’ So he goes outside for 20 minutes and he just comes back, gets in the booth and raps. I don’t know what he did in those 20 minutes, but he just went out and came back in with no paper, no anything, and just had a verse ready.” As far as the name of the project, that was Pharrell’s brainchild as well. “It was his idea. I was at a loss for names,” Mac admits. “I was on tour and I was talking to him and he’s like, ‘I got the name — it’s Pink Slime. ‘ I was like, ‘That sounds tight. What the f— is “pink slime”?’ He’s like, ‘Pink slime is the fake meat they use at McDonald’s,’ and I was like, ‘Cool, man.’ ” From there, the Blue Slide Park rapper got a little bit silly about the deeper meaning in the title. “The meaning is that there is so much filth and ammonia in the world and we’re just speaking on how we need to clean up the environment,” he joked. “The message is … we pay for a Big Mac, maybe give me some good beef in there. It’s really a political statement we’re making.” There’s no confirmed release date for Pink Slime just yet. Related Artists Mac Miller Pharrell Williams

‘True Blood’ Premiere Leaves Fans Thirsty For Answers

Season five kicked off as sexy as ever, but we’ve still got some secrets we’d like to uncover. By Kara Warner Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgard and Lucy Griffiths in “True Blood” Photo: Lacey Terrell/ HBO Just when we were thinking that this summer needed a little more sizzle, HBO’s steamy vampire soap “True Blood” returned with all the nudity, over-the-top sex scenes and drama we’d been missing. Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t yet watched the season five premiere. For those who have, read on as we wrestle with a few new burning questions, along with some unanswered holdovers : How will Eric and Bill Be Punished? If there is anyone within the “True Blood” universe who takes corporal punishment seriously, it’s the Vampire Authority. As such, there is no way that Eric and Bill will escape their uptight, unforgiving clutches without a few flesh wounds. The King and his Sheriff really should face the True Death for their sins against the Authority, but we all know that there is no way HBO would kill off two of the most beloved characters — this isn’t “Game of Thrones.” So the question remains: How will Bill and Eric pay for their crimes? What Big Secret Is Terry Hiding From Arlene? We’ve known about Terry Bellefleur’s PTSD demons for several seasons now, but they haven’t posed a serious problem story-wise until this season. Clearly the arrival and continued presence of Terry’s war buddy Patrick (Scott Foley) is causing serious stress for several reasons, but why? What really happened that night in Iraq? And since this is “True Blood,” what sort of supernatural elements might be in play? When Will Alcide Find Out About Debbie? Those of us who’ve read Charlaine Harris’ books know that the Debbie Pelt murder plotline provided for plenty of drama between Sookie and Alcide, which makes us wonder just how long Alan Ball and company will draw out this particular plot point this season. Yes, Sookie killed someone, but because it was in self-defense, why do she and Lafayette have to be so secretive about it? Alcide knew that Debbie hated Sookie, surely he’ll understand? Regardless, we imagine Alcide will find out right before he and Sookie hookup or profess love to each other or something dramatic. What Happened to Jesus’ Body? Poor Lafayette. The man has been through some serious emotional strife. He finally allows himself to fall in love with a decent man for once, and that man turns out to be a brujo who in turn helps Lafayette uncover a few supernatural abilities of his own, which eventually leads to his death at the hands of Lafayette (who was possessed at the time). All Lafayette wanted to do was bury his dead lover’s body and say goodbye, but now his body is missing? What the heck happened to it? Who would take a dead man’s body and what will they do with it? We’ve already seen Jesus’ ghost once, will we be seeing him later this season fully reanimated in some way, shape or form? How Undead Is Tara? Tara’s not dead! More specifically Tara is now undead, a vampire. The last we saw of her she wanted to drain the life from her BFF Sookie, but we know that won’t happen. Odds are that Tara is not going to be pleased about being turned into a vampire, by Pam of all people, so how is she going to handle that? We don’t see her becoming BFFs with any of the vamps who terrified her before so this plotline could get really ugly really quickly. Maybe she could befriend Jessica? Tara is the most stubborn character on the show, so she’s going to have to be forced into seeking or receiving help, but from whom? What questions did you have after the “True Blood” premiere? WATCH: Fun.’s Bonnaroo Quiz Unearths Phishy Story

New York trio recall seeing jam-band legends at Madison Square Garden. By Rya Backer Photo: MTV News Bonnaroo 2012 came to a close Sunday night with a four-hour (and only four-hour, contrary to rumors circulating the campgrounds that they’d play until 6 a.m.) set by Phish , which featured such crowd favorites as “Sample in a Jar” and “Tweezer.” But before the masses filled the muddy field a final time, we caught up with Fun. for one last go at our trusty Bonnaroo quiz — now with new questions! The New York trio had no problem spelling the name of the festival — a talent that, given the response of the rest of the acts we talked to throughout the weekend, ought to be celebrated. Nor did they see much around the festival that they didn’t take to. Then we asked them to do their best Phish air guitar solo. Members Jack Antonoff and Nate Ruess deflected that question and instead offered a story of a time they saw Phish at New York’s Madison Square Garden several years ago instead. “We don’t smoke pot,” guitarist Antonoff started. “But the Garden, which is a large space, it got so hot-boxed. When we left, we were just like, ‘Ehhhhhhh’ ” — a fancy way of saying they were perhaps feeling the effects of the space’s second-hand smoke. “We stumbled into a bar, and we were like, ‘What should we dooooo?’ ” frontman Ruess added. They finally agreed upon “two things of nachos, three hamburgers.” So it wasn’t exactly the answer we expected, but envisioning some of our favorite rockers destroying some bar food worked just as well. And we can only wonder how they fared after Sunday evening’s performance … Did you experience Bonnaroo 2012? Share your favorite moments in the comments below! Bonnaroo 2012: 11 Moments You Missed (But We Didn’t!)

D’Angelo, Phish and the Beach Boys create unforgettable weekend. By Mary J. DiMeglio D’Angelo Photo: Gary Miller/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, Tennessee — The 11th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival rocked fans with Radiohead, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish and about 150 other artists — including indie rock, hip-hop, jazz, bluegrass, African, folk, reggae, electronic and metal — over the course of four sleepless days and nights, Thursday to Sunday. When Phish closed out the weekend Sunday night, wrapping up 15 minutes before their scheduled midnight end time — very uncharacteristic for Phish or for Bonnaroo — even diehard Phish heads, rain dripping down their faces, seemed relieved that they could finally turn off the adrenaline that kept them going for 96 hours. If you were there, you get it. If not, well, where the heck were you? If the festival’s many accolades — named as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “50 Moments That Changed Rock & Roll,” “Festival of the Decade” by Consequence of Sound and among the 10 Best Festivals by GQ — isn’t enough to get you to the farm, maybe these 11 moments will inspire some FOMO for next year: #10. Mac Miller Slimes Bonnaroo Mac Miller decided Bonnaroo was the perfect place for his first live performance of “On a Roll,” the initial track released from Pink Slime , his collaboration EP with Pharrell. #9. Flea Feels the Love During the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ scorching Saturday night set , bassist Flea clearly caught Bonnaroo fever, gushing, “I feel peace and love and kindness everywhere I walk around here.” He praised the weekend’s earlier performances from St. Vincent, Dumpstaphunk, Santigold and the Roots, calling Radiohead’s Friday night set “so f—ing beautiful.” As if his bass playing isn’t impressive enough, he deftly made his way across the stage in a handstand. #8. Alice Cooper Shocks With — Gasp! — Pop! Fittingly, the most-stunning moment of the weekend came from legendary shock rocker Alice Cooper. A crowd of confused metalheads weren’t sure how to react when Cooper ended his set with an homage to Lady Gaga, owning her freak anthem “Born This Way.” #7. Wandering While any Bonnaroovian will tell you that figuring out ways to better your festival is an ongoing project, as experience informs improvements year after year, it only takes a weekend or two to learn the three basics of Bonnaroo: water, sunscreen and if you’re not totally digging where you are, change locations. There are infinite options for fun. Keep walking till you find yours. #6. Radiohead Tease Thom Yorke created quite the buzz during Radiohead’s Friday night set with a cryptic dedication. Before their new track “Supercollider,” Yorke declared, “This song is for Jack White. We saw him yesterday. A big thank you to him, but we can’t tell you why. You’ll find out.” Sounds like a collaboration, no? #5. Kenny Rogers Goes ‘All Night Long’ Kenny Rogers might have had the biggest Sunday of any of the nearly 80,000 music fans that packed the farm. After being presented the key to Manchester, Rogers was joined onstage by Lionel Richie for “Lady.” Richie then took center stage for “All Night Long.” Sunday night, Rogers later took his turn guesting, joining Phish onstage for his day’s second performance of “The Gambler.” #4. D’Angelo Emerges There could have been no better way for D’Angelo to emerge from hibernation than joining Questlove for an early morning Bonnaroo “Superjam.” Backed by a nine-piece band for his first U.S. performance in over a decade, D’Angelo was onstage for over an hour, lending his neo-soul flavor to Jimi Hendrix’s “Have You Ever Been (to Electric Ladyland),” the Beatles’ “She Came In Through the Bathroom Window” and Led Zeppelin’s “What Is and What Should Never Be.” #3. Beach Boys Bring ‘Good Vibrations’ No matter what mood soggy campers woke up in, the cloudy skies Sunday afternoon couldn’t dampen the pure joy of the Beach Boys’ sun-drenched classics. “Kokomo” had the rain-weary dreaming of bringing their loves to Aruba or Jamaica to get away from it all. #2. Phish Makes it Rain Long credited by the festival’s organizers as providing the blueprint for the event with their homegrown parties in the Northeast, Phish is the undisputed ultimate Bonnaroo headliner. While, yes, they are wasteful plastic garbage, the shower of glowsticks during a Phish set just looks so darn purdy. Early in the second set, the neon rain during the “Can’t I live while I’m young?” refrain in “Chalk Dust Torture” signaled the crowd was ready for round two. #1. The Mud It happens every year, and the sooner you stop trying to stay clean, the happier you’ll be. Just like on Burning Man’s playa, inclement weather on the farm — coupled with lack of sleep — strips people down to their core. Any last bit of ego you were hanging onto was washed away hours ago. Bring pants that can be rolled up. Otherwise: Embrace the mud. Did you experience Bonnaroo 2012? Share your favorite moments in the comments below!
